Development

Director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt began negotiations with Capcom to adapt the Monster Hunter series in 2009, one year after Anderson began playing the games.[2] Anderson publicized their plans in 2012, while doing press for another Capcom adaptation, Resident Evil: Retribution.[3] On September 15, 2016, during the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto announced that a live-action Hollywood adaption of Monster Hunter was in development, but provided no further details. Anderson and Bolt confirmed their involvement to Deadline that November, with Anderson describing the setting of the games as "a fresh, exciting world that we could expose and build a whole world around, like a Marvel or Star Wars universe."[4] By then, he had written the first iteration of the script, with the following logline:

For every Monster, there is a Hero. An ordinary man in a dead end job discovers that he is actually the descendant of an ancient hero. He must travel to a mystical world to train to become a Monster Hunter, before the mythical creatures from that world destroy ours.[4]

A piece of concept art published with the article showed a Rathalos, the series' signature monster, attacking the Los Angeles International Airport. In another version of the script, the protagonist was a "bullied, quite clumsy" 16-year-old boy chosen as the latest hero chosen to protect Earth from the Monster Hunter world's creatures, who inspired countless legends during previous invasions.[2] By the time Anderson's schedule allowed him to make the film, however, young adult fantasy had fallen out of fashion. In 2017, visual effects company Mr. X uploaded an effects reel which featured brief footage based on this version of the script, showing a Rathalos and Gore Magala battling inside a mall. Anderson cited Avatar, the Indiana Jones films, and a 2010 collaboration between Monster Hunter and Metal Gear Solid as influences on the final draft.[2][5] Of the collaboration, he said, "[W]hat fun to kind of play with the hubris of the modern world in that we put our faith in technology so much — in fact, too much in my opinion."[5]

On May 21, 2017, Variety.com reports German film production and distribution company Constantin Film announced they are producing the film and aimed for production in late 2017 to 2018. On May 11, 2018. Variety announced Milla Jovovich was set to star as the film's lead. On September 25, 2018, Clifford "T.I." Harris and Ron Perlman were announced to costar alongside Tony Jaa, who was announced as "the Hunter". Along with Perlman’s Admiral character, Tony Jaa's hunter is based on characters that appear in the 2018 videogame Monster Hunter: World. Harris is set to portray Link, a sniper in Jovovich's then-unnamed character's military team. On October 01, 2018, Actor Diego Boneta was announced to join the cast as well, playing another character in the military. His character was later identified as Sergeant Marshall, a communications specialist.

On October 4, 2018, The Hollywood reporter reports alongside Constantin Film, Toho will co-finance the video game adaptation and distribute it in Japan. Anderson, in a interview with Slashfilm, would later confirm that another character from Monster Hunter: World, The Handler, is set to appear and that the monsters set to appear in the film all originate from the games, with none of them being original creations.

On November 20, 2018, IGN released a first look featuring stills of Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa running through a desert while wielding a Great Sword and Hunter's Bow. Jovovich can be seen armed with a slinger, a device first introduced in Monster Hunter: World. During the Shanghai International Film Festival, a teaser was shown alongside an announcement that Toho and Tencent would distribute the film in Asian territories. The footage was leaked on June 17, 2019 through the Monster Hunter Asia Facebook Fan page, showing glimpses of Diablos and Rathalos. On October 3, 2020, IGN and Sony Pictures' respective YouTube channels uploaded a 16-second teaser featuring Black Diablos. Later on October 8, the official Twitter account for PlayStation would tweet another teaser featuring more footage of the Black Diablos as well as Tony Jaa’s character firing at it with a bow.

On October 10, 2020, New York Comic-Con Online hosted a panel with director Paul W.S. Anderson and Interviewer Matt Patches, featuring the first look at the movie's Rathalos. Anderson elaborated that the Rathalos featured is, in fact, a Greater Rathalos which a much larger individual than those seen within the games. Further info hints that its large size is the result of its association with an ancient civilization that is an established part of Monster Hunter lore. Later the same day, Sony Pictures' YouTube account would upload a vignette featuring Anderson sitting down and speaking to Ryozo Tsujimoto and Kaname Fujioka, the respective Producer and Director of the Monster Hunter videogame franchise, as well as the reveal of the herbivorous monster Apceros's presence within the film. On October 14, 2020, the first full length trailer is released alongside an alternate international trailer with the former revealing the appearance of Nerscylla and Gore Magala.

On November 19, 2020, the official IGN YouTube channel released a Chinese trailer featuring the first glimpse of the film's Meowscular Chef. On November 24, 2020, the official Monster Hunter YouTube channel uploaded a promotional collaboration announcement for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Two singleplayer event quests, “The New World” and “To Our World”, were revealed. The player plays as Artemis, with voice lines provided by Jovovich herself. A special layered set of armor is the reward for hunting a Black Diablos and an enlarged Rathalos, both references to Artemis' opponents in the film.

On November 30, 2020, the Monster Hunter movie's Twitter would tweet a 16-second video featuring multiple monsters. Cephalos, a small shark-like monster that swims through sand, was revealed to be in the film. And on December 3, 2020, the page would release official size measurements for Nerscylla, Apceros, Diablos and Rathalos, respectively.
