Mecha-Ghidorah

Mecha-Ghidorah (メカギドラ Mekagidora) is a mechanical version of King Ghidorah conceived by anime mechanical designer Kunio Okawara. Illustrations of the mech by Masami Watanabe and Yuji Kaida were published in an article in the March 1983 issue of TV Magazine entitled "Super Space Monster Robot! Mecha-Ghidorah vs. the King of the Monsters Godzilla," along with his backstory, anatomy and abilities.[1] The article was later republished in 2018 in volume 41 of the Godzilla All Movie DVD Collector's Box.[a] Mecha-Ghidorah predated Mecha-King Ghidorah by nearly a decade.
Name
Mecha-Ghidorah's name is a combination of the suffix mecha (メカ meka), a shortening of "mechanical" (メカニカル mekanikaru) also used in the name of Mechagodzilla, and Gidora from "King Ghidorah."
In a spotlight of a plastic model of Mecha-Ghidorah made by Toshikazu Shishizawa which was published in SF Plamo Magazine, he was instead called Mecha-King Ghidorah (メカキングギドラ).
Design
Mecha-Ghidorah maintains the same silhouette as its organic counterpart, being a bipedal dragon with wings for forelimbs, three heads, and twin tails. However, its body is considerably more angular and is plated with a golden metal. Each of Mecha-Ghidorah's heads are adorned with horns resembling antennae, and its necks lack Ghidorah's manes. In place of eyes, each head has a single, differently-colored spherical visor which doubles as a laser firing apparatus. The mech also appears to have a hatch in his pelvis, which houses his primary energy source.
Origins
Mecha-Ghidorah was developed in the Dark Nebula (暗黒星雲 Ankoku Seiun) by the Dark Mysterious Star Alliance (暗黒怪星連合 Ankoku Kaisei Rengō), consisting of representatives of the People of the Third Planet of Yomi, Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, M Space Hunter Nebula Aliens, Kilaaks, Xiliens, Natarls and Mysterians.[1] Conceived as the ultimate weapon against Godzilla, it was patterned after the monster's archnemesis King Ghidorah and incorporates technology from many of the aliens' previous creations, such as that of Mechagodzilla, Gigan, Moguera and the Daimakan.[1]
Abilities
Flight
Both of Mecha-Ghidorah's wings contain many rows of antigravity plates (反重力プレート hanjūryoku purēto), presumably enabling flight.[1]
Beam-firing eyes
Mecha-Ghidorah's three heads are outfitted with beam-firing eyes (ビームはっしゃアイ bīmu hassha ai), each of which emits a different laser beam.[1] His central eye, which appears to be colored white, fires a Freeze Ray (れいとう光線 Reitō Kōsen). Inversely, his left eye, colored red, fires a Heat Ray (熱光線 Netsu Kōsen). Finally, the eye of his right head, colored green, fires King Ghidorah's Gravity Beams (引力光線 Inryoku Kōsen).[1] These beams were designed with reference to those of Mechagodzilla and the Daimakan.[1]
Rotating Cutter
Mecha-Ghidorah has a Rotating Cutter (回転カッター Kaiten Kattā) identical to that of Gigan mounted on his back to slice opponents.[1]
Tail drills
Mecha-Ghidorah's two tails double as drills (ドリル doriru). These are patterned after the Mysterian burrowing robot Moguera's drill nose.[1]
Antennae
Mecha-Ghidorah is equipped with six high-precision antennae (高性能アンテナ kōseinō antena), two on each head.[1]

Trivia
- While they are not mentioned as part of the lineup of the Dark Mysterious Star Alliance, an illustration of Mecha-Ghidorah in his hangar appears to show the top of the head of a Garoga from Zone Fighter. A woman is also present with a hairstyle similar to that of Namikawa.
