— Wade Watts (Ready Player One) |
King Kong is a giant ape that first appeared in the 2018 film, Ready Player One, although he has no role in the 2011 novel of the same name. Unlike most incarnations of the character, he is not an actual creature, but is rather an artificial intelligence inside the virtual world OASIS.
Development
King Kong was modeled after the 1933 film version by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). “All of the hairs on his body are hand-groomed, hand-placed,” the visual effects supervisor Grady Cofer said about his artists’ work on the creature. “In a way, it’s similar to the way the original puppet was made.”[1]
Origins
James Halliday, the creator of a popular virtual reality game called the OASIS, devised a series of challenges called Anorak's Quest to determine his successor after his death. In the first challenge, players need to race through the streets of a simulated New York City, evading various obstacles, King Kong being the last and hardest one. It is possible that Halliday programmed Kong to be impassible.
History
King Kong was the final hazard of the race, leaping off the Empire State Building to attack the racers. Just before the finish line, Kong crashed through the racetrack itself and lurk out of sight to swatting any player who tried to drive over him. The solution that Wade Watts discovered was to drive in reverse at the start of the race, revealing a hidden corridor that ran underneath the racetrack.
Abilities
Physical strength
Kong is extremely strong, he can destroy the vehicles with very ease.
Agility
In addition to possessing formidable strength, Kong is surprisingly agile for a creature of his size. He is able to scale the buildings with ease.
Weaknesses
He is unable to attack the player under the map.
