The Tagruato Corporation, or simply Tagruato (タグラート,   Tagurāto) is a fictional Japanese deep sea mining company that first appeared in the 2008 film Cloverfield, the company is owned by Ganu Yoshida and are irresponsible for their actions. The company awakened Clover while mining for Seabed Nectar to fuel their main product called "Slusho!".

History

Established in 1989, the company's main function was as a deep-sea drilling with different stations around the world, with the most recent being the Chuai station near New York. Before Tagruato, the company was previously called the "Hand Of Power", before being bought out by Ganu Yoshida. Their drilling stations were very advanced and able to resist extreme pressure of 7,000 meters and 9,500 meters of seabed. Tagruato was the cause of environmental damage via their drilling stations which included noise pollution and the extinction of fauna as stated by T.I.D.O. Wave, an activist group aiming to take down Tagruato. The protestors also said the corporation gets what it wants no matter what, shown when it tried to buy a mining company and the former owner winded up dead. T.I.D.O. Wave also accused Tagruato of owning a company in India that uses child labor and dumping industrial waste into Tokyo Bay. More information was revealed by an informant known as "Whistle Blower", that being two images of sonar detecting what might be early images of the monster moving and as a coincidence the Chuai station disappears.

In the film, Clover attacked New York City during the going-away party of Robert Hawkins, who Slusho! had just hired as its Vice President of Marketing and Promotions.[1] His brother Jason wore a Slusho! shirt to the party. While attempting to cross the Brooklyn Bridge early in the monster's rampage, his friend Hudson Platt filmed a Tagruato VLCC tanker in flames.

Emails from a disabled account were being sent by two Tagurato employees Vannesa Gown and Feing Guangabiao in 2016. Howard Stambler, who had been loyal to the company for 7 years, is given employee of the month status by email for diagnosing transmission issues with two orbiting satellites for governmental clients. According to the Tagruato website, an EOM, Bold Futura liaison officer Nikolai Roza, was working on a "special project" on Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

In 2018, an error message appeared on the Tagruato website and when it was deciphered it contained the "Olso" memo that talks about an "Energy Revolution" and mentions the companies "Oslo One" and "Norway Renewable". Then another memo appears talking about "The Cloverfield Energy Initiative" and it appears as if T.I.D.O Wave is trying to stop this. Another message has been deciphered and Tagruato claims to have begun development on a "revolutionary new energy technology" probably working on an early Shepard.

Tagruato is a company that had discovered a pod-like object deep in the ocean 15 years ago and transported it to Japan and which the "Repose of the Earth" cult had referred to as a "Remnant of God". The pod sent electromagnetic waves to Clover which was now known to be the monster currently attacking Japan and destroyed several of the company's ships.

Trivia

  • Despite its prominence in the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign, Slusho! was not originally created for the movie. It first appeared in an unidentified episode of the TV series Kenan and Kel, which ran from 1996 to 2000, where it was spelled "Slush-O".[2] It next appeared in a 2001 episode of Alias, created by Cloverfield producer J.J. Abrams, and two 2007 episodes of Heroes, which aired after the start of the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign. Since the film's release, it has become a recurring Easter egg in Abrams's works, with sightings in Fringe, Star Trek, Super 8, and 11.22.63.
  • Star Trek also features a Tagruato building positioned near the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Tagruato CEO Ganu Yoshida appears in the 2018 Cloverfield fan film Megan, which sought to link the original film with 10 Cloverfield Lane. He is played by Garret T. Sato.
