Warbats (ワーバット,   Wābatto) are winged snake-like monsters who appear in Legendary Pictures' 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong.

Massive predators of the Hollow Earth, two Warbats menaced Kong and the Monarch-Apex Cybernetics expedition shortly after their arrival. After destroying a HEAV, the first Warbat was swiftly dispatched by Kong, but the other one coiled around him and nearly suffocated him with its wings. Fortunately, another HEAV forced the beast to release its grip with a volley of missiles, allowing Kong to kill it as well.

Name

The Warbats were given the name Nozuki during their conception. The name was first revealed to the public on early leaked packaging for the 6" Playmates figure.[1] Walmart receipts for the figure also used the Nozuki name.[2] Designer Matt Millard nicknamed one of his concepts for Warbat "Baraka,"[3] after the Mortal Kombat character of the same name.[5]

According to the Japanese theater program for Godzilla vs. Kong, the Warbats are classified as Vellum Vespertilio (ベラム・ヴェスペルティリオ,   Beramu Vesuperutirio).[4] "Vellum" is a kind of parchment made from animal skin, typically that of a calf; it is borrowed from the Old French vélin, meaning "calfskin," itself taken from the Latin vitulinum ("made from calf"). Vespertilio is the Latin word for "bat" and is also the name of a genus of bat. Warbat's name is transliterated into Japanese as either ワーバット (Wābatto) or ウォーバット (Uōbatto).

Design

Warbats are large serpentine creatures, grayish green in coloration and equipped with two red membranous wings running down the top half of their bodies, supported by long spines which are extensions of their ribcages. Between their long, slender bodies and membranous wings, they resemble cobras. The bottom half of their torso also has ventral scales.

Their heads are also snake-like, with two enormous fangs protruding from their bottom jaws as well as rows of needle-like teeth jutting out from their mouths. Their eyes are green, with the pupils being horizontal and almost cat-like. They posses bony ridges above their eye, resembling that of a crocodilian. Warbat blood is light green.

Behavior

Monarch classifies the Warbats' behavior as that of a "destroyer,"[4] along with such creatures as King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mechagodzilla.

Godzilla vs. Kong

A Warbat constricting around Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong

No sooner had Kong and the Monarch-Apex Cybernetics expedition begun to explore the Hollow Earth than they were ambushed by a pair of Warbats. The first sank its teeth into a HEAV, destroying it instantly. It circled around for another strike, but just before it could bite the HEAV carrying Dr. Nathan Lind, Dr. Ilene Andrews, and Jia, Kong grabbed it by the tail and slammed its head into a sharp rock, killing it. He swung its corpse around to bludgeon the second Warbat. The serpent quickly recovered and constricted him, covering his face with its hood. Lind ordered his HEAV to launch a missile barrage at the Warbat. In its agony it loosened its grip on Kong, and the ape made it pay, slamming it repeatedly into the ground and pounding it to death with his fists. Ripping off its head, he spent a few moments slurping its innards as the humans watched in disgust.

Abilities

Physical capabilities

Kong is incapacitated by a Warbat

Warbats can use their membranous wing-like hoods to both fly and glide through the air. They are agile fliers and display excellent maneuverability. The average Warbat can move through the air at a maximum speed of 72 mph, or about 115 kph, and glide at 46 mph, or about 74 kph.[4]

They are also quick in combat, able to coil the entire length of their bodies around prey in seconds in an attack called the Bone Crusher (ボーンクラッシャー).[4] Using their wings, they can utilize the fingers as limbs in order to quickly crawl about, as seen when one swiftly repositioned itself using its fingers to face Kong after he knocked it to the ground. During its fight with Kong, the second Warbat managed to latch onto and wrap around him with its snake-like body, then attempted to suffocate him with its wings in an attack called the Razorwing Deathmask (レザーウィングデスマスク).[4]

The Warbats have an average bite force of 5,900 pounds per square inch, and can strike at an opponent at speeds of 121 miles per hour.[4] The first Warbat was able to destroy a HEAV using its 14-foot long fangs.

Durability

Kong killed the first Warbat by slamming its head into a sharp rock. The second Warbat loosened its coils when it was hit by a HEAV's missiles, allowing Kong to break free and quickly dispatch it by repeatedly slamming it into the ground and bashing it with his fists.

Venom

According to the Japanese theater program for Godzilla vs. Kong, Warbats are highly venomous and can inject some 9,800 gallons of venom (or 37,000 liters) into their prey in a single bite in an attack called the Venomous Fang Strike (毒歯ストライク).[4] The description on the back of the packaging for Playmates' 6" Warbat figure also describes the creatures as having venomous wings.[7]

In the mobile game Go Big!, the Warbat can shoot venomous balls that can daze the player.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted

When RM Construction head Raymond Martin went on a rampage through the Hollow Earth in his Titan Hunter mech, a sleeping Warbat was his first target. The Titan Hunter grabbed the creature by the tail, swung it in the air as it struggled, and killed it by slamming it neck-first into a rock.

Roar

The Warbats have a deep, raspy roar identical to Insectosaurus from Monsters vs. Aliens. Some of their high-pitched screeches sound similar to the screams of the Nazgûl, or Ring-Wraiths, in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films. During their fight against Kong, the Warbats briefly made a sound identical to the Xenomorphs in the Alien franchise.

Trivia

  • "Warbat" is also the name of an Arabic pastry.
  • A piece of concept art by Matt Millard shows Nozuki, a scrapped male counterpart to Warbat that would've had an electric tail and prehensile wings.
  • Kong's killing of the second Warbat was an homage to the sleeping bag scene in Jason X.[9]
  • Warbat's serpentine anatomy and tactic of constricting its body around Kong echoes Kong's many other serpent-like foes, dating back to the Elasmosaurus from the original film.
  • Coincidentally, Warbat resembles the Flying Snakes from Godzilla Defense Force.
