Wikizilla has a limited scope of productions which it covers. The following page outlines what media is appropriate for site inclusion, divided by medium and category.

Overview

Categories

Wikizilla's rules for films and series are divided into nine distinct categories: live-action films financed by Toho, live-action series financed by Toho, live-action films financed by Daiei, live-action Japanese films financed by companies other than Toho or Daiei, non-Japanese live action films, documentaries, animated movies, fan films, and miscellaneous television series. In the case that a film or series is a joint venture between Toho or Daiei and another Japanese company, it may be considered for both the Toho/Daiei rules and the Japanese film/miscellaneous TV rules. Similarly, works which are partnerships between a Japanese and non-Japanese company can be considered for both the Japanese and non-Japanese rules.

The following rulesets do not account for films and TV shows starring the characters of Godzilla, Gamera, and/or King Kong, as they are the three main pillars of the site and any such productions are covered automatically. Films in which these or related characters have minor or supporting roles (e.g. Godzilla in Always: Sunset on Third Street 2, Gamera in Cosplay Warrior Cutie Knight, King Kong in The LEGO Batman Movie) are excluded, but those versions of the characters may receive incarnation pages.

Most rulesets are laid out in numbered lists; a film or series must satisfy at least one of the numbered rules in its respective category. Some rulesets also include a list of exclusions under which a work can be rejected even if it satisfies one of the inclusion criteria.

Listed below each of the rulesets are the productions which have been approved for site inclusion, each of which is marked with a number correlating to the rule(s) which it is qualified by.

Approved pages

All major monsters, characters, weapons, and vehicles from an approved film or series may receive pages. The exception to this is fan films, original characters from which should not receive pages unless they appear in other works (e.g. Gfantis).

Disambiguation of terms

For simplicity's sake, these rules use terms such as "Toho-funded" or "Daiei-funded"; however, these do not refer strictly to Toho Co., Ltd. and Daiei Co., Ltd. For Daiei, both the original Daiei which went bankrupt in 1971 and its successor, established in 1974 as Daiei Film Co., Ltd., are included under the same umbrella. However, this does not extend to Kadokawa, which bought Daiei Film in 2002 and has only funded one feature-length Gamera film since. Any film produced by Kadokawa and not Daiei will therefore fall under the rules for general Japanese films. Furthermore, works financed by subsidiaries of Toho or Daiei (such as Toho Eizo) may be considered with those by their parent companies, so long as the company was a subsidiary at the time of the work's production. Works financed by a company that was acquired by Toho or Daiei after the fact do not count retroactively, but still have a chance to qualify for inclusion as a miscellaneous film or series.

"Funded" is used here as an analogue of the Japanese 製作 (seisaku; "produce[d]") which refers to studio financing, as opposed to the homophonous 制作 (also "produce[d]") which refers to on-set work such as shooting. Some of Toho's movies were not "produced" by them per se, but rather financed by them. Because of situations like this, we place a larger importance on financing than on shooting. Therefore, a work which is produced by Toho, but not financed by them, would not be considered under a Toho ruleset.

Though Wikizilla frequently lists giant robots and kyodai heroes as monsters under our pages' Appearances sections, neither count as "giant monsters" in the context of these rules. Also, since many giant monsters lack official measurements, we do not have strict minimum size requirements for them. The monster should simply be large enough to dominate its surroundings; consequently, films including monsters who only stand several meters tall are more likely to qualify if the monsters terrorize settings like pre-industrial Japan.

Films

Live-action

Toho

Live-action, Toho-funded films outside of the Godzilla series must either:

  1. Include a giant monster in a substantial role (cases such as mountain-sized Torterra appearing briefly in Pokémon Detective Pikachu do not count).
  2. Include characters (e.g. Rodan and Mothra) or superweapons (e.g. the Gotengo and Maser Cannons) who previously or subsequently appeared in Godzilla media.
  3. Be science fiction and/or horror and share a director, writer, director of special effects, or equivalent position with at least two feature-length Godzilla films.
  4. Be science fiction and/or horror and be directly related to another qualified Toho film or TV series (e.g. the Cyber Cop film being based on the Cyber Cop TV series).

Films which have been approved under these conditions include:

Daiei

Live-action, Daiei-funded films outside of the Gamera series must either:

  1. Include a monster which makes significant use of practical effects (i.e. puppeteering or full-body suitmation) and be worked on by a director of special effects and/or special effects photographer.
  2. Be science fiction and share a director of special effects/special effects photographer or equivalent role with at least one feature-length Godzilla or Gamera film.
  3. Be directly related to another qualified Daiei film (e.g. The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly being a spiritual successor to The Invisible Man Appears).

Other Japanese

Live-action Japanese films funded by a company other than Toho or Daiei must either:

  1. Focus on one or more giant monsters, or a character who ultimately becomes a giant monster.
  2. Include a giant monster and share a director of special effects or equivalent role with at least one feature-length Godzilla or Gamera film.
  3. Demonstrate significant influence from the Godzilla, King Kong, and/or Gamera series.
  4. Be a remake, direct sequel/prequel, spiritual successor, or parody to a qualified film or series.

The following types of films will be automatically excluded:

  1. Ultra Series, Super Sentai, and Kamen Rider films, as well as films which focus on parodying these franchises, unless they are funded by Toho.
  2. Other Tsuburaya Productions films, unless they are feature-length and financed or distributed by Toho.
  3. Student films, unless they are completed by the director after graduation.
  4. Pornography.

Films which have been approved under these conditions include:

Miscellaneous

Non-Japanese, live-action films must either:

  1. Include a giant monster and demonstrate significant influence from or on the Godzilla, King Kong, and/or Gamera series, beyond the mere presence of a giant monster.
  2. Include a giant monster and share a director, special effects director, screenwriter, or suitmaker with the Godzilla or Gamera series.
  3. Include at least one stop-motion giant monster animated by Willis O'Brien, chief animator for the original King Kong.
  4. Be a remake of, or sequel/prequel to, another qualified film.

The following types of films will be automatically excluded:

  1. Mockbusters of qualified films, unless they make significant use of practical effects. This does not necessarily exclude spoofs or parodies.
  2. Films with extremely low production value (e.g. Ganjasaurus Rex and The Mighty Gorga).
  3. Films which could be sufficiently covered by another available wiki.
  4. Pornography.

Films which have been approved under these conditions include:

Animated

Animated films must either:

  1. Be directly related to live-action films we cover. This does not include works which are simply adaptations of the same source material.
  2. Use 3DCG to closely recreate the look of tokusatsu effects. Exclude films by Tsuburaya Productions.

Films which have been qualified under these conditions include:

Fan films

Fan films which are based on or significantly reference approved films or TV shows must either:

  1. Have been participated in by an actor or staff member who worked on films or series covered by the site. The use of stock music by a composer does not count.
  2. Have been acknowledged by the studio which owns the source material (e.g. distributing the film or threatening legal action against the filmmakers).

Films which have been qualified under these conditions include:

Television/web/direct-to-video series

Live-action

Toho

Live-action, Toho-funded series outside of the Godzilla series must either:

  1. Feature a giant monster in a substantial role.
  2. Make use of tokusatsu techniques.
  3. Be directly related to a qualified Toho film or series.

Series which have been approved under these conditions include:

Miscellaneous

Animated shows funded by Toho, any series funded by a studio other than Toho, or a relevant episode of one of said series, must either:

  1. Be directly related to live-action films or shows we cover beyond simply referencing them.
  2. Feature a giant monster in a prominent role and share a Japanese director, special effects director, or screenwriter with a feature-length Godzilla or Gamera film for at least half of its episodes.
  3. Feature a giant monster in a prominent role and have a Japanese executive producer or executive director who also served as the director, special effects director, or screenwriter of a Godzilla or Gamera film.

Shows that are funded by Tsuburaya Productions, or that are entries in or parodies of the Kamen Rider or Super Sentai franchises, are automatically excluded unless they are co-financed by Toho.

Series which have been approved under these conditions include:

Documentaries

Documentaries covered by Wikizilla should focus primarily on the narrative films covered by the site. This may include individual episodes of a TV series. They may be excluded on the basis of low production value.
