Deadline broke the news of Pacific Rim on November 7, 2018, reporting that the series would be co-produced by Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson and feature "two siblings — an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister — who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents." A listing for the series was posted to Netflix sometime later, along with an accompanying synopsis.
During the 2019 Los Angeles Project Anime event, Legendary Entertainment's executive vice president of brand development and consumer products, Elie Dekel, revealed that the series would be released in 2020 and was confirmed for at least two seasons. He also confirmed that the series would be produced in partnership with the Japanese animation studio Polygon Pictures, who had previously worked on the GODZILLA anime films.
