Years after Bombay, they made landfall, and nothing could have prepared us for the level of destruction they let loose. Within a year, half the globe was in cinders, while the other half could do nothing but wait its turn. Gigan and King Ghidorah, we called them. They've pushed us to the breaking point, but with a little help, today we'll push back.

— Narration by Ota Murakami (Godzilla: The Half-Century War issue 5)

King Ghidorah is a three-headed dragon kaiju who appeared in issues 4 and 5 of Godzilla: The Half-Century War.

An evil extraterrestrial dragon originating from an unknown planet outside of the solar system, King Ghidorah came to Earth along with his cyborg ally Gigan in order to destroy it. After reducing half of the world to ashes, the pair battled a final battle in Antarctica against Godzilla and the New Mechagodzilla.

Name

Main article: King Ghidorah#Name.

The "Ghidorah" (ギドラ Gidora) part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒドラ Hidora), which shares two of its three katakana characters with "Ghidorah." It also, coincidentally or not, sounds very similar to the Russian pronunciation of "hydra" (Гидра, ˈɡʲidrə).

Design

The design for this incarnation of King Ghidorah mostly resembles the design of the Heisei incarnation, though there are a few differences. His eyes have red pupils, his wings are more fin-shaped and his tongues are not forked.

Personality

In a similar manner to the Showa King Ghidorah, this incarnation is a pure evil monster who seeks to bring ruin to Earth. Despite this, he is shown to be an ally of Gigan, with the pair destroying cities and fighting Earth’s protectors together.

Origins

King Ghidorah originated from an unknown planet outside of the solar system and was attracted to Earth due to the effects of the Psionic Transmitter. He landed on Earth sometime between 1987 and 2002, causing massive destruction in many parts of the world along with Gigan and facing resistance from humanity and the Earthborne monsters, particularly Godzilla.

History

Godzilla: The Half-Century War

"Bombay, 1987"

King Ghidorah and Gigan are briefly seen in silhouette travelling to Earth after the more powerful version of the Psionic Transmitter is activated by Dr. Deverich in 1987.

"2002: The End of the World"

In 2002, half of the world was in flaming ruins after King Ghidorah and Gigan came to Earth several years after SpaceGodzilla's demise. The A.M.F. regrouped to Antarctica, where they prepared a final stand against the space kaiju. After luring them to the southern continent with Psionic Transmitters, the A.M.F. prepared a rebuilt Mechagodzilla and their ultimate weapon; the Dimension Tide. King Ghidorah and Gigan destroyed a fleet of ships off the Antarctic coast, but were confronted by Godzilla. While Godzilla's attention was locked on Gigan, King Ghidorah bit Godzilla from behind with his three heads and lifted him into the air. Gigan soared in to attack the restrained Godzilla, but was shot down by Mechagodzilla, piloted by Ota Murakami. Mechagodzilla rammed into King Ghidorah, forcing him to drop Godzilla, and dashed around to attack Ghidorah's back. King Ghidorah countered by bombarding Mechagodzilla with his gravity beams, and Gigan swooped by, cutting the machine. Godzilla recovered and grabbed one of Ghidorah's heads, twisting it to shoot down Gigan. Mechagodzilla returned the favor by opening fire on Ghidorah, and both the Godzilla of flesh and the Godzilla of steel attacked Gigan while Ghidorah was down, but Ghidorah swiftly recovered and attacked both Godzillas. By then, the Dimension Tide's countdown began, and Ota rushed to get the wounded Gigan into firing range while Ghidorah and Godzilla fought. The Dimension Tide fired, and the resulting black hole consumed both King Ghidorah and Gigan, finally ending their assault on Earth.
