Mothra is a giant monster who first appeared in IDW Publishing’s 2016 comic book series, Godzilla: Rage Across Time. A giant divine moth that has existed as far back as the Cretaceous period 136 million years ago, Mothra is a benevolent being that dedicates her existence to fending of malicious monsters such as her dark equivalent, Battra. During the Middle Ages when the Black Death spread across Europe, English warriors travelled to her temple and asked for her help, which she obliged. She subsequently battled the supposed source of the infamous infection, Megaguirus.
Name
The name "Mothra" is the suffixation of "-ra" (a common last syllable in kaiju names) to "moth." Since the Japanese language does not have dental fricatives, it is approximated "Mosura" in Japanese. Originally, Mothra's name was approximated in English as "Mosla," but it was later corrected to "Mothra" by the time of the release of her debut film[2]
Design
In issue #3, Mothra's design is identical to her 2003 design, albeit with her front wings bearing a similar shape to the wings possessed by Mothra Leo's aqua form. Additionally, the stripes toward the the base of her wings are closer to yellow and tan as deterred from the traditional orange and black.
In issue #5, Mothra’s design is identical to her 1964 design, though she is much furrier and is heavily adorned with orange accents and patterns. Her mandibles are abnormally enlarged and her wings are outlined with white hair.

- ↑ Mothra herself doesn’t appear in Godzilla: Rage Across Time issue 1, but the Shobijin do. As such, it is more than likely that Mothra opposed the Mongols despite not appearing during the battle.
