Here is my theory of how Godzilla Awakening fits in with the MonsterVerse Canon. Please feel free to post critiques about by theory and point out anything that doesn't make sense to you. Thank you for reading.

Many people dismiss Godzilla awakening as non-canon even when legendary didn't confirm it to be. Here's my theory of how it fits in. there's Randa’s ship that got attacked, and he said it was attacked by only one monster; I think the ship was attacked by Godzilla (or Shinomura in its search for radiation) when he was tracking down the shinomura, and in Kong: Skull Island Randa said Monarch was commissioned in 1946 (with the goal of finding Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) which was one year after Godzilla and shinomura's awakening in 1945. Many people don't read the comic correctly and think Godzilla was awakened in 1954 but he was awakened by Hiroshima along with Shinomura. Godzilla was only nuked in 1954 (which was shown in the movie) and that was the ending in Godzilla awakening, but the movie never showed the footage of Shinomura in that montage, and that's why people dismiss it as non-canon or a discrepancy. The reason I think Randa’s ship was attacked by Shinomura in the events of Godzilla awakening is because Godzilla and shinomura were sinking ships and taking down Russian and US submarines throughout a long period of time in the comic (1946-1953) that was also mentioned in the movie; I think Randa’s ship was one of those that were attacked, and after Randa's ship was attacked he joined monarch in 1952 so he can search for the monster that attacked his ship and this lead to the discovery of skull island as Randa hoped to find Godzilla ( and or shinomura as he never specified the monsters features) but found the Skullcrawler's and Kong instead. Then there’s the cave paintings, in Godzilla awakening Godzilla is said to be millions of years old and is thought to have slept for all that time, but that was a speculation made by Seriwazawa’s father; the reality is Godzilla had woken up many times before 1945 as was shown in the comic through cave paintings and drawings found around the globe that show Godzilla wandering around and in Kong: Skull Island the after credit scene showed cave paintings of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan fighting which proves the fact that Godzilla has awakened many times before which was also shown in Godzilla awakening. Even if no more MonsterVerse media nods to Awakening it still fits in pretty well with the timeline and it would be foolish of legendary to make it non-canon.

Here's a timeline I constructed based on what I noticed

MONSTERVERSE:

PRE-MONSTERVERSE

  • Godzilla is an alpha predator in the Permian ere and fights other monsters.
  • Godzilla is sighted in Germany, France, and Japan
  • Godzilla fights King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan

GODZILLA AWAKENING

  • Godzilla and Shinomura are awakened by the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945
  • Shinomura starts attacking ships across the pacific (1946-1950) and is confronted by Godzilla nearly every time
  • Monarch is first mentioned in 1946
  • Cave paintings and ancient drawings of Godzilla are discovered
  • Nuclear submarines take excursions to find Godzilla with no avail but still disturb Godzilla in 1950(which goes unnoticed) and in 1954 (1954 is mistaken for his awakening due to no prior knowledge of him)
  • Godzilla and Shinomura are nuked in bikini atoll.

PRE-KONG SKULL ISLAND

  • Monarch is founded in 1946
  • Randa's ship is attacked by one of the monsters
  • Randa joins Monarch in 1952

KONG SKULL ISLAND

  • Skull island is discovered via a stability photo and a survey time is held
  • Survey team is attacked and most are killed by native species
  • Monarch reveals cave paintings of Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan to James Conrad and Mason weaver.

BEFORE GODZILLA (2014)

  • Unknown Giant monster Skeleton is discovered along with M.U.T.O. Cocoons (1999)
  • Male M.U.T.O. Burrows into Janjira reactor and feeds for 15 years.

SKULL ISLAND THE BIRTH OF KONG

  • The remains of Aaron brook's expedition to skull island are discovered floating in the pacific in 2012

GODZILLA (2014)

  • Military footage show Godzilla about to be nuked in bikini atoll in 1954 however they do not show Shinomura.
  • Male M.U.T.O. Hatches and escapes from Janjira and calls to its mate which arouses Godzilla
  • The male M.U.T.O. Starts rampaging across the pacific and sighting start to emerge
  • Godzilla fights male M.U.T.O. In Honolulu
  • Female M.U.T.O. Hatches in Nevada and rampage across Las Vegas before arriving in San Francisco.
  • Godzilla fights and kills the M.U.T.O.s in San Francisco
  • Godzilla then leaves and head back to the ocean
  • M.U.T.O. Files become public knowledge and monarch's true purpose is revealed

GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS TBA

GODZILLA VS KONG TBA

Other(these are based on some reasons why people think Godzilla awakening is non-canon):

Ishiro Serizawa mentions being in Hiroshima but he never specified whether he was an adult or child and in the movie, he showed his father’s watch several times saying it was his fathers and in the comic Godzilla awakening it showed him as a child in Hiroshima and later showed his father giving him the watch along with pictures of Godzilla.

One possible explanation for Shinomura’s absence in the movie was because the screenwriters didn't want to disappoint the audience with showing a creature in the film that would only die in the opening, after all most people would want to see it fight Godzilla.

Godzilla cave paintings form multiple times in human history are shown in Godzilla awakening. The cave paintings in the Kong: Skull Island after-credit scene are some of many.

In Godzilla awakening Godzilla is said to sleep for millions of years until Hiroshima but that was just a speculation by Seriwazawa’s Father when in fact Godzilla could have awoken multiples times in human history to fight off threats. This could be why there's a cave painting of Godzilla fighting Ghidorah. Even in Godzilla awakening it showed ancient drawings and paintings of Godzilla from France (30,000 B.C.), Japan (12th century) and Germany (1502). Also, Godzilla fighting King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan just can't be a prophecy of Godzilla about the fight as people would have to know about them to make the prophecy. This means they fought before and the cave paintings warn that they will fight again.

In Godzilla Awakening Monarch was first mentioned in 1946 and in Kong Skull Island Randa said it was founded in 1946.

Serizawa contradicts all of Awakening with one line in the film: "In 1954, the first time a nuclear submarine ever reached the lower depths, it awakened something." The reason for that is what everyone always knocks the film for: pacing.

In the script dated 6/20/12, the Godzilla Explanation Scene starts like this:

STENZ: But these “Zilla” things are all extinct?

HONDA (former name of Serizawa's character): Maybe not. There was one, sixty years ago. First sighted after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We believe the nuclear radiation affected him somehow. He became the bane of your atomic fleet. At first, you thought it was the Russians, they thought it was you, eventually both countries made a pact to kill it. All those nuclear tests in the South Pacific? They weren’t tests.

Now here's Max Borenstein in an interview with The Mary Sue:

TMS: How did the idea come about to do a graphic novel as a prequel?

Borenstein: Well, in the case of the story that we decided to explore in the graphic novel, its genesis was a speech in the film—a moment in the film—that had been a part of the movie from early days. That was something that survived all the way through in the film and still exists, but by the nature of the moviemaking process, it wound up being significantly trimmed down. We had to refine it, and some of the details about it wound up by the wayside.

So the intent to make the two sync up was there, but the needs of the movie took priority. Also, Legendary didn't approach Borenstein about doing a prequel comic until principal photography was already underway, so Shinomura never would've been considered for the film.

In the comic they had many submarine excursions searching for Godzilla in the 50's, but Monarch probably only noticed Godzilla in 1954 and mistook it to be his awakening due to very little prior knowledge of him as all they had were cave paintings and drawings.

Awakening says that Monarch didn't believe Godzilla was real until 1954, yes, but Serizawa's father had interviewed plenty of eyewitnesses before then. It's totally implausible that his son, who had spent decades of his own searching for Godzilla, would be unaware of that research.

Anyway, Kong: Skull Island seems to favor the Awakening version of Monarch's history, so I guess it got the last laugh after all.

in the comic Serizawa's father gave him a box with some pictures of Godzilla and I assume that the comic's events were being to by seriwazawa' father, and in the comic Serizawa had doubts about his fathers story so he probably wanted to conduct his own research to confirm It for himself.

i am pretty sure that it fits in the monsterverse because from what i see godzilla have scars before fighting the mutos in Godzilla 2014 the scars are from Shinomura

Serizawa didn't believe his father had seen a monster in the ruins of Hiroshima seconds after first hearing about it. That's the only point in the comic where he questions what his father is telling him.

The think cave painting of Godzilla fighting King Ghidorah is supposed to be a prophecy, Basically, people in ancient times knew of the existence of these creatures, whom they both feared and revered, and predicted that one day these titanic beasts would clash in an epic battle which would cause untold death and destruction (represented by the flames and skulls). It's probably some sort of apocalyptic prophecy.

I hope that's the case -- and with King of the Monsters looking like a Ghidorah remake in terms of the monster cast, a prophecy would be fitting -- but there's nothing in that post-credits scene to suggest it.
