Ultraman (ウルトラマン,   Urutoraman), real name Lipiah (リピア,   Ripia), is an alien who appears in the 2022 Toho, Tsuburaya Productions, and khara film Shin Ultraman. The character first debuted in the 1966 Tsuburaya Productions series of the same name.

Name

As the name implies, "Ultraman" is a combination of the English words "ultra," spelled in Japanese as urutora (ウルトラ), and "man" (マン).

In the original Ultraman series, Ultraman stated that he had no true name, and Hayata began calling him Ultraman.

In Shin Ultraman, he is tentatively classified as Ultraman by the SSSP as a shortening of Giant Humanoid Creature Ultraman (巨大人型生物ウルトラマン,   Kyodai Hitogata Seibutsu Urutoraman). Zoffy at one point refers to him as "Lipiah" (リピア,   Ripia), assumed to be his real name, before correcting himself to Ultraman.

Development

Design

Ultraman resembles the third Ultraman suit used in the original series. However, his physique is slender and tall, and the iconic Color Timer located on his chest is missing, a reference to the original Ultraman design by Tohl Narita.[8] Because he is a CG creation, Ultraman lacks eyeholes for a suit actor to see out of and a dorsal fin to hide the zipper of the suit. His signature chest patterns are thinner and more angular than his original counterpart while the lower "pants" design has an indent at the bottom of each thigh.

When Ultraman first lands on Earth, his patterns are a silver that is only slightly darker than the rest of his body. His face is modeled after the suit used in the 1966 series' first 13 episodes, with a slightly open mouth and an decrepit-seeming appearance.

The beam was able to destroy Neronga in a single hit and injured Zarab to the point that he was forced to shed his Ultraman disguise, but was overpowered by Mefilas's own energy attack and failed to breach Zetton's shield.

Ultra Slash

Ultraman can conjure the Ultra Slash by bending his arms towards each other and orienting his right to face up. From there, he throws the serrated ring of energy. It is capable of slicing clean through buildings and was able to kill Zarab instantly. Additionally, Ultraman can create a larger variant of the attack that seperates into eight smaller Ultra Slashes. However, Mefilas was able to swat away the Ultra Slash with little issue and Zetton's forcefield completely negated it.

Gabora (ガボラ,   Gabora) is a burrowing reptilian kaiju who appears in the 2022 Toho, Tsuburaya Productions, and khara film Shin Ultraman. The character debuted in the ninth episode of the original 1966 Ultraman series, "Lightning Operation", and later featured in the 1993 U.S.-filmed series Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero. The Shin Ultraman version of Gabora also appears in the non-canonical web series Shin Ultra Fight.

Name

In-universe, Gabora is presumably named "on impulse" by the Disaster Prevention Agency Minister like other kaiju before him, including Neronga.

Development

Tohl Narita designed the original Gabora for the 1966 Tsuburaya Productions series Ultraman.[1] He was the last of four Ultra Q and Ultraman monsters to be portrayed by a remodeled Baragon suit originating from the 1965 Toho film Frankenstein vs. Baragon, preceded by Pagos, Neronga, and Magular. Legendary suit actor Haruo Nakajima, who played Baragon, also portrayed these four monsters.

In Shin Ultraman, Gabora's CG model was made from a modified Neronga model, cutting costs and referencing their shared real-world origin.[3] In the film, SSSP biologist Yumi Funaberi notes the similarities between the two monsters, as well as Pagos, foreshadowing their true nature as bioweapons.

In Shin Ultra Fight, one or more motion capture performers from Stunt Team Gocoo portrayed Neronga.[2] Their fight choreography was improvised, with the principle that there were no bad takes, and only refilmed in the case of technical malfunctions with the CG models.[4] The animation was spearheaded by Studio Bros and Modeling Bros in association with Shirogumi and alphaliez,[2] who used the video game engine Unreal Engine.[4]

Design

Gabora has a similar body structure to that of its predecessor Neronga, as remarked by the SSSP, with identical torso colors along with similar fangs. The main difference is the purple, biomechanical drill structures on its back to its tail and the conical head plates, with a toothed collar wrapped around Gabora's neck being behind them. The plates are silver tinted on the outside while the insides are fleshy colored crimson. Gabora also has a skeletal head which bares a resemblance to that of Pagos, increasing the similarities between these three creatures.

Personality

Gabora is similar to Neronga on terms of behavior. It is a territorial beast with a hostile temper. Roaring in fury or pain at being hit with the MOP IIs. It is implied he attacked the nuclear waste management facility purely for feeding. Unlike Neronga, it attacked Ultraman without retreating. Despite its attacks doing no damage.

Origins

Gabora is the eighth and final kaiju bioweapon awakened by environmental devastation caused by humans and secretly controlled by the alien Mefilas. The monster's original creator is unknown.

A subterranean Kaiju is spotted tunneling toward a nuclear waste storage facility, and the SSSP is sent to deal with the threat. An American Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit drops Massive Ordnance Penetrators into the Kaiju's path, but fails to stop it before running out of ammunition. The SSSP determines that the subterranean Kaiju, dubbed Gabora, is similar to Pagos and intends to feed on the nuclear material. SSSP members don protective suits in order to get closer, but Kaminaga slips away. Running through the woods, Kaminaga pulls out a device which he activates, causing him to transform into Ultraman. The SSSP witnesses Ultraman suddenly appear from the ground, noticing that the once-silver patterns on his body have turned red. Ultraman stands before the nuclear facility as Gabora emerges from below ground and charges toward him. Realizing that destroying the nuclear-powered Gabora with his beam could trigger an explosion and spread fallout across the area, Ultraman instead tries to block Gabora's spinning drill-covered head from penetrating the facility. Finally, Ultraman is able to lift and throw Gabora away. Furious, Gabora opens the drill around its head, with the SSSP noticing its strong anatomical similarities to both Pagos and Neronga. It fires a beam of energy that strikes Ultraman, who withstands the blast as he slowly approaches his foe. After closing the distance, Ultraman punches Gabora in the face, felling it instantly. Ultraman lifts Gabora's body and looks back at the SSSP before taking off and flying away.

Abilities

Durability

Gabora skin is is durable enough to receive no damage from GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators. The only true place that seems to be vulnerable to damage, is the creature's head.

Drill tendrils

The two rows of spinning plates on Gabora's back can partially detach from his tail, allowing them to move freely, Gabora is capable of using these tendrils as a means of high speed locomotion when flipped on his back. Additionally, they are sharp enough to puncture the base of a mountain and wield the necessary strength to keep him perfectly in place.

Radiation

Gabora primarily uses radiation as sustenance but he can also repurpose this energy to emit an blue heat ray from his mouth, strong enough to visibly push Ultraman back. He is able to control the intensity of this beam at will but even at its lowest-shown state of power, the attack releases massive amounts of radiation into the environment.

Head plates

The plates that surround Gabora's head can close, creating a drill-like structure that can spin at rapid speeds. While this is mostly used for the purpose of burrowing through the ground, this adaptation also serves as his primary weapon. The plates can also rotate while they're open, which seemingly serves as the catalyst for Gabora's irradiated heat ray.

Compressible Limbs

Gabora's limbs can be compressed and stored on its torso, so for when he whirls with its tail drills, they don't get in the way.

Zarab (外星人ザラブ,   Alien Zarab) is an alien who appears in the 2022 Toho, Tsuburaya Productions, and khara film Shin Ultraman. and is based on the alien of the same name who first appeared in eighteenth episode of the 1966 original Ultraman series, "Brother from Another Planet."

Name

Zarab's name was created by flipping the syllables of ブラザ, a Japanese Romanization of the English word "brother".

Development

to be added.

Design

Zarab is very similar to his Showa counterpart, but there are some remarkable differences. The scales around his head are tinted blue, separating it from his brown skin. His eyes are a glowing bright blue. His mouth is more seamlessly integrated into his face, being barely visible until it opens. The openings on his cheeks and where his ears are possibly located lack their red and blue coloring; instead being depicted as deep holes with another pair of blue eyes in them. The most significant characteristic is that Zarab's back appears to be hollow, showing only crimson insides which gives him the appearance of being sliced in half. However, it is merely invisible as displayed when Ultraman was able to grab onto the surface of Zarab's back.

While taking on his Imit-Ultraman disguise Zarab appears Identical to Ultraman with the exception of Hexagonal shaped eyes.

Personality

Alien Zarab is an extraterrestrial of stoic, cold and manipulative demeanor. He talks to all those on Earth that interact with him with a emotionless, yet polite demeanor. Nevertheless, his devious streak shows, when he withholds some answers to questions about his motives or means. Alongside appearing to the Japanese government as smaller than them, yet showing a more average height to Ultraman. He sees his goal of destroying mankind as merely a task to be done. Taking no ill-will towards humanity, remarking that they are no different than him in their methods. Even commending them for their technological advance. Despite his subterfuge based means, he is willing to fight Ultraman by himself instead of fleeing. Despite his appearance ruining his frameup.

One night, their servers are suddenly wiped as their headquarters lose power. As Funaberi laments the complete loss of all of their data, a bizarre creature wearing a cloak and hat appears in the SSSP office. The creature introduces himself as "Extraterrestrial No. 2," Zarab. He apologizes for wiping the SSSP servers, saying it was an unintended consequence of materializing in the building, and promptly restores the power and all data. Zarab requests a meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan to form a treaty, which is granted in secret. Zarab reveals many details about Ultraman's nature, such as that his body and energy attacks are composed of the element Spacium-133.

Kaminaga secretly meets with an associate in his car to obtain information about Zarab's activities. He learns that Zarab has been holding secret meetings with government officials even outside of Japan, drafting treaties that vastly favor him. After his associate leaves, Zarab suddenly appears in the car next to Kaminaga. He asks Zarab what his true intentions are, and the alien responds that he is pitting humans against each other so that they will wipe each other out, allowing him to claim the Earth for himself. When Kaminaga says he will stop him, Zarab responds that he will simply have to detain him and uses his powers to knock him unconscious, before turning invisible and carrying him away. That night, Ultraman suddenly appears in Yokosuka and begins destroying the surrounding area. While much of the government is quick to declare Ultraman its enemy, the SSSP suspects all is not what it seems. Furthermore, Kaminaga has vanished without a trace, while videos showing him becoming Ultraman have leaked online. Zarab urges the Japanese government to destroy Ultraman, all while detaining Kaminaga in a building in Tokyo. Zarab asks Kaminaga where the Beta Capsule that enables his transformation into Ultraman is, but is content that at least Kaminaga does not have it.

At SSSP headquarters, Asami discovers an envelope addressed to her from Kaminaga containing the Beta Capsule. When Ultraman appears in Tokyo and begins causing destruction again, Kaminaga's associate gives Asami a way to track his location. She finds Kaminaga handcuffed to a chair in the building where Zarab is detaining him, and frees him from his restraints before handing him the Beta Capsule. Suddenly, the Imitation Ultraman tears through the building and grabs Asami in his hand. Kaminaga activates the Beta Capsule and transforms into Ultraman, retrieving Asami and setting her down safely. Ultraman fights his impostor until its disguise is damaged, revealing it as Zarab. Zarab tries to fly away, but Ultraman pursues him. After a brief dogfight, Ultraman forms a disc of energy in his hand and throws it at Zarab, slicing the alien cleanly in half.

To be added. a disembodied voice tells them that this was merely a demonstration. Suddenly, the giant Asami loses consciousness and falls to the ground, where she is restrained. The JSDF cannot retrieve any samples of her tissue or clothing, as she is seemingly indestructible, and readings indicate she is somehow composed of an unidentified energy. A suited man appears to the SSSP and politely introduces himself as Extraterrestrial No. 0, Mefilas. He says he actually arrived on Earth before Ultraman, and that he was the voice from before. To prove his identity, Mefilas reveals a gigantic device called the Beta Box and uses it to return Asami to her original size. Mefilas meets with the Japanese government and proposes an agreement whereby he would give the Beta Box to mankind and allow humans to attain a gigantic invincible state in order to defend themselves from other hostile extraterrestrials like Zarab. In exchange, he asks that humans accept him as their new ruler, though he promises this will not affect their laws or daily lives.

Mefilas meets with Kaminaga in a park, attempting to persuade him to accept his pact with the humans. Kaminaga asks what Mefilas' true intentions are, and the alien reveals that he intends to use the Earth's human population as bioweapons through the Beta Box. He also admits that he orchestrated all of the prior Kaiju attacks as well as Zarab's recent invasion in order to ensure the success of his plan. The first few Kaiju were dormant bioweapons on Earth that he activated and passed off as consequences of human advancement, after which he began unleashing his own advanced bioweapons with Pagos, Neronga, and Gabora. This lured Ultraman to Earth, who in fusing with Kaminaga demonstrated that the Beta Box's technology was compatible with humans. He used Zarab to make humans fear the threat of extraterrestrials, and his own demonstration of the Beta Box to make humans feel intellectually inferior and powerless, all to ensure the success of his plan. When police surround both of them, Mefilas uses his powers to teleport himself and Kaminaga to a bar to continue their discussion in peace. Mefilas reminds Ultraman that by the laws that govern both of their people, Ultraman is forbidden from interfering with the humans' treaty with Mefilas. Kaminaga responds that while Ultraman may be forbidden to interfere, the human with whom he bonded is obligated to fight back. Mefilas expresses his disappointment that they could not come to an agreement, and leaves.

Kaminaga meets with the SSSP and apologizes for involving them in all of this, but asks for their help in stopping Mefilas' plan. He says that their only option is to recover the Beta Box before Mefilas hands it over to the Japanese government, but unfortunately it is currently stored in the Planck Brane dimension, making it impossible to find using sight. However, Kaminaga says that by tracking the smell of Asami, who was in contact with the Beta Box, he may be able to find it. At the formal ceremony where Mefilas is to hand over the Beta Box, Ultraman's hand suddenly extends through the Planck Brane and grabs it. Mefilas tells a government official that he will be back, then transforms into his true form and grows to gigantic size. Ultraman throws the Beta Box into a chopper piloted by the SSSP, and they take it away. Mefilas confronts Ultraman in a nearby refinery, and the two extraterrestrials trade blows. Ultraman tosses Ultra Slices at Mefilas, who easily deflects them. Ultraman fires his Spacium Beam, which collides in midair with an energy beam fired by Mefilas. Mefilas boasts that while Ultraman's energy reserves are severely limited by his bonding with Kaminaga and use of the Beta Capsule, he possesses limitless energy through the use of negentropy. As Ultraman's energy wanes and the red patterns on his body turn green, his Spacium Beam weakens and Mefilas begins to close the distance. However, Mefilas observes a gold-colored member of Ultraman's species hovering behind him, and abruptly ends his attack. He remarks that matters have been complicated and that this planet is no longer worth killing Ultraman. He agrees to take the Beta Box and leave, then uses his powers to recover it from the chopper before vanishing.

Zetton (ゼットン,   Zetton) is an alien bioweapon unleashed by Zōffy to annihilate humanity in the 2022 Toho, Tsuburaya Productions, and khara film Shin Ultraman. The character debuted as a 'space dinosaur' in the 39th and final episode of Tsuburaya's 1966 Ultraman series, entitled "Farewell, Ultraman." Zetton crossed over with Godzilla and other Japanese pop culture characters in Banpresto's Compati Sports games Battle Soccer: Champion of the Field and Battle Baseball, released for the Super Famicom in 1992 and Famicom in 1993, respectively. The Shin Ultraman version of the character also appears in episode TI5 of the non-canonical web series Shin Ultra Fight—which recreates part of his battle with Ultraman from the original series shot-for-shot—as well as the mobile game Godzilla Battle Line.

Name

Zetton's name is a combination of the final letter of the English alphabet, Z (read as zetto in Japanese), and the final kana of the Japanese syllabary, ん (n). This name was chosen to signify finality, as Zetton was Ultraman's last opponent of his original series.[1] In Shin Ultraman, Zōffy introduces Zetton as the Ultimate Celestial Suppression Weapon (天体制圧用最終兵器,   Tentai Seiatsu-yō Saishū Heiki), with Ultraman recognizing its name to be Zetton. In Shin Ultra Fight, Zetton is given the epithet Space Dinosaur (宇宙恐竜,   Uchū Kyōryū), which he possessed in his original incarnation in Ultraman.

Abilities

Superheated fireball

Zetton's ultimate weapon is a one-terakelvin superheated ball of energy (超光熱球,   chō kōnetsu kyū), or simply fireball (熱球,   nekkyū), powerful enough to not only destroy Earth but evaporate the entirety of the Solar System and further affect an area light-years wide. Zetton creates the fireball by concentrating beams of energy projected from the yellow compartments on its chest. Zetton then splays out the angular coverings on its body and shifts its limbs into a horizontal railgun-like posture in preperation to fire.

Unnamed Energy Machine Gun

Relatively-small circular objects located in front of Zetton's torso can fire a hail of energy bullets. They are presumably some of Zetton's weakest attacks as they cause no visible pain or stress in Ultraman when he's pelted by them.

Arm Blasts

FYf2MTPaAAIZfnX .jpg

Zetton can fire red bolts of energy from the sides of its arms. Multiple consecutive shots can destroy Ultraman's Ultra-Barrier.

Durability

Zetton is protected by a kind of forcefield, making it virtually indestrucible even to Ultraman's weaponry. According to Ultraman, all of the thermonuclear weapons in the world, equating to roughly 2 million kilotons of TNT, would be "totally insufficient" in damaging Zetton.

Added in Season 16, alongside Mefilas, Zetton is a is a four-star aerial unit requiring 8 energy to summon to the battlefield, putting him in a tie with King Ghidorah (2019) as the second most expensive unit to be summoned, losing only to Godzilla Earth, requiring 9 energy to be summoned.

Zetton stands in the air on the Leader area, when an enemy unit gets close, he'll start shooting his Arm Blasts consecutively at it. Zetton has four bars upon his life bar that slowly fill as he stands and attacks on the battlefield. His Arm Blasts will get increase based on the number of bars filled. Once he is killed or all the bars get full, he peforms his superheated ball of energy, with the number of bars filled determining the blast radius and the amount of damage dealt to enemy units. He has a super long reach, a wide search range, and attacks every 1.2 seconds, tied with King Caesar, making them the second units with the shortest attack speed, losing only to Moguera with a attack speed of 1.1.[2]

The only way for Zetton to reach the enemy Leader will be if the player uses KIDS to teleport him to the enemy Leader area.[3]

— Zōffy introducing himself to Ultraman. (Shin Ultraman)

Zōffy

Name

Zoffy's original name has no confirmed origin but it is speculated that it was derived from the English name Sophie. In Shin Ultraman, Zōffy is spelled with an accented ō as a reference to the script of Zoffy's debut episode.

Development

Despite being inspired by the original 1960's counterpart, this incarnation of the character is based on a misinformation made by a company creating an Ultra Monster Encyclopedia. They misunderstood that the alien that controlled the Kaiju Zetton instead of Alien Zetton. Alongside this misunderstanding they called him "Alien Zōffy (宇宙人ゾーフィ Uchūjin Zōfi). Due to media distribution being inexistent and the time, alongside the rarity of reruns, this misprinting was replicated by other media publications.[1][2]

Zōffy's design is also an homage to both the illustration on the misprint publication alongside an illustration made by Tohl Narita of a golden humanoid called NEXT (ネクスト Nekusuto) he made in 1992-95 [3]. It remains unconfirmed, but there is a possibility he was also inspired colorway-wise by another Narita drawing called Ultraman Divine Change (ウルトラマン神変 Urutoraman Shinpen), which also shares gold and black coloration.[4] Due to the fact that it uses Shin Ultraman's design (based on Tohl Narita's painting, Incarnation of Truth, Justice, and Beauty) it also lacks his fellow Ultra's Color Timer.

the 3D model for Zoffy is a modified version of Ultraman's. The black patterns on his skin are based on the aforementioned Ultra and Ultraman Ace. His face was created by processing Ultraman Jack's mask, from the Return of Ultraman series. To the point of including its imperfections, making the face look asymmetrical. The fin on his head was reintroduced after a long period of absence in Live Action.[2]

Design

Zōffy is very similar to Ultraman in appearance, sharing his physique and overall patterns. However, his skin is gold in color while the markings that cover his body are black. An extra line swoops below his chest pattern while a thin circle lays on each shoulder. Additionally, his forehead crest is black. His eyes are slightly lopsided and so are his lips, the latter creating a visage that resembles a smirk to the side.

Personality

Pencil-icon.gif Please help improve this article by contributing useful information or discussing ideas on its talk page.

Zōffy follows the Code of the Planet of Light very strictly, and comes as very cold and stern because of that. He sees the death of one sapient race as inconsequential to the overall universe. He is a being who follows hard logic. This can be seen by the fact that Ultraman's actions endangered the rest of the universe. So the destruction of humanity is but a rational solution, as they could potentially be unregulated bioweapons, unleashed upon all life in the galaxy.

Once Ultraman destroys Zetton, Zoffy saved his life, impressed by Ultraman's alliance with humanity, having discovered a way to destroy the alien machine while the extraterrestrial was in unconscious. Seeing mankind's ingenuity and determination to survive against the odds, he develops a respect for mankind. Deciding to stop antagonizing them. Nevertheless, he is still strict following of the Planet of Light's law. So he demands Ultraman to come with him to face judgement for his crimes. Even denying the rebellious member of his own species, his wish to stay on Earth to protect it. When the former requested he undo his fusion with the human he killed, Zoffy again showed disbelief, but he showed his capacity for kindness further by granting Ultraman his wish for the human to live again.

History

Reiwa era

Shin Ultraman

Zoffy first appears during Ultraman's battle against Mefilas. Causing the later to stop his plot and escape from Earth, as he implies "things could get unpleasant". Later on, he reappears before Ultraman on the forest where Shinji Kaminaga died. He tells Ultraman that humanity's interactions with Alien Mefilas have spelled danger to the multiverse. The manipulative alien's plan revealed they are compatible with Beta Capsule technology. Thanks to this, they can be exploited by other species in the multiverse. So he intends to destroy them with the aid of the Ultimate Celestial Suppression Weapon, Zetton. He will use the machine to destroy the entire solar system via launching a billion degree fireball above Earth. When Ultraman argues for the worth of humanity, Zoffy says that their potential danger, thanks to their potential evolutionary similarity, supersedes their preservation. Ultraman refuses to allow this to happen, fighting the construct in space. It is ultimately futile, as he cannot damage it. Ultraman was eventually defeated after a short skirmish. Zoffy reappears to him as he falls back to the planet, telling him to simply stand down and await mankind's destruction.

Afterwards, it is revealed that Ultraman accounted for this scenario. Giving Akihisa Taki information the functions of the Beta System. Who in turn shared it with mankind's greatest minds. Once Ultraman reawakened from his coma, he was directed by the humans to activate his Beta Capsule twice, creating a six-dimensional wormhole that could potentially defeat Zetton. Ultraman flew to space once again to enact this plan. Ending with his absorption into the wormhole and Zetton's destruction. Zoffy eventually found the other alien on another dimension, detecting his strong will to live. He declares he changed his mind, seeing mankind's potential for good. Thanks to their collaboration with Ultraman. Zoffy decides to spare humanity out of admiration, but still wants to bring Ultraman into the World of Light to answer for his Code violations. Even when Ultraman says he wants to stay to protect humanity, he denies this request. Instead, Ultraman decides to sacrifice himself for the life of the man he fused with, Shinji Kaminaga. Zoffy, despite his disbelief at Ultraman's willingness to die, decided to grant this request. Separating him from the human and returning him to life. Remarking if Ultraman has grown so fond of humanity to do such a thing.

Abilities

Flight

While on Earth, Zōffy constantly hovers above the ground. He can move in this state as shown when he meets Ultraman falling to Earth after his defeat by Zetton.

Zetton

As an adjucator from the Planet of Light, Zōffy can summon Zetton seemingly from thin air in its compact state.

Beta Capsule

Like Ultraman, he possess his own Beta Capsule. Zōffy's own model can undo Ultraman's fusion with Shinji Kaminaga. It is unknown if Ultraman's own Beta System device has likewise this quality.

Trivia

  • A close-up shot of Zōffy's face appears to be a direct homage to a similar close-up shot of his original counterpart featured in the fifth episode of Ultraman Ace "The Giant-Ant Terrible-Monster vs. the Ultra Brothers".
