The Ra ( (),   Ragō) is a drill-nosed warship first operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy in the 1995 OVA Super Atragon and its 1996 sequel Super Atragon: Part II. Constructed as the fourth Yamato-class battleship using technology developed by a subterranean race, the Ra was sunk in battle against the American ship Liberty at the end of the Pacific War. However, it was rebuilt in secret 50 years later under the leadership of surviving executive officer Mitsugu Kageyama. The rebuilt Ra was piloted in battle by Magane Hyuga against the subterraneans, who had begun invading the surface world.

The Ra is also featured in the 1996 manga Super Atragon: Giant Steel Dragon Force, which is a complete retelling of the films. In this story, rather than being sunk and rebuilt, the Ra was developed by the Japanese Navy during World War II and survived into the present day 50 years later. The ship inspired the "Ra-class" of battleships, with each major player in the war constructing their own such craft. All of the nations' Ra-class ships were deployed in response to the reawakening of the kingdom of Lemuria, which had sank into the ocean 12,000 years ago.

History

Super Atragon

After the bombing of Hiroshima the Ra is attacked by a similar warship made by the United States which posses three bow drills and is named the “Liberty.” The Lieutenant is forced by the captain to escape with a subterranean they had onboard named “Annette.” With it’s bow drill spinning with fury the Ra makes a sharp turn towards the Liberty where the two battleship strike each other and sink into the abyss. Fifty years later, our protagonist, Go whom is a decadent of the Ra’s captain, works with the UN in Antarctica along side Annette which he is unaware is a subterranean. The UN discovers a colossal monolith in the South Pole which tanks two nuclear missiles as if they were nothing. The subterranean navy reveals itself which is led by Annette’s sister, Avatar. Annette passes out while trying to contact her sister to stop and the subterranean forces absolutely demolish the United States Navy. Go wakes up in a hanger and discovers the Ra which is rebuilt and ready for battle. Onboard he discovers his father, Magane Hyuga is the captain of the Warship. The Ra breaks out of an iceberg and destroys the highly advance and deadly Subterranean Navy.
