Zmey Gorynych (Змей Горыныч, Lit. Serpent of the Mountains) is a giant three-headed dragon from Russian folklore that is featured in the 1956 Mosfilm film Ilya Muromets. The monster's portrayal in the film was one of many influences on the creation of King Ghidorah.[1]

Name

Zmey Gorynych's name (Змей Горыныч) literally means "Snake of the Mountains" or "Serpent of the Mountains" in Russian. Zmey Gorynych is also sometimes referred to as Zemy, Zmei, Zmei Gorynych, and Zmei Gorynich and was dubbed Zuma the Fire Dragon in the American version of Ilya Muromets.

Development

In Ilya Muromets, Zmey Gorynych was portrayed by a full-scale model.[2] To give the creature its fire breath, Mosfilm's head pyrotechnician, Vladimir Sukhoretsky, installed flamethrowers in each of its three heads.[3]
