Shin Godzilla Strikes Back (シンゴジラの逆襲 Shin gojiranogyakushū) was a proposed and unmade film that would've been a sequel to Shin Godzilla

Plot[edit | edit source]

Hideaki Anno describes the movie to be in vain of the Toho Champion Festival edits, wherein the cases of the Showa films, were trimmed down to focus more on the monsters and their battles, aiming for a younger demographic.

History[edit | edit source]

It was revealed in the Shin Ultraman Design Works, that Hideaki Anno wrote a proposal of the film during the filming of Shin Godzilla on February 3, 2016, titled, "Sequel Shin Godzilla Memo." The main working title was "Shin Godzilla Strikes Back" and it was presumed that Shinji Higuchi would be directing it. It was thought out to be released in 2018 that was made for those who wouldn't like Shin Godzilla, "an idea that wouldn't cost too much or take too much time." Anno gave the proposal, draft as a gift to Higuchi and Toho, but since it was done prematurely before the film was released, the discussion of a sequel ended.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Toho's Chief Godzilla Officer, Keiji Ota told Nikkei Style about an idea of a sequel to Shin Godzilla in 2018, "Shin Godzilla was a huge hit, but instead of doing the obvious idea of making a Shin Godzilla 2, instead think of a world that could be used for a long time. I'd rather make a World of Godzilla." [1]
