GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

Akira Sakaki and his wife Haruka entrusted Daichi to watch over their young son Haruo while they traveled to the United Earth headquarters to delete classified information on Godzilla. As Daichi escorted Haruo to the Aratrum, he pointed to the bus carrying Haruo's parents to the airport. Suddenly, Godzilla appeared over the horizon, and shot down a nearby Landing Ship with his atomic breath, which crashed into the bus, killing Haruo's parents and everyone aboard. Daichi grabbed Haruo's hand and quickly brought him to the Aratrum, which took off shortly afterward carrying 15,000 passengers. With Haruo left an orphan, Daichi raised him as his own grandson, along with his biological granddaughter Yuko, who was born on the Aratrum. After 22 years of space travel, Daichi volunteered for a landing mission to the surface of Tau-e to determine if the planet was inhabitable. Haruo, now a captain on the ship, believed the Central Committee was forcing elderly passengers to volunteer for a suicide mission to the planet's surface in order to reduce the number of mouths to feed. Haruo locked himself inside a Landing Ship with several explosives, and threatened to detonate them if the mission was not called off. Daichi contacted Haruo through the ship's monitor, and stressed that he and the others volunteered for this mission. They were tired from spending decades adrift in space, and could not stand to continue living on the Aratrum. Daichi said that he would prefer to finally die on solid land rather than in space. Haruo begged his adoptive grandfather not to go through with the mission, but Daichi's speech convinced him to stand down, allowing United Earth personnel to breach the ship and arrest Haruo. Haruo could only watch helplessly from a prison cell as the Landing Ship carrying Daichi and the other elderly passengers exploded upon entering Tau-e's atmosphere.

Books

GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse

A soldier in the United Earth's Far East Army, Daichi Tani was sent to Europe in 2039 to participate in "Operation: Eternal Light," a massive military operation aiming to reclaim the continent from the kaiju. Daichi Tani took part in the battle against Biollante in Normandy in September 2039, and helped successfully destroy her heart using the underground combat vehicle Moguera. Daichi became a close friend of scientist Akira Sakaki and his wife Haruka, and served as Akira's escort when Japan fell at the hands of Godzilla in 2046. Daichi was one of the 15,000 passengers selected for the emigration spaceship Aratrum, which was bound for the new homeworld of Tau Ceti-e, as were Akira, Haruka, and their son Haruo. Akira wanted to remove classified information regarding Godzilla from the United Earth's database, believing future generations should not have to remember the creature, and entrusted Daichi to bring Haruo to the Aratrum while he and Haruka visited United Earth headquarters to delete the data.
