Kensaku Ijuin (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)

Destoroyah (デストロイア,   Desutoroia, lit. Destroyer) is a crustacean kaiju created by Toho that first appeared in the 1995 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

Godzilla's final opponent in the Heisei series, Destoroyah was born from a colony of Precambrian crustaceans being revived and mutated by being exposed to the Oxygen Destroyer's chemical reactions and the conditions it created in Tokyo Bay after it was used to destroy the original Godzilla in 1954. Able to combine itself from smaller forms into a hulking monster of destruction, Destoroyah was a powerful creature who killed Godzilla Junior and was capable of nearly defeating Burning Godzilla, but was ultimately destroyed by the JSDF's cryolasers and the extreme heat generated by the near-meltdown Godzilla.

Name

Both Destoroyah's Japanese and English names are derived from "destroyer," which in turn comes from the Oxygen Destroyer weapon that spawned him. A possible reason that the name "Destroyer" isn't commonly used in various markets is because the word itself could not be trademarked by Toho. He is often referred to as "Destroyer" in dubbed versions of the film, while "Destoroyah" is Toho's official name for the character. Destoroyah's title is Perfect Lifeform (完全生命体,   Kanzen Seimei-tai).

Destoroyah's forms are denoted as Micro Form (微小体,   Bishō-tai), Crawl Form (クロール体,   Kurōru-tai), Juvenile Form (幼体,   Yō-tai), Aggregate Form (集合体,   Shūgō-tai) or Intermediate Form (中間体,   Chūkan-tai), Flying Form (飛行体,   Hikō-tai), and Perfect Form (完全体,   Kanzen-tai).

Destoroyah receives his name in the film when Dr. Ijuin witnesses the monster's juvenile forms merge together into their aggregate form. He remarks that Micro-Oxygen does not have that kind of power, and that these creatures have become a living Oxygen Destroyer, giving it the name "Destoroyah."

Development

Main articles: Ghost Godzilla, [[ and Barubaroi]].

When Toho was planning the final film of the Heisei series, it initially considered having Godzilla's final enemy be the restless spirit of the original 1954 Godzilla, under the name Ghost Godzilla. According to Takao Okawara, this idea was discarded because Godzilla's last two enemies, Mechagodzilla and SpaceGodzilla, were also doppelgangers of him.[4]

The next enemy considered was called Barubaroi, a continuously-evolving creature that would have been much larger than Godzilla and which would have defeated an Anguirus Hound and taken on its form. However, Toho worried that the name "Barubaroi" sounded too similar to "Berber," and that it could be considered insensitive.[5]

Another route for the concept was taken, and it was decided to change the creature's design to being crustacean-like in appearance and to tie it to the Oxygen Destroyer that was used to kill the first Godzilla in the original film, resulting in the name "Destoroyah." Concept artist Minoru Yoshida was the main driving force behind designing Destoroyah, having introduced the crustacean theme during the later stages of Barubaroi and creating the Juvenile, Aggregate, and Flying Forms. However, the design for Destoroyah's Perfect Form is credited to Hideo Okamoto.[6] While the suit more closely resembles some of Yoshida's concepts, the original decided design for the Perfect Form still appears on the illustrated poster by Noriyoshi Ohrai.[7] Devilman, a demon character from Go Nagai's manga series Devilman, was an influence on Destoroyah's design aesthetic.[8] This influence was initially introduced in Minoru Yoshida's crustacean-themed concepts for Barubaroi before being carried over later on into Destoroyah's final designs.

Design

Destoroyah goes through multiple forms over the course of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, with each being distinct, though sporting the same core crustacean-like elements such as dark red armor plating or skin, multiple appendages, and spiky protrusions.

Destoroyah's first form, the Micro Form, is never actually seen in the film, though artwork of it gives it a trilobite-like appearance with prominent "horns" at the sides of its body.[2] His second form is the Crawl Form, which is seen in the film and often confused with the Micro Form. It resembles a red miniature horseshoe crab, with two large spikes on its body, eight small legs, a pointed tail, and two prominent mandibles.

Starting with its third form, the Juvenile Form, Destoroyah ceases to be microscopic and its forms retain more common design elements. This form walks on a set of segmented crab-like legs, with a mound of spikes on each of its shoulders, a circular opening on its chest, and a frilled head with two orange eyes that glow yellow, and an extendable jaw inside its mouth. It also has a long tail tipped with a fork-like structure and reddish purple armor plating.

Destoroyah's Aggregate Form resembles a larger version of the Juvenile Form, with the addition of two crab-like claws on its chest and two long spear-like appendages sprouting from its back.

Destoroyah's Flying Form has the body of the juvenile and aggregate forms, but with two wing-like lobes on its sides that allow it to fly. The head of this form is unique, with a reptilian mouth rather than the crustacean-like mandibles of the other forms, along with a prominent orange horn on its forehead.

Destoroyah's Perfect Form is far larger and bulkier than any of its previous forms. It stands upright on two legs, with two large bat-like wings on its back and two smaller wings on its sides. Destoroyah's head in this form is similar to that of the Flying Form, only with much larger frills on its sides and its horn being lighter in color. In addition, it features two developed arms with three claws on its hands, and its tail ends in a pincer-like appendage.

Personality

Destoroyah is often considered one of Godzilla's most merciless, intelligent and evil foes, along with the Showa King Ghidorah and SpaceGodzilla. Unlike monsters that kill and destroy unintentionally and act only out of instinct or while under mind control, Destoroyah seems fully aware of the death and destruction he causes, and takes pleasure in causing it. His cruelty is most visible when he attacks Godzilla Junior, and later kills him while the latter is trying to reunite with his father. While Godzilla is grieving over his son, Destoroyah attacks him on two separate occasions, even appearing to laugh while he drags Godzilla by the neck. This makes Destoroyah only the second kaiju to attack Godzilla both emotionally and physically, after SpaceGodzilla. Destoroyah's strategies seem to revolve around causing as much pain to his opponents as possible, as his aggregate form is shown repeatedly stabbing Junior with his limbs and administering extremely painful doses of Micro-Oxygen into the wounds.

Non-film media also depict Destoroyah as incredibly evil and malevolent. According to Destoroyah's bio in the game Godzilla: Unleashed, Destoroyah "seeks nothing else than the total annihilation of all life-forms in existence." In the comic series Godzilla: Cataclysm, Destoroyah is described by one character as a "demon," and at one point splits apart into his juvenile forms and brutally massacres several villagers one by one. Destoroyah exhibits similar behavior in his appearances in other IDW comic series.

Origins

Destoroyah originated as a colony of Precambrian era microscopic crustaceans that had thrived living in anaerobic environments 2.5 billion years ago.[9] When Dr. Serizawa detonated the Oxygen Destroyer in Tokyo Bay to kill the first Godzilla in 1954, the resulting anaerobic conditions and exposure to the chemical weapon revived and mutated the crustaceans, and they evolved abnormally over the course of 40 years, incorporating Micro-Oxygen into their biological processes. After being disturbed by the construction of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, the organisms moved to the surface and began feeding on organic life, gradually combining with each other into larger and deadlier forms.

History

Heisei Series

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

Destoroyah's Juvenile Form in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

In 1954, when Daisuke Serizawa detonated the Oxygen Destroyer under Tokyo Bay to kill the original Godzilla, the chemical weapon awakened a colony of microscopic crustaceans that had survived in the strata under the bay since the Precambrian era. The crustaceans, which had once thrived in anaerobic environments, had an unusual reaction to the weapon, causing them to begin an accelerated and abnormal path of evolution and begin incorporating Micro-Oxygen into their biological processes. In 1996, the construction of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line in the same spot where the Oxygen Destroyer was fired drew the attention of the creatures, who destroyed an elevator and then traveled to the surface. The creatures went to the Shinagawa Aquarium, where they used Micro-Oxygen to disintegrate and feed on the fish located there. Growing larger and stronger, the crustaceans began combining with each other, eventually evolving into larger human-sized forms. The creatures traveled further inland and infested the Tokyo Telecom Center. A SWAT team was sent in to exterminate the beasts, but were brutally attacked by the monsters, which proved immune to conventional weaponry. The SWAT team eventually discovered that explosives and flamethrowers were effective against the creatures, and were able to kill several of them. One of the creatures escaped the building and tried to kill reporter Yukari Yamane, but she was saved by Kensaku Ijuin and a SWAT team, who incinerated the beast with flamethrowers.

Destoroyah's Aggregate Form attacking Godzilla Junior in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

After further analyzing the creatures, Ijuin determined that extreme temperatures destroyed the Micro-Oxygen in their bodies, meaning they could theoretically be killed using the JSDF's arsenal of freezer weapons. A fleet of Type 90 Tanks, MBT-92s, MBAW-93s and DAG-MB96s, supported by a detachment of AH-64 Apache helicopters, confronted the remaining creatures in the outskirts of Tokyo. The Maser Cannons opened fire on the creatures with their ultra-low temperature (ULT) cryolasers, while the tanks bombarded them with cadmium shells. Several of the creatures were killed, but they then converged and merged together into a single Aggregate Form. The giant beast quickly turned the tables on the JSDF, eradicating their vehicles with a ray of concentrated Micro-Oxygen fired from its mouth. Dr. Ijuin remarked that Micro-Oxygen did not possess this kind of power, but the Oxygen Destroyer did. Ijuin then gave the monster the name "Destoroyah," as it had become a living Oxygen Destroyer. Destoroyah then transformed into a flying form and flew into downtown Tokyo to resume its rampage. Meanwhile, Godzilla was about to undergo a catastrophic nuclear meltdown that would destroy the world, leaving G-Force with one desperate option: lure him to Tokyo so he would fight and hopefully be killed by Destoroyah. G-Force's psychics Miki Saegusa and Meru Ozawa used their telepathy to bring Godzilla's adopted son, Godzilla Junior, to Tokyo, knowing Godzilla would follow. When Destoroyah saw Junior, he immediately attacked the young monster, transforming into his Aggregate Form and pinning Junior to the ground. Destoroyah bit down into Junior's chest with his secondary jaw, injecting Micro-Oxygen directly into his bloodstream, causing Junior to foam at the mouth and suffocate. Junior then managed to recover and fired his atomic breath at Destoroyah, blasting off the claws on his back and forcing him to get off of Junior. Junior blasted Destoroyah again, sending him flying into a nearby refinery, which exploded. His enemy seemingly defeated, Junior reunited with his father outside of Haneda Airport.

Destoroyah's Perfect Form in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

But Destoroyah was not dead, and used DNA he had absorbed from Junior's blood to mutate further. Another explosion rocked the refinery, and from it emerged Destoroyah's demonic Perfect Form. With vengeance on his mind, Destoroyah flew to Haneda Airport, knocking Godzilla to the ground and grabbing Junior in his clutches. Destoroyah flew high into the sky and dropped Junior onto Ariake Coliseum from hundreds of feet in the air. Destoroyah then blasted Junior with his Micro-Oxygen ray, seemingly killing the young monster. Before Godzilla could grieve for his son, Destoroyah attacked him, dragging him by the neck into Tokyo Bay with his tail pincer, all while bellowing maniacally. Godzilla walked back onto land and engaged Destoroyah in combat near the airport. Destoroyah sliced through Godzilla's flesh with his laser horn, but Godzilla retaliated by firing his atomic breath directly into Destoroyah's chest, opening a gaping wound. Godzilla fired into the open wound, causing Destoroyah to vomit blood. Godzilla punched the wound, sending Destoroyah falling to the ground. Destoroyah vanished into a white mist upon striking the ground, leaving Godzilla apparently victorious. However, Godzilla was quickly swarmed by several of Destoroyah's smaller aggregate forms, which breathed Micro-Oxygen into Godzilla's face and dragged him to the ground. Godzilla got back to his feet and obliterated the creatures with his nuclear pulse, then walked to his fallen son, attempting to revive him.

As Godzilla tried and failed to breathe life back into Junior, Destoroyah returned in his Perfect Form, flying overhead and blasting Godzilla with his Micro-Oxygen ray, then dragging him into the outskirts of Tokyo with his tail. Godzilla rose back to his feet and prepared for one final confrontation with his son's killer. The two monsters exchanged blows, as Godzilla's temperature climbed to critical levels. Godzilla blasted off Destoroyah's shoulder and part of his head frill with his atomic breath, then began emitting powerful nuclear pulses, which set the surrounding area ablaze. Realizing he couldn't win the battle, Destoroyah took to the sky, attempting to retreat. The JSDF, unwilling to let the demon escape, fired their cryolasers at Destoroyah's wings, freezing them solid and sending Destoroyah plummeting to the ground below, which had been superheated by Godzilla's presence. Destoroyah impacted the ground and dissipated into a white mist, destroyed for good.

Godzilla Island

In this series, Destoroyah is under the control of Zaguresu. He is frequently deployed to defend or assist the other monsters utilised by the alien.

Abilities

Division and Recombination

Destoroyah splits apart into his smaller forms after being severely wounded by Godzilla

Like Hedorah, Destoroyah is a composite lifeform formed from trillions of near-microscopic organisms, and as such he possesses vast capacities to adapt and regenerate. The base organism resembles a miniature horseshoe crab barely larger than a speck of sand. Trillions of these creatures would later combine to form Destoroyah's Juvenile Forms, which manifested as several man-sized crustacean monsters. When threatened by the JSDF, the creatures merged again into a single, massive Aggregate Form, which evolved further into a winged Flying Form. After being wounded by Godzilla Junior, Destoroyah regenerated into its demonic Perfect Form and would later temporarily separate into multiple copies of its Aggregate Form in an attempt to overwhelm Godzilla during their battle. It appears that when the individual Destoroyah organisms fuse, they all die if the resulting creature is killed before it can split up into its smaller forms and reform. This is shown when Godzilla nearly kills Destoroyah by blasting the exposed floral pattern on his chest and Destoroyah responds by breaking into a group of Aggregate Forms.

By contrast, when the Super X3 and the military use their ULT lasers to freeze the monster's body at a microscopic level, Destoroyah cannot separate, causing all of the organisms making up the Perfect Form to perish upon colliding with the superheated ground.

Durability

Destoroyah could survive multiple hits from Godzilla's red spiral atomic ray (although he was shown vomiting large amounts of blood and losing part of his head crest to the beam), an attack which crippled and destroyed both Super Mechagodzilla and SpaceGodzilla after a few hits. While Destoroyah himself was shown to be vulnerable to extreme temperatures, the fact that Destoroyah was able to fight the overheating Godzilla many times (and actually win a majority of the encounters) is a testament to his immense strength and durability.

Physical Strength

Destoroyah drags Godzilla by the neck using his tail

Destoroyah battled Godzilla at the peak of his power, to the point where he was on the verge of melting down from the sheer intensity of his own overloading nuclear power. Destoroyah is also one of only two monsters (the other being SpaceGodzilla) who have attacked Godzilla emotionally, using the death of Godzilla Junior against him. Destoroyah easily lifted Godzilla Junior high into the air and fatally wounded him by dropping him onto Ariake Coliseum. Destoroyah was able to effortlessly drag Godzilla around by wrapping his tail around his neck, and in one instance was able to drag Godzilla all the way into Tokyo Bay.

Micro-Oxygen Beam / Oxygen Destroyer Ray

Destoroyah's Flying Form firing his Micro-Oxygen beam

In all of his forms, Destoroyah's primary offensive weapon is his ability to expel Micro-Oxygen from his mouth. Destoroyah's Juvenile Forms spewed a whitish blast of Micro-Oxygen from their mouths that could penetrate metal and disintegrate organic matter, shown when it passed through the bodies of humans after they were hit by it.

Once he reached his Aggregate Form, Destoroyah gained a more powerful variation of this ability called either the Micro-Oxygen Beam (M-O光線,   Maikuro Okishijen Kōsen) or Oxygen Destroyer Ray (オキシジェン・デストロイヤー・レイ,   Okishijen Desutoroiyā Rei). This attack took the form of a purple helix-shaped beam which possessed incredible destructive potential. Destoroyah's Aggregate Form used this attack to obliterate the JSDF units attacking it, while the Flying Form was able to level entire city blocks and even knock down Godzilla Junior with it. In his Perfect Form, this beam was even more powerful, visibly injuring Godzilla and finishing off Godzilla Junior after he was dropped onto Ariake Coliseum.

Energy Draining

Destoroyah's Juvenile Form revealing its secondary jaw

Destoroyah's Juvenile and Aggregate Forms are equipped with a secondary set of jaws inside of their mouths, from which he can fire his Micro-Oxygen beam. Destoroyah can also use these secondary jaws to directly inject Micro-Oxygen into a victim's bloodstream or drain their energy. Destoroyah's Perfect Form is able to drain a victim's energy through his tail, and utilized this ability against Godzilla when Destoroyah wrapped his tail around his neck.

DNA Absorption

According to the 1996 book Godzilla vs. Destoroyah Super Complete Works and Destoroyah's bio in Godzilla Movie Studio Tour, Destoroyah can absorb the DNA of creatures he attacks by dissolving their cells with Micro-Oxygen. Destoroyah used this ability to absorb Godzilla Junior's DNA when he bit into him, allowing him to further mutate into a bipedal form with an endoskeleton rather than an exoskeleton.[10]

Laser Horn

Destoroyah slicing Burning Godzilla's flesh with his Laser Horn

In its Perfect Form, the horn projecting from Destoroyah's forehead had the ability to generate a blade of energy powerful enough to cut through Godzilla's flesh, an ability that has since been named the Horn Katana, also known as the Laser Horn or Variable Slicer.

Spikes and Pincers

The Aggregate Form was equipped with spiked claws similar to those of a praying mantis, while Destoroyah's Flying and Perfect forms possessed a tail tipped with a grappling pincer that was strong enough to even hold Godzilla and pull him along. The tail also had the ability to drain energy and give an energy discharge.

Stomach Beam

Destoroyah was originally planned to have another attack: a beam fired from the floral pattern on his chest known simply as the Stomach Beam (腹ビーム,   Hara Bīmu). This was cut from the film, but is present in the manga adaptation, where it is shown to be powerful enough to cut off part of Godzilla's tail and break off one of his Template:Scutes. Deleted scenes from the film show Destoroyah using the beam (which is not animated and represented only by light and sparks), which easily knocks Godzilla off his feet.[11]

Weaknesses

Destoroyah explodes into a white mist and dies after being frozen and colliding with the superheated ground.

Extreme temperatures can destroy the Micro-Oxygen in Destoroyah's body and seriously injure him. Destoroyah's juvenile forms were successfully killed using flamethrowers and cadmium shells, and Godzilla's red spiral ray severely injured Destoroyah's final form, forcing him to retreat twice. The combined extreme temperatures of G-Force's ULT weapons and Godzilla's meltdown are what ultimately killed Destoroyah. The floral pattern on Destoroyah's chest may be a weak point, shown when Godzilla blasts it repeatedly with his atomic breath, causing it to bleed and causing Destoroyah to vomit large amounts of blood. When Godzilla blasts this area with his atomic breath in a deleted scene, it penetrates completely through Destoroyah's body and explodes out of his back.[11]

Filmography

Video Games

Godzilla: Save the Earth

Destoroyah appears in Save the Earth, where his rage attack in Save the Earth is the Oxygen Destroyer, where he fires a purple blast of energy into the air that comes down on his opponent, inflicting a large amount of damage.

Godzilla: Unleashed

Destoroyah as he appears in Godzilla: Unleashed

Destoroyah is a mutant in Godzilla: Unleashed. In all of these games Destoroyah is a "bruiser" character, being able to take a lot of damage while also dishing it, but is also slow. Unlike in the film, he can't fly, but he can jump very high. He gains a new ability to create energy mines that pull his enemies and then send them flying, leaving them very vulnerable. His signature attack in the games is using the Horn Katana sword generated from his horn. The attack is strong, and can't be blocked, the only weakness to it is that uses up energy whenever used. A favored tactic used by the CPU is to repeatedly strike the enemy with the laser blade when they're knocked down, during which the opponent is helpless until either Destoroyah runs out of energy or if another monster attacks Destoroyah. The CPU also favors Destoroyah's use of the Micro-Oxygen ray, and will use it repeatedly to suck in enemies towards Destoroyah, damaging them and preventing them from attacking until he runs out of Energy. In the Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed, the Horn Katana no longer uses up energy, causing some fans to view Destoroyah as unbalanced in the game (one of his grapple attacks is to impale an opponent with his laser horn and throws his opponent with his tail). However, in the PS2 version, his Horn Katana uses the same amount of energy as in Godzilla: Save the Earth, making the attack more balanced. In Godzilla: Unleashed, Destoroyah can release an orb of Micro-Oxygen energy that will suck in nearby kaiju and then detonate, which has a chance of flinging opponents across the stage. Because of Destoroyah's lack of flight in this game, he can't pull opponents with his tail, but he can strike them with it by jumping and using a special attack in midair.

Height: 110 meters
Weight: 78,000 tons

"Destoroyah is death incarnate. Born from anaerobic environments deadly to all other life, Destoroyah seeks nothing else than the total annihilation of all life-forms in existence. Although his massive clawed hands, long crescent-tipped tail, and taloned feet can tear monsters apart in a heartbeat, Destoroyah tends to use ranged attacks in compensation for his sluggish land movement. He can breathe choking clouds of micro-oxygen, emit explosive spheres of micro-oxygen, and create oxygen destroyer comets of pure annihilation. His most fearsome attack, however, is the piercing Laser Horn, which extends from his central horn. This focused energy can slice through even the strongest monster flesh and reduces buildings to rubble."

Godzilla (PlayStation 3 / PlayStation 4)

Destoroyah entering battle in Godzilla

Destoroyah appears as a boss in the game Godzilla for PlayStation 3 and 4. He has a chance of appearing in Area 10 of Stage 4. He attacks by flying at Godzilla, then hitting him with his tail. He also uses the Micro-Oxygen ray and the laser from his horn. If Burning Godzilla is selected in God of Destruction Mode and reaches 100 meters tall, then Destoroyah will appear on the final stage, which is a reference to their battle in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. In the PlayStation 4 version of the game, Destoroyah is playable in the "Invade" variant of God of Destruction Mode, as well as in King of Kaiju Mode.

Comics

Godzilla: Legends

Anguirus defeating Destoroyah in Godzilla: Legends #1

Destoroyah's first appearance in an IDW comic was in Godzilla Legends: The Underdog. In that universe, Destoroyah is the second most powerful monster next to Godzilla. He first appears attacking Sydney, Australia when a signal that was initially used to summon Godzilla instead summons Anguirus, a monster who has lived in the shadow of the Monster King. Although Destoroyah has the upper hand over Anguirus, the tide turns to Anguirus' favor when a duo who survived the more powerful kaiju's attack on a military base offer him aid and use a cryogenic material to make Destoroyah vulnerable and allowing Anguirus to slam into him, sending Destoroyah into a full-on retreat.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

Aggregate Destoroyah's leg first appears fallen off of Zilla in issue #2. In issue #3, the Aggregate Destoroyahs make a full appearance and attack San Diego, but retreat to the sea after Steven Woods and his soldiers discover that a weapon named the "ice-box" is very effective against them. In issue #4, the final form of Destoroyah rises from the sea and fights Godzilla. Before Destoroyah can kill Godzilla, Mothra and her twin larvae arrive to help Godzilla. After seriously wounding Mothra, Destoroyah is seemingly killed after he is webbed up by the larvae and incinerated by Godzilla's atomic breath. Destoroyah returns in issue #11, where he fights Godzilla alongside Manda, Gezora, and Titanosaurus. After retreating from the battle with Godzilla, Destoroyah attacks a naval fleet assembled in the area. In issue #12, Destoroyah is finally defeated by the combined might of Kiryu and Jet Jaguar, and dies after Jet Jaguar fires Kiryu's Absolute Zero cannon at him, resulting in Destoroyah freezing to death.

Godzilla: Cataclysm

Destoroyah in Godzilla: Cataclysm

Destoroyah serves as the final antagonist of the comic. Destoroyah emerges from Tokyo Bay at the end of Godzilla: Cataclysm #4. Hiroshi is terrified by the monster's appearance and identifies Destoroyah only as "his demon." Destoroyah splits apart into its aggregate forms and hunts down and brutally kills the villagers one-by-one, either by disintegrating them with his micro-oxygen rays or tearing them apart with his claws. Hiroshi falls on his knees and prays to Godzilla to arrive and vanquish the demon, but is impaled in the chest by an aggregate Destoroyah's claw, leaving him dying of blood loss and Biollante's core on the ground. Godzilla does arrive, and the Destoroyahs quickly merge together into a flying form. Destoroyah drags Godzilla into Tokyo with its tail, then flies by Godzilla and slices him with his laser horn katana and blasts him with micro-oxygen. Mothra, despite having been seriously wounded by Godzilla earlier, arrives to help battle Destoroyah. Destoroyah reforms into his final form, and blasts Mothra with his micro-oxygen beam, causing her to be disintegrated and burst in a flash of fiery light. Godzilla blasts Destoroyah in the back of the head with his atomic breath knocking the evil creature to the ground. Before Destoroyah can stand back up, he is restrained by Biollante's vines that suddenly erupt from the ground. With Destoroyah helpless, Godzilla blasts his head off with a blast of his spiral red heat beam, killing Destoroyah.

Godzilla in Hell

Destoroyah in Godzilla in Hell

Destoroyah appears in the fourth issue of Godzilla in Hell. In this issue, Destoroyah and King Ghidorah battled Godzilla in a recreation of Tokyo in Hell, surrounded by a wall of flesh. Any time any of the three monsters were killed or mortally wounded, they instantly recovered and continued their assault. Godzilla eventually tricked Destoroyah and King Ghidorah into aiding him in escape by ducking when they both fired their energy weapons and combining his beam with them, creating a blast powerful enough to destroy the wall. As Godzilla marched onward, Destoroyah, King Ghidorah, and everything else on the battlefield besides Godzilla disappeared into nothingness.

Trivia

  • Destoroyah dies in the hands of Godzilla, who is in the process of melting down, in the Godzilla vs. Destoroyah manga adaptation
A deleted scene at the end of the film shows that after Destoroyah is brought to the ground when trying to escape from Godzilla's meltdown, he rises again as opposed to dissolving. With his wings torn up from the ULT lasers, he could no longer escape Godzilla's fury, thus was forced to fight Godzilla as the monster king began to meltdown. Godzilla quickly overpowered Destoroyah, grabbing him by his horn and pummeling him repeatedly. As Godzilla melts down, the JSDF rain their ULT weapons upon him, as well as Destoroyah. Unable to stand against the immense heat of Godzilla's meltdown and the freezing cold of the ULT lasers, Destoroyah falls and evaporates. However, it was thought that having Godzilla fight Destoroyah while he melted down took away the focus from Godzilla's death, which was to be the main point of the movie. So the scene was re-edited to have Destoroyah die after the JSDF shoots him down, and allow Godzilla to have center stage as he finally dies.[12]
  • Destoroyah is the only Godzilla kaiju to have been mutated by a source other than radiation, instead being mutated by the chemical reactions given off by the Oxygen Destroyer.
  • Destoroyah is the only main kaiju Godzilla faced that appeared in a Heisei Godzilla film who wasn't directly defeated by Godzilla. Instead, he is taken down by the combined efforts of Godzilla and the Japanese self-defense forces.
  • Because Destoroyah originated as a colony of crustaceans from the Precambrian era, he is the oldest known monster to appear in the Godzilla series, being 2.5 billion years old.[9]
  • Destoroyah is the only opponent in the Heisei era who Godzilla doesn't engage in a rematch with at the end of their respective movie. Destoroyah is only fought by Godzilla once, whereas all his other opponents reappeared (sometimes in different forms) after retreating, being defeated by or defeating Godzilla.
  • Destoroyah shares many similarities with Hedorah. Both are composed of countless microorganisms sharing a single body; both possess multiple forms including microscopic, flying, and gigantic bipedal perfect forms; both are extremely difficult opponents for Godzilla, and both are incredibly destructive to organic life. The monster Shinomura from the comic Godzilla: Awakening also shares some of these traits.
  • According to the theater program for Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Destoroyah's evolution may not have ended with his Perfect Form.

Notes

  1. While the vast majority of books state that Destoroyah's Perfect Form weighs 80,000 metric tons, the 1995 Godzilla Giant Monster Diagram Encyclopedia says that Perfect Destoroyah weighs 150,000 metric tons (p. 20).
