Jet Jaguar ジェットジャガー is a heroic robot created by Toho that first appeared in the 1973 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Megalon.
Jet Jaguar ジェットジャガー is a heroic robot who first appeared in the 1973 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla vs. Megalon.

An advanced robot created by Japanese inventor Goro Ibuki, Jet Jaguar was stolen by the Seatopians and used to guide their guardian monster Megalon in his destruction of the surface world. Goro managed to sever the Seatopians' control of the robot, only to discover that Jet Jaguar had become self-aware and altered his own programming. Jet Jaguar used his newfound power to recruit the assistance of Godzilla, then grew to gigantic size to battle Megalon and Gigan. With Godzilla's aid, Jet Jaguar drove off the villainous monsters and saved the Earth, then returned to his creator. Despite making only one film appearance, Jet Jaguar has been featured in several video games and comic books.

Three Jet Jaguars appear in the TV series Godzilla Island: a silver model, Medical Jet Jaguar, and Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar. He also appears in the 2021 Netflix animated series Godzilla Singular Point as a robot built by the Otaki Factory, which was eventually destroyed after his battle with Godzilla.

Name
Across Japanese media, Jet Jaguar's name is variably spelled with (ジェット・ジャガー) and without (ジェットジャガー) an interpunct. Jet Jaguar is Toho's trademarked English name for the character, though a similar situation exists wherein English language media includes a hyphen (Jet-Jaguar) in the robot's name. Examples using "Jet Jaguar" include the Atari and Pipeworks games Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, while instances of media using Jet-Jaguar ranges from the 1998 book The Official Godzilla Compendium and the 2014 Godzilla video game. Jet Jaguar is also sometimes erroneously given the English name Jet-Jagger or the variant JetJagger, typically in Japanese media. In Godziban<nowiki/>'s third season, Jet Jaguar goes by the serial number JJ-23, a pun on nii-san as the character takes on a protective big brother role for Minilla and Little.

Director Atsushi Takahashi received muted reactions at first when he recommended Jet Jaguar for Godzilla Singular Point. Producer Takashi Yoshizawa was especially skeptical, but he ultimately decided the character's role in the plot was logical trusted Takahashi and screenwriter Toh EnJoe to execute it well. Jet Jaguar was designed by Eiji Yamamori, whose sketches were then sent to concept artist Yuji Kaneko, who determined the color and textures given to the designs. Jet Jaguar's modeling and animation was done by Orange Co., Ltd., who found its mechanical movements more difficult to animate than the organic monsters. Yamamori assisted the animators by drawing references for the character's battle damage in Photoshop, which they recreated in Substance Painter.

Design
Jet Jaguar is a humanoid robot with a pointed head. His face consists of square eyes which are usually dark blue but sometimes glow bright blue, a triangular nose, rectangular jaw, and a vent that resembles a smiling mouth across his face. He is primarily silver, though he has multicolored patterns throughout his body which vary between red, yellow, and blue. He had round yellow shoulders, blue elbows, a red upper chest featuring a downward-pointing arrow-shaped design, a yellow lower torso, red hips, yellow knees, and blue legs. His feet are silver but feature a blue arrow pattern extending from his legs. He has segmented blue padding around his neck, and similar segmented textures on his arms, hips, and legs. Jet Jaguar has a white emblem on his waist which resembles the outline of a flying bird. When Jet Jaguar flies, antennae extend from the ear-like structures on the sides of his head.
In Godzilla Island Jet Jaguar appears identical to his Showa era appearance but with a grey and silver color scheme.
In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar's basic design is mostly unchanged, though many of his features are altered. His color scheme is changed slightly, with the silver coloration changed to a cream-white color. The point on top of Jet Jaguar's head is much less pronounced, and bolts are visible on much of his body. His torso is barrel-shaped, while his arms are much longer and feature visible joints. and a vent on the base of his neck. He has black hands with three robotic claws. Jet Jaguar is gradually upgraded over the course of the series. In his initial prototype stage, he features a cockpit on his chest which houses his pilot and is covered by a door. His upper body is attached to a set of two very short legs. Jet Jaguar is next upgraded to a wheeled form which attaches Jet Jaguar's upper torso to a smaller wheeled industrial robot. This state also features antennae mounted atop each of his shoulders. Next, he is upgraded into Jet Jaguar β, with a new longer set of legs and the cockpit and door on his chest no longer present. These legs feature the traditional blue and yellow design, with the waist area where they attach to his upper body featuring the traditional bird-shaped emblem. In order to enable flight, Jet Jaguar β is outfitted with a large jetpack-like apparatus. While flying, the antenna-like structures protrude from the sides of his head.

Jet Jaguar was an advanced human-sized robot created by inventor Goro Ibuki. Having been stolen by the underground nation of Seatopia, Jet Jaguar's mission was to guide Megalon to Tokyo so the insect kaiju could destroy it. Eventually, however, Goro freed Jet Jaguar from the Seatopians' control and sent him to fetch Godzilla from Monster Island. As Godzilla made his way to Japan, Jet Jaguar flew back to the mainland and faced Megalon in battle. Increasing his size to fifty meters, Jet Jaguar attacked Megalon and was holding his own in the battle until the cyborg Gigan arrived to provide Megalon some backup. The two evil beasts were too much for Jet Jaguar, who was beaten senseless until Godzilla finally arrived. After a long fight, Godzilla and Jet Jaguar were able to defeat their foes, sending Megalon back to Seatopia and Gigan back into outer space. After the fight, Jet Jaguar shook hands with Godzilla, then reverted to his normal size and returned to his home with Goro.
After an underground nuclear test wreaked havoc on their city, the kingdom of Seatopia prepared to attack the surface world with their monster-god Megalon. Looking for a way to guide Megalon during his rampage, two Seatopian agents ransacked the home of Goro Ibuki, an inventor working on a humanoid robot. When Goro, his brother Rokuro, and his friend Hiroshi Jinkawa interrupted them, the agents quickly subdued them and made their escape. Soon after, Goro put the finishing touches on his robot, which he named Jet Jaguar.

The Seatopian agents struck again, this time seizing control of Jet Jaguar. One attempted to dispose of Goro and Rokuro in a shipping container, while the other stayed at the house to direct the robot. He revealed that the Seatopians planned to build an army of Jet Jaguars. Hiroshi escaped and set off to rescue Goro and Rokuro. In the meantime, Jet Jaguar began to steer Megalon towards Tokyo. Along the way, the insect attacked the Ogouchi Dam, inadvertently swatting Goro and Rokuro to safety. While Goro had a handheld control device for Jet Jaguar that could override the Seatopians' commands, he discovered that the range was too limited. After he explained the situation to the JSDF, they let him board a helicopter to intercept the robot. Just before they could collide, Goro regained control of Jet Jaguar and sent him to Monster Island to convince Godzilla to join the fight.

Jet Jaguar appears extensively in the TV series Godzilla Island. In the show, Jet Jaguar is represented as three distinct robots; a Silver Jet Jaguar, who was a fighting machine that battled alongside Mechagodzilla and Moguera, a Medical Jet Jaguar, who tended to the injured monsters, and a Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar, who worked to put out the fires caused by the monsters' fights.
Though disoriented at first, Megalon quickly got back on task. To ensure they had the advantage against Godzilla, the Seatopians enlisted Gigan. As Megalon approached Goro's house, Jet Jaguar reunited with his family, then flew off to face the monster, ignoring Goro's commands. Somehow, the inventor mused, Jet Jaguar had achieved free will. Megalon learned that he had achieved something else: the ability to turn himself into a 50-meter fighting machine.

Jet Jaguar and Megalon found themselves evenly matched until Gigan arrived on the scene. The robot took a beating from the duo, but their gloating came to an end when Godzilla stormed in. In the ensuing tag team match, Jet Jaguar flew Godzilla out of a ring of fire created by Megalon's napalm bombs, broke Gigan's arm, and held Megalon in place so the King of the Monsters could deliver a pair of sliding kicks. After the two villains retreated, Godzilla returned to Monster Island, while Jet Jaguar returned to his family, shrinking back to human size.

Jet Jaguar appears extensively in the TV series Godzilla Island, where he is represented as three distinct robots. The "standard" Jet Jaguar is silver in color, and formed a central part of G-Guard's monster-fighting machines alongside Mechagodzilla and Moguera. It made its only appearance in the second episode of the first story arc, shot down by Zagreth's ship moments after launching alongside its fellow mechas. Medical Jet Jaguar, clad in white with a red cross on its chest, tends to injured monsters, and Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar, a bright red variant of the original, works to put out the fires caused by the monsters' fights and played a key role in defeating Dororin.

Jet Jaguar appears in both his own limited animation segment "Go! Jet Jaguar" and as a puppet within the main "Go! Go! Godzilla-kun" segments.

In "Go! Jet Jaguar", he is a robot developed by Dr. Roborobo that has developed free will. When being introduced at a press conference and declaring his free will, he grows giant to help Godzilla fight Megalon, but ends up stalling out because he isn't programmed for combat and has to install an application for it and restart and shrink in order to finish, much to Godzilla's frustration. When he's finally ready to battle Megalon, a single hit from Megalon's drills reveals that he is an inflatable robot and deflates back down to normal size. In the episode "Red Balloon", where Little and Minilla witness him helping retrieve a young girl's balloon from a tree, the giant sized Jet Jaguar is further revealed to fly by way of being propelled from air escaping the bottom of his feet.

Jet Jaguar appears within the puppet segments of the 3rd Season as JJ-23, taking on a protective big brother role for Minilla and fighting Gabara whenever he catches him bullying Minilla or the other monsters on Godzi Godzi Island.

Otaki Factory exhibited Jet Jaguar at the Summer Monster Fair in order to protect the town from a UFO Yun Arikawa and Haberu Kato had detected the previous day. As Jet Jaguar was set up, a Rodan appeared and menaced the festival.
"Gamesome"
Goro piloted Jet Jaguar and attacked Rodan to protect Yun and a child he was saving. During the battle, Jet Jaguar lost its arm and the hatch to the pilot seat, causing Goro to fall out. As the Rodan chased him down, Yun activated Jet Jaguar’s AI and had it do a dance to briefly distract the Rodan. However, the monster quickly dispatched the robot and went after the town, forcing Yun to add fighting moves to the AI and reboot Jet Jaguar while he and Goro distracted Rodan. Once Jet Jaguar rebooted, it attacked the Rodan, only for the creature to attempt to fly away and die midair. With the threat eliminated, Jet Jaguar sat with Yun until Goro could be taken to the hospital, then was moved back to Otaki Factory to await repairs.

Jet Jaguar, now fully repaired and its legs replaced with a wheeled tripod, was taken by Goro to an event to hunt Anguirus on a golf course, where Goro planned to capture the monster. The plan was foiled once Anguirus appeared, having grown too large for the cage, forcing Jet Jaguar to confront the monster.
"Enfatico"
Jet Jaguar battled Anguirus, but was overpowered by the larger kaiju, who played with its limp body. Once Jet Jaguar recovered, Goro borrowed Genzo's harpoon cannon and put the gun directly up to Anguirus's chest before shooting it, seemingly killing the beast. Goro watched the hubbub around the monster with Haberu and Yun until Anguirus recovered, having only been asphyxiated into a brief state of unconsciousness. Genzo and Goro quickly loaded another harpoon into the cannon and attempted to confront the monster again, but Jet Jaguar was left decapitated and Goro unconscious. Out of options, Yun had Yung, his smartphone AI, pilot the mech while Yun told him where to aim from Jet Jaguar's shoulder. They once again confronted Anguirus, drawing the monster towards them until they got a clear shot, shooting it in the head and finally killing it.
"Omniarch"
After the battle with Anguirus, Jet Jaguar was repaired and given new legs, as well as the Spear of Anguirus, shaped from one of the monster's horns. As the robot was finalized, Yung became its permanent pilot, rechristened "Jet Jaguar Yung". With these upgrades, Jet Jaguar set off to Tokyo with Goro, Yun, and Haberu to hunt Godzilla.
"Graftage"
En route to Tokyo, the group found that Godzilla had seemingly died fighting the military. Jet Jaguar watched from the back of the Otaki Factory truck, commenting with wonder on how clouds were beautiful and how it felt to have a body. As the humans stopped to look at the corpse of a Manda, Jet Jaguar played with some kids until he was called off to investigate a nest that had appeared over a marina with three of its workers. Jet Jaguar conversed with Haberu and told him he had won in his games against the kids by observing their eyes and muscle movements, which Haberu called out as cheating, but Jet Jaguar stated there was nothing against it in the rules. Yun told him to look into Homo Ludens, a book on how humans used play to create a better society. Jet Jaguar suddenly scanned an unknown entity, the spider-like Kumonga. Jet Jaguar quickly dispatched it, but six more then appeared and surrounded them. Jet Jaguar informed the group to run as he handled four of them. Jet Jaguar managed to disable all of the Kumonga attacking him, while tracking down and killing one that had pinned Yun as the group realized one of the monsters had escaped and carried off one of the Marina employees. Jet Jaguar investigated the nest, scanning to find 20 Kumonga inside as the pieces of the slain ones suddenly reanimated and returned to attack the group.
"Erumpent"
Jet Jaguar held off the Kumonga until his companions took shelter inside an office in the marina, and continued to fight them as his battery ran low. After Kanda was freed, the humans made a break for the boats while Jet Jaguar defended them. As he did so, he became engrossed in a duel with a similar monster, Kamanga. The sparks from the Spear of Anguirus colliding with the monster's blades ignited gasoline spilled during the battle, setting the nest ablaze. Jet Jaguar battled his way to the roof, where Hanenga and Zenbunga joined the battle. With his battery nearly dead, he purged his main battery and made a dash for the boat, clinging on as his battery died and leaving the burning nest behind.
"Encipher"
Jet Jaguar, Yun, and Haberu returned to the mansion they had been sent to the month prior to look over the notes of its owner, Michiyuki Ashihara, and found that he had written down dates that corresponded with messages sent between Yun and a woman he had been messaging about Archetype. However, the dates were in the wrong order. Yun asked Jet Jaguar to play the messages in that order, but found them unhelpful. Jet Jaguar then told his companions that two dates hadn't been assigned to the messages, one a call from Misakioku Radio Observatory and another that would occur in four days, allowing Haberu to realize the person they were communicating with was Mei Kamino and Yun to realize they would be able to contact her again in four days.
"Relaunch"
Jet Jaguar traveled with Yun, Goro, Haberu, and Shunya Sato to Tokyo via boat in order to hunt Godzilla. Enroute to their destination, Yun and Haberu listened to the messages Ashihara had laid out once again. When he finished reciting them, Jet Jaguar stated that rereading the messages made him feel emotionally uneasy, when he suddenly began updating and rebooting in a continuous loop up to 551 times. Yun speculated that a modified version of the song ALAPU UPALA held such a large upgrade through the concept of preformationism, and that the codes had a secondary function of referring to Jet Jaguar's memory. A Rodan attacked the group as Jet Jaguar was updating, causing the robot to come back online to swiftly kill the Rodan before hauling himself to the river's bank and continuing its upgrade. Once the Update was finished, Jet Jaguar Yung had been replaced with Jet Jaguar PP, a toddler-like personality that could learn extremely fast. The new AI revealed coordinates the group needed to head towards, 100 meters above Tokyo Station.
"Explorer"
While heading for Tokyo Station, the gang had to move overland and offloaded Otaki Factory's truck and drove through Tokyo, but Godzilla's had destabilized the roads and caused the truck to get stuck but was freed by Jet Jaguar PP. After doing so, a strange moth landed on Jet Jaguar's finger. Jet Jaguar grew scared and asked Yun if it could bite, but Yun reassured him it just wanted to play. Jet Jaguar asked if this game had rules, but Yun informed him there were none as the moth flew away, the act saddening Jet Jaguar. Later that day, Jet Jaguar noticed a flock of Rodan attacking Colonel Yoshiyasu Matsubara and his men, leaping in to save them by killing four of the Rodan and scaring off the rest. After a plan was formulated between Otaki Factory and the soldiers to bring their Orthogonal Diagonalizer to Tokyo Station where Godzilla now resided, Jet Jaguar was fitted with a flight pack. Otaki Factory's truck and three trucks of soldiers departed for Godzilla while Jet Jaguar waved at Yukie Kanoko and Sato. ====="Together"=====
As the group made their way to Godzilla, a flock of Rodan gave chase. One of the soldier trucks escorting Jet Jaguar diverted the flocks attention by firing at them and then separated itself from the other three trucks. After this, Haberu helped Yun onto a seat installed on Jet Jaguar's back, but more Rodan besieged them. The other trucks were able to keep the flock's attention and separate themselves from Otaki's truck, but a third flock appeared to besiege them. Goro then noticed that the uneven terrain had created a cliff at the end of the road they were driving on, so Jet Jaguar had to launch immediately with help from Haberu as the truck plummeted off the cliff. The Rodan flock attacked Jet Jaguar, who cut down many of them before finding itself between the flock and Godzilla. Godzilla destroyed the flock with its atomic breath and caused Jet Jaguar to crashland on his back, separating the robot, Yun, and the Orthogonal Diagonalizer from each other. Yun managed to grab the Orthogonal Diagonalizer as it fell from Godzilla's back and Jet Jaguar caught him as the date predicted by Ashihara occurred, but nothing came and Jet Jaguar crash landed onto some buildings, separating him and the Orthogonal Diagonalizer from Yun as the noise alerted Godzilla to Yun's presence. Suddenly, the Orthogonal Diagonalizer glowed and revived Jet Jaguar, restored his memories, and caused him to grow to a size that rivaled Godzilla. Jet Jaguar PP battled Godzilla to save Yun, where he explained to Yun that the AI was a distant descendant of Pelops II and Jet Jaguar Yung, having been broadcasting the song from within it until he could confront the catastrophe, and that he was the code to the Orthogonal Diagonalizer. As Godzilla managed to blast its atomic breath through Jet Jaguar, he said his goodbyes to Yun and released the code, converting all of the red dust around the world into blue crystals.

After defeating Hedorah and Gigan, Godzilla had begun attacking Japan, and Jet Jaguar was activated at a military base in response. As Godzilla continued his destruction, Jet Jaguar descended from the sky and touched down in front of him, entering a battle stance. Godzilla repeatedly fired his atomic breath and Jet Jaguar ran towards him, dodging each blast. The robot's martial arts skills and agility served him well in the ensuing brawl, but Godzilla ultimately outmaneuvered him and shot him in the back with atomic breath. After pummeling him further, Godzilla stood over him, charging his atomic breath to deliver the finishing blow. Suddenly, a bolt of electricity struck Godzilla in the face, sending him to the ground. Jet Jaguar looked to the sky to see King Ghidorah appear in a massive fireball, cackling as he landed in the city and spewing gravity beams. Seeing this, Jet Jaguar got to his feet and walked over to the struggling Godzilla, grabbing the monster's hand and lifting him to his feet. Jet Jaguar is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He is incredibly strong, being able to lift and throw Gigan and hold his own in combat with Megalon. His combat skills are exaggerated in Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, where he fights using an array of martial arts-based attacks that allow him to lift and throw enemies as well as launch them into the air. In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Jet Jaguar is able to knock out Godzilla with a single punch to the face.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar was able to decently hold its own against multiple Rodans, Anguirus, and Godzilla himself. During a battle with a horde of Kumonga, Jet Jaguar threw one of the monsters with one arm after it pounced on him.
Intelligence
Intelligence
After becoming autonomous and escaping the control of the Seatopians, Jet Jaguar is capable of understanding the commands of Goro Ibuki and communicating with Godzilla using hand gestures. In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, he retains the ability to cooperate with humans and also strategically uses his size-changing abilities to defeat his foes. He flies down Orga's throat while human-sized and expands to kaiju size, tearing the monster apart from the inside. Later, when battling Destoroyah, Jet Jaguar shrinks down and pilots Kiryu to fire the Absolute Zero Cannon and instantly freeze Destoroyah.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Yun Arikawa has the AI Yung take control of Jet Jaguar's robot body during its battle against Anguirus, as its human operator, Goro Otaki, had been knocked unconscious. It quickly adapts the robot's coding to optimally use its wheeled set-up after the loss of its rear legs. Yung continues operating Jet Jaguar after killing Anguirus, quickly accepting code to skillfully wield the Spear of Anguirus.

Jet Jaguar withstands a great deal of punishment from both Megalon and Gigan but continues to fight and eventually overcomes them with Godzilla's assistance. In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, he shrugs off attacks such as a point-blank blast from Godzilla's atomic breath and holds his own against several Trilopods.

In the Atari and Pipeworks Godzilla games, Jet Jaguar becomes incredibly slow once he grows to his maximum size. Changing size also requires a great deal of energy in these games.
While Jet Jaguar is able to hold his own against most opponents in a one-on-one fight, he is susceptible to being overwhelmed by multiple enemies. He is overpowered and rendered helpless against Megalon and Gigan before Godzilla comes to his aid. He is also overwhelmed by several Trilopods in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth before Zilla finally rescues him. In the Atari and Pipeworks Godzilla games, Jet Jaguar becomes incredibly slow once he grows to his maximum size. Changing size also requires a great deal of energy in these games. In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar begins the series as a piloted mecha, resulting in his cockpit becoming an easy target for kaiju adversaries like Rodan and Anguirus. During his battle with Rodan, Jet Jaguar was incomplete, and his stubby legs made him clumsy and easily knocked off balance, causing Goro Otaki to fall out of the cockpit during the battle. He also has a limited battery span and needs to be recharged at times. This became a liability during his extended fight against hordes of Kumonga, Kamanga, Hanenga, and Zenbunga, which he barely escaped before powering down.

In this retelling of Godzilla vs. Megalon, written to coincide with Cinema Shares International's 1976 release of Godzilla vs. Megalon in the United States, Jet Jaguar appeared as in the film, but was renamed "Robotman". Arriving after Godzilla began his fight against Megalon and Gigan (here called "Borodan"), Jet Jaguar helped Godzilla defeat the two monsters, grabbing hold of Gigan and dropping him from a great height.
The Godzilla Comic
Jet Jaguar appeared as the final opponent fought by Godzilla in the Monster Warrior Godzilla chapter, as the personal fighting robot of the Japanese prime minister and backed up by Moguera, Mechagodzilla, and Mechani-Kong. Jet Jaguar charged Godzilla while riding a giant motorbike as the prime minister rambled about how the world of the monsters needed to be colonized by humans to replace the dying planet Earth. Godzilla promptly finished off all four machines with blasts of his atomic breath, then ascended back to his own reality.
Godzilla: Rulers of Earth
As Godzilla battled Orga and Gigan in Las Vegas, the human-sized Jet Jaguar suddenly appeared to enter the fray, with Professor Allison contacting Steven Woods to assure him the robot was on their side. Jet Jaguar promptly flew into Orga's mouth and grew to giant size inside him before the alien could react, causing Orga to explode. Godzilla attempted to engage Jet Jaguar and tried blasting the new robot with his atomic breath, but managed to turn Godzilla's attention back to Gigan, at which point Godzilla and Jet Jaguar worked in tandem to pummel the cyborg. As Godzilla continued the battle, Jet Jaguar noticed Orga's body beginning to regenerate and set out to destroy any regenerating pieces he could locate, though a Cryog UFO managed to subdue Jet Jaguar and collect the remains of Orga's body. After Godzilla defeated Gigan, the enraged King of the Monsters turned his fury back on Jet Jaguar just as the robot managed to recover, firing his atomic breath at point blank range and smacking Jet Jaguar with his tail. Jet Jaguar retaliated with a great punch to Godzilla's face that managed to knock him down, at which point Jet Jaguar collected Godzilla's body and flew him back out to sea. In the aftermath, with the military fearful of Jet Jaguar going rogue, more details on the mysterious robot and the top-secret Jet Jaguar Project were detailed - Yumi Nagata, head of the project, revealed that her grandfather held all the secrets to Jet Jaguar's mysterious origins and mission, but was killed when Godzilla first appeared many years ago. Jet Jaguar remained dormant for all those years and was studied until the Cryogs' assault on Area 51, at which point he escaped on his own. Dr. Nagata theorized that the arrival of the Cryogs somehow activated Jet Jaguar, but once again assured Professor Allison and the military that he posed no threat to them despite being unable to resume contact with the robot.

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #12, Jet Jaguar fought Destoroyah, even shrinking to human size, then piloting Kiryu to fire the Absolute Zero Cannon, killing Destoroyah. He then attempted to stop the humans from setting off underwater explosives while Godzilla was in the area, but did not make it in time.
Meanwhile, the Cryogs, having recognized Jet Jaguar from their past, voiced their intentions to destroy the robot, only to come under attack by Jet Jaguar himself who had come to rescue the abducted Steven Woods and Chavez. After making contact with the soldiers and killing some of the Cryogs, Jet Jaguar flew the soldiers to a nearby aircraft carrier. After the Cryogs' ship was destroyed and Orga's escape pod was launched into space, Jet Jaguar fell to his knees, losing all strength once the Cryogs were gone. Jet Jaguar remained inactive for some time afterwards, though he returned to battle Destoroyah after the Devonian monster attacked the USS Simon where Woods and Lucy Casprell were located. While fighting Destoroyah, Jet Jaguar seemed to realize he was outmatched and engaged in a new strategy - shrinking to human-size to pilot the Counter-Kaiju Reaction Forces' Mechagodzilla against Destoroyah. By utilizing Mechagodzilla's Absolute Zero Cannon, Jet Jaguar managed to freeze and kill Destoroyah. He then attempted to stop the humans from setting off underwater explosives meant to destroy the Devonian base while Godzilla was still in the area, but did not make it in time, burying Godzilla. With that, Jet Jaguar deactivated once more, unable to be recovered as he lay dormant under the ocean.

Jet Jaguar then disappeared for several years, but reemerged when the Trilopods attacked the Earth. Jet Jaguar traveled to Los Angeles to assist Godzilla in the battle against the creatures and fought against a Trilopod that had taken on Godzilla's characteristics, but was nearly destroyed by it. Thankfully, Jet Jaguar was saved by Zilla, and joined with Godzilla and his allies to defeat the Trilopods. At some point in the battle, Jet Jaguar managed to attack Gigan and defeat the cyborg monster. After Godzilla destroyed Magita, Jet Jaguar observed Godzilla and the other monsters traveling out to sea, following them from a distance. Jet Jaguar was last seen human-sized being repaired in Dr. Ando's office.
Several year later, Jet Jaguar reactivated following the onset of the Trilopods' invasion of Earth. Jet Jaguar traveled to Los Angeles to assist Godzilla in battle against the creatures, utilizing a ship anchor in the fight against a Trilopod that had taken on Godzilla's characteristics. Despite his best efforts, the robot soon found himself overpowered, but was saved by the arrival of Zilla. After the duo worked together to kill some of the Trilopods, Jet Jaguar noticed the Cryogs' ships and flew up to destroy them, at which point he engaged the upgraded Gigan. As the two battled atop the Cryogs' ships, Jet Jaguar overpowered Gigan and forced his chainsaws into the ship, which destroyed it and defeated Gigan in the process. Following the great battle, Jet Jaguar observed Godzilla and the other monsters traveling out to sea after Godzilla defeated Magita. With the Cryogs vanquished for good, Jet Jaguar fell back under the care of Dr. Yumi Nagata and Professor Kenji Ando.

Shortly after the Xiliens launched a full-scale invasion of Earth, a pod containing Jet Jaguar crash-landed in the jungles of Thailand. The robot searched available data streams for information concerning King Ghidorah and promptly discovered Cedric Nishimura's vlogs detailing his experiences with Godzilla and other monsters, at which point he ventured to Japan to learn more. Upon locating Cedric and his friends -  Anderson Scott and Emily Hill - Jet Jaguar used Japanese Sign Language to explain that he was a prototype defensive measure built by aliens from another planet, who sent him to defend Earth from King Ghidorah. However, his pod was struck by an asteroid en route, preventing him from making it to Earth in time to stop the three-headed dragon. With King Ghidorah no longer active, Jet Jaguar sought out Cedric to learn more and be given new instructions. Cedric and his friends revealed that Godzilla and King Caesar had previously defeated King Ghidorah, but asked the robot if he could help them stop the Xiliens occupying Earth. Meanwhile, the Xiliens revealed that they had revived the three-headed dragon Jet Jaguar was sent to stop and transformed him into Mecha-King Ghidorah. After learning of this and assuring the children that he would keep them safe, Jet Jaguar flew the trio to Iwate Prefecture, where Godzilla was set to intercept the cyborg.
After landing near the dueling giants, the group witnessed the additional arrival of Mothra and spoke with the Shobijin, though the cyborg proved more than a match for both Earth defenders. Hearing Cedric wish that the two monsters had more help, Jet Jaguar sprang into action and suddenly grew to the size of a kaiju. Jet Jaguar immediately landed an uppercut on Mecha-King Ghidorah's center head and used his agility to dodge the dragon's beams, though he was soon struck by Mecha-King Ghidorah's eye lasers, which forced him to revert back down to human size. As Jet Jaguar recovered, Godzilla managed to critically injure the cyborg by ripping off its center head, at which point Jet Jaguar grew once more. Grabbing the cyborg, Jet Jaguar proceeded to fly into the atmosphere and tossed Mecha-King Ghidorah into the depths of space, ending his brief reign of terror. Returning to human size, Jet Jaguar rejoined Cedric, Emily, and Anderson as Godzilla and Mothra dealt with the Xilien army and forced them into retreat. In the aftermath, Jet Jaguar sought out the last few remaining Xiliens who did not retreat while the Shobijin revealed to the kids that Godzilla was not going to return after making his way out to sea, having accomplished his goal of defending Earth. However, the Shobijin assured them that the Earth had more protectors in the forms of Mothra, King Caesar, and now Jet Jaguar, who were going to continue defending the planet from anything that wished to do it harm in the future.

Jet Jaguar (ジェットジャガー,   Jetto Jagā) is a heroic robot who first appeared in the 1973 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla vs.

In Godziban's third season, Jet Jaguar goes by the serial number JJ-23, a pun on nii-san as the character takes on a protective big brother role for Minilla and Little.

Development

Jet Jaguar was the result of a monster design campaign held by Seiyu from the end of 1971 to January of the following year, called "Children Monster University" (ちびっこ怪獣大学,   Chibikko Kaijū Daigaku), which was co-sponsored by Toho and Tsuburaya Productions.[11] In March of 1972,[11] a number of the kids who had submitted designs for the campaign were invited on to the Japanese television program Kokinji Katsura's Afternoon Show, where the winner was to be announced and a suit inspired by the winning design revealed.[12] On this show, it was also announced that the winner of the competition would have their design featured in Toho's next Godzilla film, which would ultimately become Godzilla vs. Megalon.[12] The winner of the contest, a boy named Masaaki Sano (佐野雅昭), had submitted a drawing of a monster called Red Alone (レッド·アローン,   Reddo Arōn), which also went through several other names including Red Aaron (レッドアーロン,   Reddo Āron), Jet Alone (ジェット・アローン,   Jetto Arōn), and Aceman (エースマン,   Ēsuman).[3] The suit created for Red Alone bore only a slight resemblance to Sano's design with a red, yellow and blue color scheme, as opposed to his white design.[12] This suit would be used further for publicity appearances at events sponsored by Seiyu[12] as well as on other television shows.[3]

Jet Jaguar concept art for
Godzilla vs. Megalon, often incorrectly attributed to Akihiko Iguchi

Red Alone was later changed into a robot and included in the 1972 Godzilla vs. Megalon draft, Insect Monster Megalon vs. Godzilla: The Undersea Kingdom's Annihilation Strategy, in which he is described as having a "sharp figure."[11] This version of the character was scrapped along with the script, however, and Teruyoshi Nakano was recruited to supervise a redesign of Red Alone, ultimately leading to Jet Jaguar.[12] The concept drawings of Jet Jaguar and Megalon are often attributed to illustrator Akihiko Iguchi, however Iguchi has openly denied having any involvement in Godzilla vs. Megalon whatsoever, leaving the true identity of the monsters' designer or designers a mystery.[13][14] Nakano was initially reluctant in reinventing Red Alone as Jet Jaguar, due to feeling that there were already too many Ultraman-like heroes appearing at the time. However, he became inspired after deciding that rather than focusing on making Jet Jaguar's design attractive, he would aim for it to be deliberately unattractive and obnoxious.[12] Jet Jaguar's concept art has him sporting pronounced, feather-like objects protruding from his head in addition to his antennae, which was actually carried over from Red Alone's suit design.[3] Ultimately, though, the only trait of Red Alone which would survive the redesign was the pattern and coloration of its torso.

Jet Jaguar's suit was jointly-modeled by Nobuyuki Yasumaru and Tomoki Kobayashi,[15] painted by Takashi Naganuma,[13] and portrayed by Tsugutoshi Komada and Masachika Mori.[15] The suit's body was constructed of wetsuit material which was then covered in sheets of foam rubber[11] and was reportedly very flammable, so the crew had to be extra careful during filming of scenes where pyrotechnics were used.[12] Jet Jaguar's head was created by Nobuyuki Yasumaru using primarily FRP;[16] however, material from car taillights[17] which was procured from a nearby car dealership was also used for the mask's eyes.[16] The head was created in two halves which would be fastened together using bolts, thus making it impossible for the suit actor to remove the mask on their own.[16] A motor was also installed in the head to control the mechanism of Jet Jaguar's antennae extending.[3] For the close-up shots of Jet Jaguar taking off into the air, the suit actor would stand on wooden boards and be raised up in the air by a number of staff members.[3]

At least two miniature flying props were created for Jet Jaguar's flying scenes: a 1/2 scale prop made of FRP, and a much smaller version which was used to represent the robot flying at human-size next to the giant Megalon.

Yamamori assisted the animators by drawing references for the character's battle damage in Photoshop, which they recreated in Substance Painter.[18]

Personality

Pencil-icon.gif Please help improve this article by contributing useful information or discussing ideas on its talk page. A user has the following suggestion:
Needs Jet Jaguar PP's personality.

Jet Jaguar fights to protect others, and acts very much like a superhero. When not fighting, he is shown to be very friendly towards others, offering handshakes, and even carrying a child on his shoulders. According to Godzilla: Unleashed, Jet Jaguar fights as a reserve member of the Global Defense Force, offering his services to humanity in times of need. In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, he autonomously enters battles to aid humanity's military forces and the monsters of Earth. Jet Jaguar even joins CKR's forces in an assault on the Cryogs' base, communicating with others using a "thumbs-up" gesture.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar is at first just a regular mech, but as the series goes on, he is inhabited by AI that become more and more autonomous until he becomes a fully conscious being and could speak with human characters. Jet Jaguar Yung has a very curious and child-like personality, shown playing with some children and not understanding how his actions were considered unfair towards the kids, and admiring everyday things such as the clouds in the sky. Jet Jaguar PP was more like a toddler than Yung, being easily frightened by a Mothra yet expressing sadness when it flew away, and communicating more simply than Yung had.

Origins

In Godzilla vs. Megalon, Jet Jaguar was created by scientist Goro Ibuki. Jet Jaguar eventually became self-aware and gained the ability to alter his own programming, but chose to use his powers to fight for good. The game Godzilla: Unleashed references this origin, stating in its bio for Jet Jaguar that he was created by a Japanese scientist for unknown reasons. Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash even explicitly mentions Goro Ibuki by name.

Godzilla: Rulers of Earth never explains Jet Jaguar's exact origins, but it is implied he has some connection to the Cryogs, as they seemed to recognize him when he boarded their ship. In an interview, writer Chris Mowry explained that the idea for Jet Jaguar's origin was that he was built by a survivor from his homeworld that was destroyed by the Cryogs, specifically calling him the "Superman" of his planet. His creator adopted a small girl that would grow up into Yumi. His creator, however, perished in Godzilla's first attack during the events of Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters.[19]

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar was a mecha created by eccentric inventor Goro Otaki as a first line of defense against supernatural or extraterrestrial threats and to serve as a mascot for his company, Otaki Factory.

In Fest Godzilla 4: Operation Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar was a JSDF Anti-Godzilla weapon built in response to Godzilla's growing aggression after defeating Hedorah and Gigan.

History

Showa era

Godzilla vs. Megalon

Jet Jaguar battling Megalon in Godzilla vs. Megalon

Heisei era

Godzilla Island

Jet Jaguar in Godzilla Island

Reiwa era

Godziban

Godzilla Singular Point

"Terzetto"

"Theorist"
Jet Jaguar facing down Anguirus in Godzilla Singular Point

"Graftage"
Jet Jaguar playing with children

Fest Godzilla 4: Operation Jet Jaguar

Jet Jaguar kicking Godzilla in the face in Fest Godzilla 4: Operation Jet Jaguar

Godzilla gave a small roar to his new ally and Jet Jaguar returned a thumbs up. The two turned to face the golden invader, and Godzilla roared.

Abilities

Size changing

Jet Jaguar can change his size at will. He can grow from his normal height of 1.8 meters to a height of 50 meters which allows him to go toe-to-toe with kaiju such as Megalon and Gigan. In Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, Jet Jaguar becomes immune to energy attacks after shrinking to a specific size and can rapidly punch enemies to deal damage. In these games he can also grow to an extremely large height on par with Biollante, allowing him to effortlessly kick enemies into the air. In these games, Jet Jaguar can only attain these extremely small and large sizes temporarily, and will revert to his default height after a few moments.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar grew to 100 meters after receiving a code from the future for the Orthogonal Diagonalizer.

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Jet Jaguar uses his size-changing ability to his advantage against Orga, flying down the monster's throat while human-sized and then growing to his gigantic size, tearing Orga apart from the inside.

Flight

Jet Jaguar can fly at speeds up to Mach 3.5.[20] Even when weighed down by carrying Godzilla, he is able to fly with no visible signs of stress.

In the 1993 arcade game Godzilla and in the 2023 short film Fest Godzilla 4: Operation Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar appears flying with thrusters on his feet.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar can fly with the aid of a propeller pack with four rotors.

Physical strength

Jet Jaguar lifting Gigan in Godzilla vs. Megalon

Jet Jaguar is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He is incredibly strong, being able to lift and throw the 25,000 metric ton Gigan and hold his own in combat against Megalon. His combat skills are enhanced in Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, where he fights using an array of martial arts-based attacks that allow him to lift and throw enemies as well as launch them into the air.

After becoming autonomous and escaping the control of the Seatopians in Godzilla vs. Megalon, Jet Jaguar is capable of understanding the commands of Goro Ibuki and communicating with Godzilla using hand gestures.

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, he retains the ability to cooperate with humans and also strategically uses his size-changing abilities to defeat his foes. He flies down Orga's throat while human-sized and expands to kaiju size, tearing the monster apart from the inside. Later, Jet Jaguar shrinks down and pilots Kiryu to fire the Absolute Zero Cannon and instantly freeze Destoroyah.

Durability

Jet Jaguar withstands a great deal of punishment from both Megalon and Gigan, but continues to fight and eventually overcomes them with Godzilla's assistance.

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, he shrugs off attacks such as a point-blank blast from Godzilla's atomic breath and holds his own against several Trilopods.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar is able to continue fighting against Rodan, Anguirus, and Godzilla even after each had dismantled parts of its body such as his arm and head.

Spotlights

Jet Jaguar has two powerful spotlights installed in his eyes which he can use to search for or blind enemies.

Liquid nitrogen breath

Jet Jaguar could emit liquid nitrogen from his mouth in an early version of Godzilla vs. Megalon; this ability was also attributed to him in multiple publications and toys.[21][22][23][24] Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar finally used this ability on screen in Godzilla Island.

Rhino Pound

In Godzilla: Save the Earth, Jet Jaguar can Rhino Pound, where he punches the ground, triggering a tremor which catapults nearby kaiju into the air.

Hose

Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar is equipped with a water hose.

Liquidized medicines breath

Medical Jet Jaguar can spray liquidized medicines, including analgesic mist, from its mouth.[25][26]

Hologram

Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar can produce a hologram from its eyes.[26]

Tornado

In the game Godzilla: Save the Earth, Jet Jaguar's rage attack involves him spinning around until a tornado forms around him. This tornado is powerful enough to push away and instantly knock down monsters by simply touching them.

Handclap

In Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, Jet Jaguar's hands glow with green energy as he charges them before clapping them together and firing a purple and red energy beam. In the Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed, he performs this attack without charging it, and his hands do not glow green. The technique may be a reference to Ultraman's Specium Ray. It is classified as a concussive attack in Godzilla: Save the Earth.

Hand ray / missiles

In Godzilla: Trading Battle, Jet Jaguar can utilize the generic "laser" and "missile" attack cards. These manifest as a blue laser emitted from the palm of his hand and missiles fired from his chest, respectively.

Harpoon Cannon

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar acquired a harpoon cannon from Genzo. This cannon knocked out and later killed Anguirus, each time fired at extremely close range to foil the monster's precognitive shield.

Spear of Anguirus

Main article: Spear of Anguirus.

In Godzilla Singular Point, Jet Jaguar wields a spear with a blade fashioned from one of Anguirus’ horns. This spear managed to stab and cut through Rodans and Kumongas with ease. Jet Jaguar utilized the spear to duel the giant claws of Kamanga and Zenbunga.

Mouth projectile

In the Godzilla, King of the Monsters Game Boy game, Jet Jaguar is able to spit a projectile from his mouth.

Weaknesses

Video games

Godzilla: Trading Battle

In Godzilla: Trading Battle Jet Jaguar can release an "explosion breath" from his mouth.

Godzilla: Save the Earth

Jet Jaguar is a playable character in Godzilla: Save the Earth. In this game, Jet Jaguar can fire energy beams from his arms and spin himself around at extreme speeds, creating a deadly tornado. Jet Jaguar possesses numerous martial arts-inspired melee combat moves, and can change his size to grow much larger or smaller than his opponent. While in his smallest combat form, Jet Jaguar deploys a reflection shield over his body, making him immune to beam attacks, which are reflected back at the opponent.

Godzilla: Unleashed

Jet Jaguar in Godzilla: Unleashed

Height: 90 meters[27]
Weight: 38,000 tons[27]

"Jet Jaguar is a human-sized robot created by a Japanese scientist for unknown reasons. Created with a great potential for learning, Jet Jaguar achieved sentience and began to modify himself and his programming. His most impressive modification has been his ability to change his own size-allowing him to grow large enough to dwarf monsters such as Godzilla. Unfortunately, Jet Jaguar cannot maintain his enormous size indefinitely, and must periodically rest to regain his energies. Jet Jaguar is a reserve member of the Global Defense Force-heroically protecting humanity whenever it is threatened by monstrous threats."

Godzilla (PlayStation 3 / PlayStation 4)

Jet Jaguar in Godzilla

In the PS3 version, Jet Jaguar appears as a boss in Area 12 on Stage 5 if the G-Generators are not destroyed fast enough. He may also appear on other levels as a random boss. He attacks using melee attacks. He has a custom theme, and a cutscene of him shaking Godzilla's hand is played after he is defeated three times.

In the PS4 version, he can be encountered on 3 stages with special conditions. He can also only be encountered the first time as Godzilla. If the player destroys the area to between 50% and 65%, and then destroys the generator, Jet Jaguar will appear. He can appear in:

 • Stage 1 of Area 1
 • Stage 4 of Area 7
 • Stage 5 of Area 16

The destruction level applies for all areas.

Books

Comics

Godzilla vs. Megalon

Godzilla Rivals: Vs. King Ghidorah

When a group of Xiliens breached Dr. Ogilvy Hu's secret underground base, Hu took command of Jet Jaguar and fought the attackers off while the P-1 X took off and made its way to Mars to stop the Xilien invasion of Earth.

Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors - Summer Smash

Trivia

 • "Godzilla and Jet Jaguar: Punch! Punch! Punch!," sung by Masato Shimon, plays at the end of Godzilla vs. Megalon. When the film appeared on Mystery Science Theater 3000, Joel and the 'Bots came up with their own comedic translation of the lyrics.
 • For the West German release of Godzilla vs. Megalon, Jet Jaguar was renamed King Kong. However, there is no connection to the real King Kong beyond his name; contrary to a widespread misconception, he is not said to be a giant ape wearing a robot suit in the dub.
 • The popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion paid homage to Jet Jaguar in the episode "A Human Work," where a robot named Jet Alone appears. It shares a similar color scheme with Jet Jaguar, and references both his name and the name of his original design, Red Alone.
 • Yosuke Nakano's unrealized story submission for the seventh Heisei Godzilla film, titled Godzilla vs. Cyber City, featured a giant robot named after Jet Jaguar called "Genocide Jaguar."[28]
 • According to Shunsuke Fujita, the producer of Godzilla on the PlayStation 3 and 4, he did not originally intend to include Jet Jaguar in the game, but walked into his office, saw him on the screen, and "couldn't say no."[29]
 • Jet Jaguar is referenced in GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse, the official prequel novel to GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters, through a type of battle armor constructed by the United Earth called "Type-38 Mobile Combat Uniform Jaguar Japan Specification," or "Jaguar J" for short.[30]
 • Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #7's original title was "PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH," a reference to "Godzilla and Jet Jaguar: Punch! Punch! Punch!" When the series was reissued through trade paperbacks, the issue's title was changed to "Viva Jet Jaguar."
 • In the 2011 science fiction novel Ready Player One, Jet Jaguar is one of multiple giant robots available for selection after clearing the Black Tiger-themed second gate of Anorak's quest. He is seen alongside the Iron Giant, Leopardon from Toei's Spider-Man, the Shogun Warriors, and Kiryu, who appears later in the book.
 • As an April Fool's joke, Toho uploaded a teaser for a Jet Jaguar film to the official Godzilla YouTube channel in 2019.[31] Though the character has yet to make another film appearance, he soon returned in the web series Godziban and the TV series Godzilla Singular Point.
