The MonsterVerse King Ghidorah (キングギドラ is an incarnation of Kingu Gidora)King Ghidorah that first appeared in a cave painting in the post-credits scene for the 2017 Legendary Pictures film, Kong: Skull Island, and is set to make his debut in the upcoming 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
This will be the first incarnation of King Ghidorah to appear in an American-made film.
Name
King Ghidorah's name is composed of "King" (キング and "Ghidorah." The "Ghidorah" part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" Kingu) (ヒドラ, which is spelled very similarly to the Hidora)Japanese katakana for Ghidorah. Monarch gives King Ghidorah the designation Monster Zero.
Design
This incarnation of King Ghidorah has only been depicted in paintings so far, but retains the classic silhouette of a tall bipedal dragon with three heads on long necks and two large wings at his sides. His heads all have at least two pointed horns, and appear to also possess long manes of hair that run down his necks. His necks are longer and more snake-like that previous incarnations. In a painting showing him locked in battle with Godzilla, King Ghidorah is shown spewing some kind of substance from his mouth, either flames or the character's traditional gravity beams.
Origins
King Ghidorah's origins are currently unknown. Judging by his appearance in ancient cave paintings, he has appeared sometime in the past, and may have clashed with Godzilla. According to the official Monarch timeline, King Ghidorah was discovered buried under ice in Antarctica in 2016 by a Monarch team headed by Vivienne Graham.[1] Monarch links King Ghidorah to mythical creatures such as the Hydra and the Rainbow Serpent, and describes him as a "living extinction event."[2]
