The MonsterVerse King Ghidorah (キングギドラ,   Kingu Gidora) is an incarnation of King Ghidorah that first appeared in a cave painting in the post-credits scene for the 2017 Legendary Pictures film, Kong: Skull Island, and is set to make his debut in the upcoming 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

This will be the first incarnation of King Ghidorah to appear in an American-made film.

Name

King Ghidorah's name is composed of "King" (キング,   Kingu) and "Ghidorah." The "Ghidorah" part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒドラ,   Hidora), which is spelled very similarly to the Japanese katakana for Ghidorah. Monarch gives King Ghidorah the designation Monster Zero.

Design

This incarnation of King Ghidorah has only been depicted in paintings so far, but retains the classic silhouette of a tall bipedal dragon with three heads on long necks and two large wings at his sides. His heads all have at least two pointed horns, and appear to also possess long manes of hair that run down his necks. His necks are longer and more snake-like that previous incarnations. In a painting showing him locked in battle with Godzilla, King Ghidorah is shown spewing some kind of substance from his mouth, either flames or the character's traditional gravity beams. According to MONARCH files injuries have been discovered on several locations on King Ghidorah's body "reminiscent of claw and scorch marks".

Origins

King Ghidorah's origins are currently unknown. Judging by his appearance in ancient cave paintings, he has appeared sometime in the past, and may have clashed with Godzilla. According to the official Monarch timeline, King Ghidorah was discovered buried under ice in Antarctica in 2016 by a Monarch team headed by Vivienne Graham.[1] Monarch links King Ghidorah to mythical creatures such as the Hydra and the Rainbow Serpent, and describes him as a "living extinction event."[2]

Kong: Skull Island

A cave painting of King Ghidorah battling Godzilla in Kong: Skull Island

After their adventure on Skull Island, Monarch members Houston Brooks and Lin San showed James Conrad and Mason Weaver two cave paintings of King Ghidorah, along with paintings depicting Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan, as proof that the inhabitants of Skull Island were not the only monsters in the world. In the second painting, he was shown fighting Godzilla.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

On July 26, 2014, King Ghidorah was confirmed to be appearing in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, along with Mothra and Rodan.[4]

Abilities

Flight

Currently the Monsterverse incarnation of King Ghidorah wingspan is unknown but according to the crimson top secret files "if Monster Zero were to fly again, the stratosphere would be torn open by an otherworldly tempest of thunder and lightning our sky has never seen". It is also described that his wings are incredibly hyper-tensile that any massive aerodynamics could generate hurricane-force winds when flying

Gravity Beams

While not shown until the film comes out, King Ghidorah is shown through cave paintings that he is capable of breathing lightning

Conductor

MONARCH scientists theorize that King Ghidorah's scales act as conductors which are capable of carrying bio-electrical currents through his body

Intelligence

According to cranial scans, King Ghidorah has a divergent frontal lobe like density in all of his heads, showing that each of his heads can have disparate levels of cognitive functions including independent thought
