Hiroshi Komura (小村 完, Komura Hiroshi)[1] also erroneously called Kan Komura[2] and Kan Kobayashi,[3] is a Japanese production designer.
After graduating from Musashino Art University, Komura joined Toho part-time in 1961. Turning down an opportunity to work for NHK through a connection of his father's, Komura moved to Tokyo to continue his work at Toho, becoming a full-time employee within a year. As an art assistant in the Special Art division, Komura worked on various tasks including storyboarding and conceptual drawings, even refining the design of the monster Gabara based on Teizo Toshimitsu's initial sketches. Komura stayed with Toho through its reorganization in 1971, being transferred to Toho's subsidiary company, Toho Bijutsu (presently Toho Eizo Bijutsu).[1] He was given the opportunity to work as a head art director for the 1973 series, Zone Fighter and the 1974 and 1975 films, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and Terror of Mechagodzilla, but returned to an assistant role for the remainder of his tenure at Toho. Komura seemingly retired sometime after 1987, with Daiei's Tokyo Blackout and Toho's Princess from the Moon being his last films.
