The Multiversal Focus is an artifact that first appeared in the 2022 IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios crossover comic series, Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. A powerful gem, the Multiversal Focus allowed the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa to view alternate realities as she sought to find one without Power Rangers, which led her to discover a world occupied by giant monsters such as Godzilla.

Design

Despite being described as a singular gem, the Multiversal Focus appears to actually be three gems bound together by an unknown force; the largest gem resembles a bipyramid, which is accompanied by a small orb floating above it and a long crystal floating below. The three gems appear to be translucent and glow with blue and white energy.

Origins

The origins of the Multiversal Focus are unknown, but Rita Repulsa revealed that it had been guarded by monks in an ancient, hidden temple for thousands of years. It was also known throughout the galaxy, with Rita suggesting it did not originate on Earth and was merely hidden there.

History

Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Having learned the secret location of the Multiversal Focus, the diabolical alien witch Rita Repulsa stormed an ancient temple with her minions and mercilessly slaughtered the monks guarding the artifact. As Rita located the artifact, Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, ambushed the group and battled two of Rita's minions - Goldar and Scorpina - while Rita herself used her magic to unlock the gem's secrets, allowing her to see alternate dimensions within the facets of the Multiversal Focus. Before the Green Ranger could stop her, Rita placed the Multiversal Focus in her Magic Wand and activated it, transporting herself, Goldar, Scorpina, and Finster to a reality in which the Power Rangers did not exist; while trying to grab the gem, the Green Ranger was similarly teleported away.

The Multiversal Focus ultimately transported the group to an alternate Earth already under siege by the Xiliens, prompting Rita and her minions to form a shaky alliance with the invaders from Planet X to help them stop the monster interfering with their plans of global conquest - the one called Godzilla. During this time, Rita also detailed her intention to assemble an unstoppable army of monsters composed of this reality's native monsters as well as her own creations, which she would teleport back to her own reality with the Multiversal Focus before using the gem to explore and conquer other dimensions as well. Despite gaining the upper hand several times by employing her own monsters alongside the Xiliens' kaiju, the tide of battle eventually turned against Rita and the Xiliens thanks to the combined efforts of Godzilla and the Power Rangers. After defeating the Xiliens' ultimate monster, King Ghidorah, Godzilla blasted the Xilien mothership with the full might of his atomic breath; Rita attempted to activate the Multiversal Focus as the vessel was falling out of the sky, only for her Magic Wand to be knocked out of her hands in the subsequent crash, fracturing the Multiversal Focus. With Godzilla closing in on the downed UFO, Rita had no choice but to activate the damaged Multiversal Focus to escape this reality with her minions. However, as a result of the damage sustained, Rita found that she was unable to use the Multiversal Focus to return to her home dimension and instead became lost within the multiverse, floating between dimensions featuring alternate versions of Godzilla or the Power Rangers.

Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II

At some point, Astronema discovered and rescued Rita Repulsa from the multiverse through unknown means. Rita and Astronema were then able to use the fragments of the Multiversal Focus to teleport themselves and an army of monsters to various alternate realities, where they captured alternate versions of Power Ranger teams and stripped them of their powers. The White Ranger from one of these realities was able to steal a fragment of the Multiversal Focus from Rita, though it proved to be highly unstable and teleported the White Ranger to another reality while he was in the midst of battle with Godzilla.

Abilities

Multiversal sight

The Multiversal Focus allows its users to see alternate realities within the facets of its stone.

Multiversal travel

After using her sorcery to unlock the secrets of the Multiversal Focus and combining it with her Magic Wand, Rita Repulsa was able to teleport to an alternate reality she saw within the stone that did not have any Power Rangers. However, it is unknown if the Multiversal Focus has the inherent ability to teleport its users, or if Rita simply combined its power with her staff's preexisting teleportation capabilities.

In Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II, fragments of the Multiversal Focus were shown to be capable of teleporting subjects to alternate realities; however, as a result of the damage and without the aid of Rita’s Magic Wand, its teleportation capabilities happen at random.

Weaknesses

Despite its power, the Multiversal Focus is incredibly fragile, as demonstrated when it shattered into pieces when Rita dropped her Magic Wand.

If damaged, the artifact can have unpredictable effects when used, trapping Rita Repulsa between numerous dimensions at the end of Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In the sequel series, fragments of the Multiversal Focus teleport subjects at random, which results in Godzilla being transported into the Power Rangers' native dimension.
