"The War at Low Tide" (干潮の大決闘,   Kanchō no Daikettō, lit. "Great Duel of the Low Tide") is the 12th episode of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. Written by Taketo Shinkai and Yuki Hirokawa, it aired on Japanese television on June 17, 2023. An English-subtitled version followed on the GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO YouTube channel that June 26.

Plot

Chibi Godzilla, Chibi Mechagodzilla, Chibi Ghidorah, and Chibi Rodan are gathered on a Monster Island beach to dig for clams, which Rodan says is the monsters' favorite pastime. However, before they can begin, they are interrupted by Chibi Hedorah, who is cleaning up trash on the beach. Rodan compliments Hedorah's care for the environment, but passes out when Hedorah forgets who he is. Godzilla then asks Hedorah where all of the trash came from, and Hedorah explains that it washed up after being dumped into the sea by humans "when they still existed."

Hedorah also asserts that most of the humans' trash is indicative of conflict, pointing out a washbowl that he thinks humans used to protect their heads when hitting each other with hammers, a grocery store discount sticker that he believes to be a demonic talisman that riled humans up into fights, and a mechanical pencil that he says would've been used in "intense battles" called entrance exams. Mechagodzilla objects to each of these, explaining that the hitting with hammers is part of a game,[a] that discount stickers just indicate sales, and that entrance exams are not literal battles.

Nonetheless, Ghidorah comments that he dislikes the garbage washing up, and Godzilla agrees. Rodan, having regained consciousness, suggests that they pick up the trash to make the beach "beautiful" like himself, but promptly passes out again when Hedorah opines that he's more accurately "full of garbage." Still, Godzilla enthusiastically embraces the idea of cleaning up, and Ghidorah joins him, though Mechagodzilla reminds them that the credit belongs to Rodan. Hedorah instructs the monsters that the first step in picking up trash is to clean up their own litter. Mechagodzilla doesn't believe that they have any, but Hedorah clarifies that he's talking about Rodan. Mechagodzilla then yells at Hedorah to stop degrading Rodan.

Trivia

  • This episode's Japanese title (干潮の大決闘,   Kanchō no Daikettō) is similar to the latter half of Ebirah, Horror of the Deep's (南海の大決闘,   Nankai no Daikettō).
  • Chibi Hedorah suggests that humans no longer exist, which goes unacknowledged by Chibi Mechagodzilla, the usual voice of reason. Whether or not Hedorah is meant to be telling the truth is thus unclear.

Notes

  1. Tataite kabutte jankenpon is a Japanese variation on rock paper scissors ("janken[pon]") in which the winner of each round can attempt to hit the loser over the head with a toy hammer before they can protect themselves with a 'helmet' (often a bowl).
