This article covers the Godzilla design that that appears in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. For the design introduced in Godzilla (2014), see GareGoji. For the design introduced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, see DougheGoji. For the Godzilla incarnation, see Godzilla (Monsterverse).

The EvoGoji (エヴォゴジ,   Evu~oGoji) is the Godzilla design that was used in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Name

"EvoGoji" (エヴォゴジ,   Evu~oGoji) came into use as an unofficial nickname for the design among Japanese fans. It combines the word "Evolved", from Godzilla's new form in film and Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

Development

The EvoGoji was designed by concept artist Jared Krichevsky. As Godzilla was planned to change throughout the film, Krichevsky was told to make a design "mid tranformation". Krichevsky took inspiration from the Millennium Godzilla’s design for its aggressive and spikey look, and referenced Godzilla Ultima for the veins within the EvoGoji's dorsal plates.[1] Elements of the Monsterverse Mechagodzilla were also useful when designing EvoGoji.[2] This Godzilla design is much slimmer than the Monsterverse's previous takes on the character, which Krichevsky explains as a result of the transformation burning away his extra fat.[3] The EvoGoji did not go through many revisions and everyone working on the film was enthusiastic about Krichevsky's design, although director Adam Wingard suggested adding elbow spikes and Stegosaurus-like thagomizers to the design.[4] The final model differed from Krichevsky's finalized concept art by having smaller arms per Toho's request and a larger head more in line with the previous Monsterverse designs of the character.[5][6] Krichevsky had initially made the EvoGoji's dorsal plates a reddish/magenta, but sometime after he had finished the design, they were made pink,[7] inspired by the Kaio-ken technique from Dragon Ball[8] and due to Adam Wingard’s favorite color being pink.[9] While the word "evolved" was not originally used the describe this design, Krichevsky added it into the description.[10]

Detail

The EvoGoji bears some similarities with the MireGoji, having prominent scales and spiky dorsal plates with a pink coloration. Godzilla has gained additional bulk and muscle in his upper torso and back in comparison to his time in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, though his abdomen is much thinner than before. His skin has a much more spikey and rough texture, with his chin and jawline bearing tiny protrusions and his neck being flaky. His head and arms are larger than before, the latter being visibly elongated and muscular as well as now sporting elbow spikes similar in shape to his dorsal plates. The webbing between his fingers is more noticeable and his legs are slimmer. Most prominently, Godzilla’s dorsal plates now curve backward and have a fleshy texture with visible veins, and his tail sports a thagomizer of plates. They glow a shade of magenta and are a blend of pink and orange when Godzilla isn’t charging his atomic energy. Two rows of pointed protrusions go along the sides of his neck and upper face before stopping at the front ends of his brow ridges. Godzilla is also seen glowing a bright magenta all over his entire body when using his atomic breath.

As Suko set off the trap from above, One-Eye grabbed his compatriot, Knob, and used him as a shield to survive the rockslide.

Weaknesses

One-Eye repeatedly lost to Kong despite having superior numbers every time. Suko distracted One-Eye by pelting him with boulders, resulting in the elder ape blindly focusing on Suko. One-Eye ultimately fell to his death after Suko kicked him off a giant crystal.

Boots accepted and returned to his feet, only to cower in fear as a guard returned and yelled in Kong's face. After the Skar King leaped down from his throne, Boots was among the last to kneel down and bow. Boots was seen spectating the fight between the Skar King and Kong.

History

Knob was one of the Great Apes who chased Kong across the Hollow Earth. He, One-Eye, and three other apes cornered Kong in a ravine, which the latter had lured them to to kill them with a rockslide trap. One-Eye noticed the tripwire and motioned for his compatriots to stop, and they stepped over it. However, Suko set off the trap from above, and right before the rocks hit, One-Eye grabbed Knob and used him as a meat shield so the he would survive.

Abilities

Durability

Knob's body was able to withstand Suko's rockslide unharmed enough for One-Eye to survive beneath his corpse.

Intelligence

Although One-Eye's thoughts in the film's novelization do not portray Knob as very intelligent, Knob was smart enough to bring and use a spear. One-Eye had to stop Knob from setting off the tripwire to Kong's rockslide trap.

Weaknesses

One-Eye managed to lift Knob and used him as a shield against Suko's rockslide, leading to the latter ape's demise. One-Eye attributed this to him being "faster and smarter" than Knob was.
