Cloverfield and the original Godzilla both use giant monsters to evoke then-recent attacks that had profound effects on their countries of origin (9/11 and Allied bombings during World War II). The Abrams quote is useful in confirming that the filmmakers had Godzilla on their minds, but this parallel is much more significant.
I'm willing to listen to whatever the director said, but I'm extremely skeptical. Based on the film alone, Garuda has a much weaker case than anything else we've let in under this rule.
