I can't imagine "Great Ape" as being the actual name for that species, just an umbrella term to refer to them, since they're, well, great apes. It's not like Ilene could have instantly known their proper name, or that the Iwi are suited to give animals common names (like, they called Godzilla "'Zo-zla-halawa'".
