This story begins in the faraway Pacific, on a tiny island atoll miles away from inhabited land and used for testing the atomic and hydrogen bomb. Inside an unimposing-looking shelter, such as this, is housed the mightiest weapon of destruction known to man. Strategy teams, composed of the finest military and scientific minds, are finalizing their plans for Mission: Gigantic, the explosion of this new 20th century weapon. The most complicated and sensitive instruments yet devised are brought into play for this all-important mission.
And now on a battleship in the remote Pacific, from which all shipping has been banned, the moment of command approaches. The seconds are running out.
„

— Post-opening credits narration

And there you see it, the explosion of the mighty hydrogen bomb. Buildings disintegrate. Concrete is reduced to powder. Steel vaporizes. Solids turn liquid and liquids change into gas. Destruction is total and complete.
And then, the downward shockwave, like some gigantic and murderous hammer, pulverizing all that remains. The shock is recorded ten thousand miles away, as the angry mushroom cloud advances toward the stratosphere.
On a another portion of the globe, the Air Force is engaged in the testing of a second bomb, even mightier than the Navy testing bomb. The bomb bay doors are open. The bomb is in position. Target: a clustered semicircle of modern battleships. If all calculations are correct, in less than two minutes, there will be no ships at all below. Nothing but boiling sea and the sullen, fire filled sky.
„

— Post-opening credits narration

On target! The kill is complete. But what have these tests done to Mother Earth? Can the human race continue to deliver these staggering blows without arousing somewhere in the depths of Earth a reaction, a counter attack, a horror still undreamed of? There are persons in the Japanese islands who believe that the horror has already been seen.
What is the aftermath? This is the story of such an aftermath.
„

— Post-opening credits narration

After studying all of the relevant data, I can now state that the unidentified flying object is a giant flying reptile, closely related to the extinct Pteranodon. So far, here are the data we have gathered for you:
Its weight is over 100 tons and it has a wingspread of perhaps 500 feet. Because of its size and supersonic flight, it generates a shockwave with all the destructive force of a typhoon. Just one thing more: Although related to the Pteranodon, the creature is a carnivorous reptile and belongs to a species called Rodan.

That's Cathra, one of our film school interns, now trapped and menaced unaware by a living mummy, all for your entertainment here on AMC's Monsterfest.
Coming up: In 1956, director Ishiro Honda took a break from Godzilla to try his hand at another monster, this one from the skies. It's name in Japanese was Radon, but the American distributors were afraid that name would be confused with "Radon", a then-popular brand of soap powder. So, they swapped the vowels and released it as the great Rodan.

The voice of Kenji Sahara was provided by the Asian-American actor, Keye Luke, but if you listen carefully, you may recognize another voice, George Takei, of Star Trek infamy-I mean fame, also lent his vocal talents to Rodan. Welcome to AMC EFX. I'm Stan Winston.
In 1956, Toho Studios, who made Godzilla, decided to raise the ante in monster movies with Rodan.
This was Toho's first monster movie shot in color and this monster was going to be able to do something Godzilla couldn't: fly.
To bring Rodan to life, Toho hired Haruo Nakajima to play the part. He was one of the men who had played Godzilla, so he seemed like the perfect choice.
To simulate flying, the actor was hoisted high above the set on a pulley and cable system. Clever camera angles hid the wires, most of the time.
One day, during filming a flying sequence, the cable holding Nakajima snapped and he fell twenty five feet onto the set below.
Luckily, Rodan had been flying over a simulated river at the time and the eighteen-inch-deep pool broke the fall.
Unfortunately, he drowned. Just kidding.
Now, sit back and enjoy Rodan.

Video Release Descriptions

The original creature feature!
This is the original thriller that has delighted monster movie fans for years, starring the legendary RODAN, disturbed from his prehistoric slumber to wreak havoc on civilization.
When the tale begins, H-bomb tests in the Pacific have led to strange events. First, coal miners are attacked by a huge caterpillar. The monster is destroyed, but its eggs are buried deep in the mine. Then, a nearby volcano erupts, releasing the spawn it has nurtured for years beyond count: RODAN, a voraciously hungry prehistoric bird, weighing over 100 tons with a 270-foot wing span. Modern weaponry is useless against Rodan, as he unleashes his wrath on the Japanese Islands. To add to the terror, another Rodan hatches and joins in on the destruction.
The thrilling climax pits the Rodan monsters against the seething volcano that bred them, as society wonders what other horrors their bomb tests have awakened.
A classic thriller!
