First appearance Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The Whipslash is a Titan-sized weapon used by the Skar King that appears in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It is a whip made from a Warbat's spine[2] with a crystal attached to it that enabled the Skar King to control Shimo with pain.

Name

"Whipslash" is a combination of the words "whip", "whiplash" (a neck injury cause by forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck), and "slash", referring to the sharp protrusions on the weapon. Though unnamed on-screen, its name was revealed in a Playmates box set for the Skar King.[3]

Development

The Whipslash was inspired by a scene in the 1973 film Emperor of the North Pole, where the characters A-No.-1 and Shack respectively fight with a fire axe and chains.[4] Visual effects supervisor, characterized the animation of the Whipslash in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as one of the most challenging hurdles for his team during the film's production; with its design consisting of over 100 moving components, automating its motion proved to be quite difficult.[5]

Design

The Whipslash is made from the spine of a Warbat,[2] and has a glowing, light blue crystal attached to it with. The handle appears to be composed of a mandible, likely from the skeleton of the Warbat composing the whip. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire visual effects supervisor Kevin Smith characterized the animation of the Whipslash as one of the most daunting tasks for his team in the film; with more than 100 moving parts, automating its motion proved to be quite challenging.[6]

History

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The Skar King with the Whipslash.

After the Skar King kicked the Great Ape Gnarled Finger into a lake of molten lava, the enraged Kong challenged the Red-Haired Conqueror. The Skar King proved to be an agile adversary, wielding his Whipslash far greater range than Kong's battle axe. Using it, he disarmed Kong and attempted to choke him. However, Kong fought back, flipping the Skar King over his shoulder, sending him crashing to the ground. The Skar King summoned Shimo and forced her to attack Kong with the blue crystal affixed to his Whipslash, compelling her to overcome her hesitation by inflicting pain on her using the crystal.

Later on, the Skar King used the Whipslash against Kong, which he blocked using the B.E.A.S.T. Glove. In Rio de Janerio, the Skar King lassoed a building at Kong with the Whipslash, which Kong destroyed. While confronting Godzilla, the Skar King dodged a blast of his atomic breath and swung the Whipslash at Godzilla, who caught it with his jaws threw him, and bit off the tip, sending the crystal clattering to the ground. As Kong and the Skar King fought to obtain the crystal, Suko arrived and destroyed it using Kong's axe, creating a shockwave that sent all five Titans away.

Abilities

Dexterity

The Whipslash is a highly dexterous tool in combat. It possesses exceptional sharpness, capable of slicing through buildings and even cutting Kong's hand, yet it failed to penetrate the evolved Godzilla's skin and the B.E.A.S.T. Glove. The Whipslash can wrap around objects, as demonstrated during the Skar King's initial skirmish with Kong, where the whip wrapped around and cut Kong's hand, as well as in Rio de Janeiro, where the Skar King lassoed a building.

Ilene Andrews (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire)

A blue glowing crystal is attached to the Whipslash's end, which allowed the Skar King to control Shimo and cause her pain should she attempt to resist his commands. The novelization of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire suggests that this crystal was broken off from Shimo's back spines.[7]

Trivia

  • The Whipslash accessories included with the Giant and 6" Skar King figures by Playmates lack the crystal present on the final design, instead having a handle in its place. The figures' accessories are also designed to be held by the handle, rather than the Warbat jaw like in the film itself.
