Bernie Hayes (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire)

Suko (スコ,   Suko) is a juvenile ape Titan[4] who appears in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Having grown up under the Skar King's brutal rule, Suko lured Kong into a trap set by other Great Apes when he entered their Hollow Earth realm. Kong defeated his attackers and forced Suko to bring him to the Skar King's kingdom. Despite his initial hostility toward Kong, he gradually formed a bond with him and helped him escape from an attack by Shimo. He then fought alongside Kong, Godzilla, and Mothra against the Skar King's army, playing a vital role in their victory by shattering the control shard used to enslave Shimo. He then returned to the apes' kingdom with Kong now his adoptive father and Shimo by their side.

Name

Suko's name is likely derived from musuko (息子), the Japanese word for "son." The name was first revealed on the packaging of Playmates' Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire toys.[7] "Suko" goes unspoken in the film, with Bernie Hayes only referring to him as a "mini Kong" at one point. AMC Theatres' closed captioning for the film also uses the "mini Kong" name for its sound effect descriptions. Director Adam Wingard offered the nickname Baby Kong during interviews for IGN Fan Fest 2024 and for CBR, apparently misquoting Bernie's line.[1][2]

Design

Suko is a bipedal primate similar to Kong, but with orange fur not unlike that of the Skar King. He has green irises and a scar over his right eye.

Personality

Suko is initially loyal to the Skar King's empire, distracting Kong so that a trio of adult Great Apes could flank him and enticing a Drownviper to attack him. After Kong killed the Drownviper and offered some of its meat to Suko, however, the two became closer. Suko's loyalties were tested after he led Kong to the Skar King's lair. After watching Kong help an ape being abused by the guard and the Skar King kill his friend Gnarled Finger for trying to protect him, he made his choice. He helped Kong, overwhelmed by the enslaved Titan Shimo, escape the lair, then fought alongside him against the Skar King and his army.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Suko was a young member of the Great Apes who lived in the Hollow Earth's "Subterranean Realm" under the vicious rule of the Skar King. He first encountered Kong on a misty plain, the mist creating the optical illusion that Suko was much larger than Kong until he stepped into view. Kong calmed upon seeing him and offered the child his hand, but Suko bit his finger and ran off. Kong pursued him until he was ambushed by three other apes who had accompanied Suko. Suko attacked Kong alongside them, scratched at his face, but after Kong grabbed him and used as a flail against his comrades, throwing him at his third target, he hid instead. Kong killed two of the apes, with the third, One-Eye, fleeing. Kong quickly discovered Suko in his hiding place and demanded that he show him where he and the others came from.

Suko brought Kong to a massive lake. Smelling a Drownviper in the lake, he jumped in and splashed around; when Kong followed, the serpent attacked him. Suko fled as they fought, but Kong threw his axe in front of him and tripped him, followed by the serpent's head. Kong quickly caught up to the young ape, dragging the beheaded corpse of the eel-like monster with him. Later, as Kong sat eating the Drownviper, Suko indicated that he was hungry, but refused to eat near Kong. Kong tore a piece off of the section he was currently eating and threw it aside for Suko, who mimicked Kong's lounging pose as he ate.

Soon the two arrived at the Skar King's lair, where Suko tried to blend in as Kong challenged a guard who was beating another ape. This drew out the Skar King, who mocked Kong and menaced Suko. Gnarled Finger, an old ape who had been relieved to see the young Titan return, stood between him and the Skar King, and for this was kicked into a pool of magma by the tyrant. Suko cried out in horror, but tried to appear inconspicuous as Kong battled the Skar King, and later the enslaved ice Titan Shimo. Seeing that Kong was no match for her frost breath, Suko directed him to an exit, although he was pursued by many of Skar King's subjects. Kong lured them into one of his hunting traps, but the other apes were too smart to trigger its tripwire, leaving the injured Kong in peril. Suko, from atop the ravine, pushed the trap into motion, raining boulders down onto the menacing apes and killing all but one. Kong then led Suko to a hidden Iwi civilization where his human friend Jia was responding to a distress call. After Kong collapsed from the frostbite inflicted by Shimo, Suko panicked and ran off, where he discovered that the Skar King, Shimo, and a posse of apes were on the move. Suko returned to Kong, who Monarch had equipped with the B.E.A.S.T. Glove, and the older ape returned to the surface to lure Godzilla to Hollow Earth to help fight the Skar King and Shimo.

Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra faced off against the Skar King, Shimo, and the Skar King's henchmen in a gravitational triggered by the Iwi. When an ape attacked Kong from behind, Suko joined the fray, pelting him and another ape with boulders. One-Eye attempted to strangle Suko as gravity returned to normal, dropping both apes onto a massive crystal and loosening his grip. Suko kicked One-Eye in the face, dropping him to his demise.

After Kong, the Skar King, Godzilla, and Shimo, all fell into a portal to Rio de Janeiro, Suko launched himself at Kong's axe, which had been left behind. He dislodged it from the rock face before traveling to the surface world. He swung the axe to shatter the crystal on the Skar King's Whipslash after Godzilla had broken it off, severing his control over Shimo. The Skar King picked up Suko by the throat, but failed to notice the approach of Kong, who punched him in the face, freeing Suko.

After Shimo froze the Skar King and Kong shattered him, Suko and Kong rode on Shimo's back down to the lair where the Skar King had once reigned, with Kong declaring himself the Great Apes' new ruler.

Trivia

  • Although he appears to be younger than Kong in Kong: Skull Island, Suko is at least 45 feet taller than Kong was in that movie.
  • Suko is the third juvenile ape to appear in a King Kong film, after Kiko in Son of Kong and Baby Kong in King Kong Lives. Though all of these characters are sons of Kong, Suko is the only one with no apparent biological relation to him.
  • It is possible that the Skar King is Suko's biological father. Infant apes with reddish fur like Suko's can be seen in the arms of female apes in the Skar King's throne room, implying that he reproduced with these females.
    • The film's novelization expounds upon this, stating that the Skar King keeps all of the females in the civilization for himself, in something of a harem.
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's initial rumored title was Son of Kong, referencing Suko.
  • A product description for Playmates' Suko with Titanus Doug Figure Set calls Doug Suko's ally, although they never interact in the film.[3]
