— Narrator (Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex)

Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is a reptilian kaiju who first appeared in Takuya Uenishi's 2022 short film Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, and later appeared in the 2023 sequel short Godzilla vs. Megalon. He thwarted an alien invasion of Earth and bested their leader, Gigan Rex, in combat. Although left in an exhausted state, he later defended the surface world once again, this time against the Seatopian god monster Megalon.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira) and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Japanese fans have nicknamed this Godzilla RekuGoji (レクゴジ), a portmanteau of Rekusu (レクス, "Rex") from Gigan Rex and Godzilla's Japanese name Gojira (ゴジラ).[3]

Design

Godzilla's design closely resembles the design from Takuya Uenishi's fan film G vs. G, which in turn resembles the character's Heisei incarnation, with much more noticeable and lumpy scarring on his skin. He possesses the traditional charcoal grey hide and bone-white dorsal plates, as well as being very muscular and bulky. The dorsal plates are much like traditional Toho designs, being shorter and maple leaf shaped, with charcoal grey coloration in the middle of each plate. They are arranged in five rows of scutes starting together at the top of his head, then forming plates on his back before shortening into scutes again and traveling to the tip of his tail. His tail ends in a rounded stump-like shape and he features short ears, as well as orange irises and black sclera. He has trunk-like legs and feet that closely resemble the Heisei designs from 1989 onwards, with four bone-white claws and flat-planted feet. Godzilla has two rows of yellowish teeth that point straight, and sports the traditional fangs on both sides of his mouth near the front. When firing his atomic breath, Godzilla's dorsal plates all begin to glow bright blue, the light starting at the same time while traveling up each plate, and remain glowing as he fires the beam. While in his white-hot state, the areas in which Godzilla glows bright white closely resemble the bright orange markings of Burning Godzilla. His sclera is black, akin to FinalGoji.

Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex

Godzilla's white atomic breath clashing with Gigan Rex's chest laser in Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex

As Gigan Miles destroyed a city, Godzilla engaged one of them, making his presence known by hurling the dead and battered Gigan Miles at the feet of its allies, before roaring a challenge at the invaders. One of the three Gigan Miles leaped towards Godzilla, slamming its bladed forearms into his side. The cyborg tried to stab Godzilla with its tail spike but was thwarted as Godzilla grabbed its tail, throwing it to the ground and crushing its head beneath his foot. Another Gigan Miles leaped into battle, attempting to slash at him with its blades, but was evaded by Godzilla's quick reflexes, slicing a building in half instead. Godzilla attempted to swipe at the Gigan but it blocked, drawing his attention as another Gigan Miles ambushed him from behind, jumping onto his back and pinning him while activating its buzzsaw. As Godzilla was pinned, the other Gigan Miles fired several lasers at him, before Godzilla blasted the Gigan Miles off his back with a nuclear pulse and sent it flying. Godzilla then obliterated the other Gigan Miles with a blast of atomic breath. Suddenly, Gigan Rex smashed down into the ground behind Godzilla. The monster turned to face his opponent as Gigan Rex extended his Rex Blades, whipping Godzilla with them before opening his chest, revealing his chest aperture, and firing a massive laser, knocking Godzilla to the ground. Godzilla fired a blast of atomic breath in retaliation, but Gigan Rex leaped into the air, hovering as he used his Rex Blades to slice through several buildings, but Godzilla caught them, yanking Gigan Rex to the ground. Gigan Rex attempted to stabilize himself using his splitting tail but was interrupted by a Godzilla, who slammed his tail into the red cyborg. As Godzilla fired his atomic breath, Gigan Rex used his blades to block the blast, but Godzilla slowly advanced on him, still firing a beam of energy. Gigan Rex used his forehead aperture to call in nine more Gigan Miles, who interrupted Godzilla's assault with multiple lasers. Gigan Rex commanded the Gigan Miles to extend their buzzsaws, retracting their golden-scaled torsos into their bodies and revealing complex mechanisms centered around a glowing core that extended and widened their buzzsaws. The Gigan Miles began to dive down and slash Godzilla with their buzzsaws, with Godzilla attempting to blast one out of the sky with his atomic breath, only to for it to glance off the larger buzzsaw. As this was happening other Gigan Miles and Gigan Rex repeatedly utilized their lasers against Godzilla, with four of them piling on top of Godzilla and shredding at his skin.

Godzilla began to glow a bright white, before using a powerful version of his nuclear pulse to kill three of them and knock one away. As the Gigan Miles attempted to fly back towards Godzilla, the monster, now glowing white, completely vaporized the cyborg with a single blast of white-hot atomic breath, going straight through it and devastating the surrounding city. Gigan Rex, seeing this new and immense power, telekinetically ripped the cores from the remaining six Gigan Miles, shredding them in the process, and connected the cores to his Rex Blades, which he had extended around himself. As Godzilla turned toward the now powered-up Gigan Rex levitating above him, the red cyborg fired a far more powerful, crimson chest laser at the King of the Monsters, with Godzilla returning fire and entering a Beam-Fight. Initially, Gigan Rex overtook Godzilla's white-hot beam, but Godzilla focused more energy into his atomic breath until his beam overtook Gigan Rex's, blasting off the cyborg's limbs and sending him crashing to the ground. Godzilla, now triumphant, let out several roars in victory.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (2023)

As civilians rode a train through the city, planes flew overhead and smoke and fire was seen in the distance, and a blast of atomic breath shot over the tops of the buildings, speculated to be searching for Gigan Miles remains to destroy that were stashed away in a military base. Tanks traveled down the streets towards the battle while Godzilla appeared from behind the buildings, and opened fire as a soldier described the beast's exhaustion and lessened energy.

Later on in the night, Godzilla continued his march though the cityscape, with citizens walking towards him. Fighter jets flew overhead and fired, causing the people to panic while Megalon appeared from the sky, firing more napalm bullets at the tanks on the ground. Godzilla looked up towards his foe as Megalon launched a volley of Geothermal Napalm at Godzilla, and Megalon reached out one of his drill arms, slamming into the ground and flattening a large portion of the city in a huge shockwave. As the dust cleared, Megalon pulled his drill arm from the ground and the two monsters faced off, roaring at eachother. Godzilla attempted to it Megalon with his tail but was too slow, and the insect monster leaped into the air and hovered. Godzilla fired his atomic breath upwards but his opponent dodged that as well, and Megalon retaliated with his Beast Killer Light Ray, electrocuting Godzilla. He then flew down and smashed a drill arm into the King of the Monsters, knocking Godzilla backwards before electrocuting him again with the ray. Godzilla disrupted the beam with a short nuclear pulse and began charging energy, transferring it to his arm as Megalon rushed towards him. When the flying monster reached him, Godzilla punched him in the face, resulting a large explosion that knocked Megalon to the ground.

The two engaged in melee combat, with Godzilla hitting Megalon with charged slaps while Megalon shielded with his drill arms. Megalon attempted to hit his foe with a drill but Godzilla shot him with a short blast of atomic breath, but Megalon counterattacked with a barrage of napalm bullets, knocking Godzilla onto his back. Megalon jumped up and flew towards him, but Godzilla used his nuclear pulse to blast himself off the ground and into a flying dropkick, slamming into Megalon and knocking him to the ground. As Megalon was staggered, Godzilla reached him and grabbed his horn, with Megalon struggling to release his grasp by discharging the Beast Killer electricity from his horn and stabbing his drill arms into the reptilian. However, Godzilla charged his energy into his hand again and shoved it upwards, uppercutting Megalon with a burst of energy and breaking off his horn. Megalon was sent flying backwards into some buildings, and fell to the ground as Godzilla's arm glowed orange with burn scars. The Seatopian stood in front of Megalon's face and held the engraved stone up once more and her whole body glowed, and disappeared in a small flash of light. Megalon suddenly rose to his feet, roaring. He spread his wings and put his drills together, interlocking and combining them into a single, large spinning mechanism and flew into Godzilla, drilling into Godzilla's flesh and propelling him through the city. As Megalon roared, Godzilla entered his glowing white, special state, and shot a single blast of his white atomic breath, vaporizing a large swath of the city and cleaving Megalon in half. The insect monster's top half drifted on his wings before coming to a halt, his eyes dimming. Godzilla, now badly scorched, roared in victory before collapsing to the ground.

Sometime later, Godzilla's eyes opened and he awoke.

Abilities

Physical capabilities

Godzilla destroyed and threw around the Gigan Miles with little effort, whilst also easily knocking Gigan Rex to the ground in a single tail swipe, as well as yanking him to the ground when catching his Rex Blades. He displayed surprising reflexes, being able to dodge the smaller Gigan Miles' quick attacks and deflecting Gigan Rex’s blades. In his fight with Megalon, Godzilla proves capable of catching the insectoid monster off-guard with some of his attacks. He utilized his nuclear pulse to blast himself off of the ground into a flying dropkick that knocked Megalon out of the sky. When channeling atomic energy into his arms and hands, Godzilla proved to be comparable if not superior to Megalon in terms of strength. He neutralized a powerful blow from Megalon with his own, creating two shockwaves that separated them. Godzilla was strong enough to tear off Megalon’s horn with his bare hands without visible struggle.

Atomic breath

Godzilla firing his atomic breath

Godzilla sports the traditional blue beam of focused radiation. However, this version is extremely powerful, causing large explosions when making contact with objects and obliterating Gigan Miles with a single blast. It has great range, as it covers multiple city blocks whenever Godzilla uses it. While battling Megalon at close range, Godzilla let out a quick burst of the beam from his mouth.

Nuclear pulse

Godzilla discharging a nuclear pulse

Godzilla possesses a short-range nuclear pulse that he can discharge from his dorsal plates. It blasted apart a Gigan Miles who was in direct contact with Godzilla's plates, and had enough power to send Godzilla into a flying dropkick with enough speed and momentum to knock Megalon out of the sky. He also utilized it to disrupt the insect monster's horn beam.

Energy transferal

Godzilla transferring energy into his arm

As shown in Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla can transfer energy into his fists and claws. This enhanced his physical attacks, allowing him to send Megalon flying with a single punch.

Special state

Godzilla entering his white "special state"

When Godzilla becomes overwhelmed, he can transition into a "special state" in which he gains massive amounts of power and glows bright white in a pattern similar to Heisei Godzilla's Burning form. This state strengthens his atomic weaponry greatly, as shown when a single nuclear pulse vaporized three Gigan Miles, or when he fired a powerful beam that vaporized another Gigan Miles instantly, passing straight through it and devastating a massive portion of the surrounding city. He was also able to overcome Gigan Rex's crimson chest beam in this form. The atomic breath in this state was also able to cleave Megalon in half, an opponent who was able to withstand multiple blasts of the regular atomic breath.

Intelligence

A skilled combatant, Godzilla is shown making efficient attacks and counterattacks against his opponents. In addition, Godzilla is never stymied for long by a new ability his opponent demonstrates. After enduring several strikes from Gigan Rex's Rex Blades, he caught them before they could be withdrawn and pulled them to slam the cyborg into the ground. When attacked from behind by one or multiple Gigan Miles, he employed his nuclear pulse to repel them. After his weakened atomic breath failed to reach the flying Megalon, he compensated by channeling his remaining nuclear energy into his hands, a nuclear pulse that launched him into the air, and a short-range burst of atomic breath.

Durability

Godzilla's flesh being scorched by prolonged contact with Megalon's horn

Godzilla is extremely durable. His thick hide was unable to be pierced by the Gigan Miles' bladed forearms, lasers, buzzsaws, or extended buzzsaws, even for an extended period of time. Godzilla was also able to withstand both Gigan Rex's chest laser and Rex Blades, as well as the explosion which ensued from he and Gigan Rex's Beam-Fight.

He continues to display great durability against Megalon in spite of being exhausted from his previous fight. Despite being drilled, electrocuted, and occasionally sent flying by Megalon's attacks, Godzilla survived the battle with only burns to his hand and arm (from enduring Megalon's electricity at close range while breaking off his horn), and to his chest (from Megalon's final drill attack).

Weaknesses

Godzilla was able to be knocked to the ground by Gigan Rex's chest beam and Megalon's mouth projectiles, and staggered by Megalon's horn laser. Moreover, Megalon's combined drills scorched Godzilla's torso where they made contact, a wound which remained even after Godzilla shifted into his special state. Godzilla was also shown to suffer from exhaustion, being left with only 30% of his radioactive energy after his battle with the Gigans, which caused him to move and attack slower than he previously had. After finally defeating Megalon, Godzilla collapsed to his knees before face-planting, unconscious.

Trivia

  • This Godzilla is implied, though not confirmed, to be the adult Godzilla Junior from the Heisei era. The opening shot of Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex echoes the final shot of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, with a voiceover by Miki Saegusa actress Megumi Odaka explaining that Godzilla last appeared a quarter of a century ago, the approximate time between the release of the two films.
  • This incarnation's design originated in G vs. G (2019), a short fan film directed by Takuya Uenishi and submitted to the GEMSTONE Godzilla contest. Uenishi also designed and modeled an extremely similar Godzilla for Shinkalion the Movie (2019) prior to directing Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex.
  • The flying kick performed by Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Megalon references a similar move famously performed by the Showa incarnation in the 1973 film.
  • This Godzilla is the only Japanese incarnation of the character to possess five fingers.
