I want to watch more of the Godzilla films that lean into the horror side. The main example I have is the original Gojira(1954). Which ones would you say lean more toward that kind of horror vibe?

Thanks for helping!

Not many fall under 'horror' but Shin Godzilla falls under it, it's a great film. GMK (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant monsters all out attack) has horror scenes, but not the whole film could be seen as horror. If you just want horror kaiju films, but not just Godzilla, I'd say the Cloverfield films.

The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and Godzilla vs. Megaguirus all have elements of horror (the latter two with the Juvenile Destoroyahs and Meganulon, respectively).

I’d also add Godzilla vs Hedorah. While there is a lot of funny scenes, Hedorah certainly gave it a horror aspect, especially the flying scene where he massacres the people, along with some of his nighttime appearances.

well this isn't a godzilla flim, but its a toho kaiju flim, War of the gargantuas could qualify as a "horror flim" the Airport Scene was pretty scary, and the night brawl scene was pretty scary to me atleast.

Thank you all for these recommendations!

I watched Shin Godzilla and it has immediately become one of my favorite movies of all time. What a ride!

I've seen the Cloverfield films already which I do love.

I also had Godzilla vs Biollante recommended so I watched that one which was definitely interesting but the story lagged a bit for me. Nonetheless the fight sequences were superb.

Still have to get to the rest of my new list: --GMK --The Return of Godzilla --Godzilla vs Destroyah --Godzilla vs Megaguirus --Godzilla vs Hedorah --War of the Gargantuas

I'm excited. Honestly, Shin Godzilla was the perfect execution of what I was looking for but I'm still excited to look at more of the older films!

Hum, horror film? Never really put any Godzilla in the horror category. I've always thought of horror films as more an evil paranormal entity with slasher elements, like Freddy or Jason.

Now "horrible" films is a differt mater. (lol). Examples being Son of Godzilla and yes, Shin Godzilla certainly qualifies. Simply the worst Godzilla movie ever, IMHO, and I know others think the same about it. Perhaps this is why Toho has yet to follow it up. PS: Yes, a copy of SG is in my library; needed to have a copy for a complete collection.

Hmmm, in my case, maybe Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (the flying part really scared me), Return of Godzilla (Partially), Godzilla 2014. That’s all the Godzilla films, but if you’re really scared of nukes like me, then The Last War is definitely one you should see.

And I did not mean for that to rhyme.
