The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island is a companion book to King Kong (2005) written by Weta Workshop with forward by Peter Jackson. With a length of 224 pages, The World of Kong serves as both an art book and a companion book to the 2005 film, expanding upon Skull Island's inhabitants, geography, and island's fate after the film.

Development

Conceived midway through the design process of Peter Jackson's King Kong,[1] Weta the idea for the book was to showcase some of the thought and world design of Weta Workshop's work on the film in a different way from the usual "Making of..." and "Art of..." tie-in books.[2] The team began to focus on creating the book once their design work on King Kong was finished.[1] Collecting all the artwork and ideas done for the film to build the bestiary, Weta realized quickly that the artwork, while fine for an "Art of..." book, needed to be readdressed in the context of a natural history book, so Weta reworked back into those drawings to finish them more fully as well as put them in an appropriate habitat or behavioral context. In some cases, designs were changed to better suit the workshop's creations for the book, so that two similar designs for a single creature could be related species or an example of convergent evoultion.[2]

Content

Introduction

The introduction starts with the reveal that after King Kong's demise and the unveiling of Skull Island, universities and private organizations around the world made more expeditions to the island, but only a handful made it to Skull Island with half being unprepared for what awaited them. Eventually, a properly prepared expedition team lead by Carl Denham named Project Legacy is organized. The expedition lasts for three months in 1935, but the team finds that Skull Island was too strange and dangerous to study in a short space of time, leading the expedition to be expanded to long-term study and even establishing a base of operations on the island itself.

I. The Crumbling Coast and Village

This chapter discusses the fauna of the coast, such as the carnivores Tartarusaurus and Nefundusaurus, and the Skull Islanders seen in the film and their ritual sacrifices to Kong.
