"Bunko Ramen" (ブンコラーメン Bunko Rāmen) is the fifth episode of Human Vapor. It was released with the rest of the series on Netflix on July 2, 2026.
Plot
1999: Outside White Center, a pair of staff members lounge and eat food as laborers queue up to be washed down with hoses. Two of them shove food into their mouths and run away, but are caught and beaten to the ground. Inside, more workers slave away washing the others' uniforms, among them two children: Satsuki and Kono. Satsuki asks Kono if she saw the shooting star the other day and says she wished on it to become rich. A staff member notices her talking and threatens her with violence for slacking. Later, staff gather outside the building to announce they are looking for extra help on a cleanup job, with an offer of five times the pay. Satsuki is chosen as one of the volunteers and excitedly tells Kono that her wish is coming true.
Kono awakens one night and sneaks outside. She comes upon Obata and Mori arguing beside a truck and opens the back canopy to see piles of charred corpses. She climbs inside and finds Satsuki's body, which she tries awakening to no avail. The truck sets off with her aboard and reaches Tokyo. When Mori gets out to harass people walking in the street, Kono slips away and begins wandering the city. She's eventually drawn to Bunko Ramen in Katsushika and claws at the display food in the window. She runs off when a patron, Ren Tsutsumida, notices her peering inside. Though she stops a moment when he asks if she's hungry, she is sent running again when the shop owner suggests they call the police. Tsutsumida promises her they won't and convinces her to eat inside. While they dine on noodles, the host on the radio reads out a submission from Tsutsumida for "Ellie My Love". Kono finally speaks her first words to him, telling him her name. She notices a dead goldfish in the shop's fish tank and is reminded of Satsuki. An oblivious Tsutsumida pretends to be the radio host and holds out a spoon like a microphone for her to make a wish; the girl bursts into tears.
2026: Kono asks that Fujita and Kaho let her explain herself. At the Nishiazabu Police Station, the TMPD looks over the clues left by the Human Vapor and concludes the police badge he planted at the Fujishiro Syndicate indicates his next target will be one of their own. Sergeant Abe delivers a new piece of evidence, Saburo Otomo's cellphone, a video on which she says was deleted after his death. Chief Inspector Yoshida immediately accuses Kono. Back at the Vapor's lair, Kono presents the Fujikawas with a printout of Obata's journal. She points out that it does not reveal who ordered the meteorite cleanup and that, although it enumerates the members of Mufu, one of them named Kai she has no leads on. She then offers that if the siblings keep quiet until after she has completed her revenge against Mufu, she will pay them double, let them exclusively report on the journal, and turn herself in to the police. Uncomfortable with her murderous ways, Kaho vows to expose her the next time she kills.
In a taxicab, Kono types up a hit on Superintendent General Sakamoto to fax to the Vapor over a phone app. Just before she can send it, she arrives at a building with Inspector Okamoto waiting outside. She admits to stealing the journal video but shows him Sakamoto's name contained in its pages. Believing the TMPD to be compromised from the inside, she persuades him to keep the journal away from them.
