This is something I have thought of for a while, but it kind of has come to light due to some critic reactions to films like Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla: King of the Monsters when it was released. Though GvK received positive reviews and KoTM received mixed reviews, critics often called the plots for the movies dumb, and some go on to say that the “dumb plots” are what you’d expect from movies of the Giant Monster genre (be it positive reactions to the films or negative). It honestly seems like an unfair approach to reviewing both films, and moreover, declare dumb plots a staple of the Kaiju genre.

I have multiple reasons behind saying this. For one, I would certainly say that dumb is not the way to describe the plot of the 1954 classic Godzilla, which perfectly captures to concern of nuclear weapons and has still aged excellently. Nor would it describe films such as Shin Godzilla, GMK, The Return of Godzilla, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah. You can also look to the 90’s Gamera trilogy as an example of excellently crafted films, especially Gamera 3: Revenge of Irys, which is widely regared the best in the trilogy.

As for GvK and KoTM, they honestly did not come off as particularly dumb (if at all), plot wise. And so, this brings me to my point of a double-standard. We see both films made an example out of unfairly for the problems other films have but are not criticized for. For example, the MCU films and quite a few other superhero films are great, but I would never call them intellectual films. However, you do not see critics rip those films to pieces like they did KoTM. So, I’d say films like GvK and KotM should be cut some slack.

Of course, this is only my opinion. You can say what you think on my conclusion, if you wish.

Yes. Thats a great way to put it, but I still think that KOTM could have at least put some more effort into the plot. Some human drama made me cringe a little, but none the less it is a pretty good movie. As for GvK, I read the novel 10 times and watched the movie and they were both exactly the same word for word, except for more details. Overall, GvK is a great movie, but not a long screen time is what I criticize it for.

Yeah, it really annoys me the way critics near automatically criticise kaiju and monster films in general for being dumb and thus "bad", but they never criticise other film genres for being dumb, even if they are equally as dumb or even more so. I definitely agree. Some critics even accuse the original 1954 Godzilla of being "idiotic". I have absolutely no respect for these critics.

I agree. I can't say I'm a big fan of the MV, and I think they would have done better with sticky to the tones of 2014 and Skull Island, but they were cool and I can enjoy them. However, the way Kaiju films and media are still ripped into by critics is just silly, and that's something I've always disliked about critics whenever they had anything to say about my favorite genre. I think people should just tune out those types of critics, and should just listen to fans. The whole point about them not tearing into things like the MCU films is very apt, especially when they have on par or worse flaws, and kind of shows what a joke critics have become.

Not to mention the fact that critics basically worship the MCU films despite the fact the Godzilla films are equal or superior to those films if you ask me (mostly). For those wondering why I prefer Godzilla films to MCU films: better fight scenes, better characters (Iron man is an absolute ****** imo), better lore and the presence of kaiju (maybe that's a bit of an unfair factor but still). Me and my family basically gave up on the MCU while watching them in timeline order (we haven't bothered watching any after Guardians of the Galaxy).

I continue to be annoyed by the double-standard. Some critics do it more than others but nearly all of them do it to some extent. To be honest, this double-standard makes even more sense now as critics on Rotten Tomatoes seem to be told to just write what the general audience wants rather than their actual opinions.
