Talk:Gamera the Giant Monster (Tokuma Shoten manga)

I was thinking this page could use a retitle, but before I do anything, I'd like to hear some input as to what others think this manga should be called. This page has had several titles over the years, and the way I see it, the best/current options are:

  • Gamera the Giant Monster (Tokuma Shoten manga)
  • Gamera the Giant Monster (1994-1995)
  • Gamera the Giant Monster (Monthly Manga Boys)

Personally, my vote is for option 3. No other comics or manga on the site are distinguished by year; they are always differentiated by publisher. In this case, however, because Tokuma Shoten published another manga series under the same title (all of which were released the same year this book was collected at that), with the first installment of that series also having a very similar title to this manga, I think a rename may be in order. it might be best to just call add "Monthly Manga Boys" to it since that's the magazine it was first serialized in. Worth noting, from what I've seen, several Japanese book sites also list it as 大怪獣ガメラ (マンガボーイズコミックススペシャル) "Giant Monster Gamera (Manga Boys Comics Special)" or otherwise include "マンガボーイズ" somewhere in the title to differentiate it from all else. Personally I think it would look neater, it's the easiest/simplest way to differentiate from the various other Gamera things with this title, etc. ~Shenanigans

I suppose it's possible it could be confused for the Captain Comics line, but generally our philosophy is that page titles don't need that level of specificity unless they're being distinguished from another page with a near-identical title. There is no other page for a Tokuma Shoten manga just titled "Gamera the Giant Monster," since the standalone books are numbered and subtitled. The reason I specified the publisher on this page at all is because there's another adaptation of the original movie that was published in 1984 by Nagaoka Shoten, so that one can be hosted at Gamera the Giant Monster (Nagaoka Shoten manga). I suppose I understand that. I still question if it is necessarily the best route for the title though since, even if we don’t have a page for the manga series on this wiki, the fact remains that the title of "Gamera the Giant Monster (Tokuma Shoten manga)" can still be used to refer to the separate manga series. Not to mention that the cover of the manga has “Manga Boys Comics Special” on it, and as I previously noted, most sites include "Manga Boys" somewhere in the title. I guess it is fine as-is, but even so, I'd still consider adding "Monthly Manga Boys" or "Manga Boys Special" or something of that nature to the title, as that seems to be what the manga is best known as across the board and the "safest" way to distinguish it from anything else. But I'd also like to hear others' opinions on the matter as well. ~Shenanigans
I suspect that there aren't a lot of people who will be searching for any of these manga by name (if at all), but I think a 'do not confuse' banner on this page should suffice. The way we tend to handle the page titles is that the publisher is prioritized first, then the name of the magazine/line failing that, and then the year failing them both. As I've said, because there is not going to be another page with a title that conflicts with this one, switching to the name of the magazine seems like complicating the title for no reason. Lots of manga have the name of the magazine they were originally published in on their paperback cover and in online listings, but that hasn't historically been a factor in our page titles (going off something with so much variance like that would create unnecessary inconsistency, methinks).
