Design name

This Godzilla doesn't have a design page yet - in part, I think, because no one's quite sure what to call it in English yet. "MinusGoji" is the clear favorite in the English-speaking fandom, but we'll be deferring to Japan as usual. Here's the problem, as Les explained:

I've been seeing people use FuGoji in English, based on the kanji for "minus" (負), but the Pixiv page for 負ゴジ just gives the pronunciation as MaiGoji. 負 can be pronounced ma but not mai normally, so I don't know what that's about

Maybe because the tagline has "mainasu" over 負 so the fans are making their own rules too

I am not exactly familiar with the rules of how the designs are named. Is it just whatever the fanbase picks up and spreads around until pretty much everyone uses it? If so, I would just hold off a month or two to see if something becomes far more widespread than the other. In the end, I think it's up to the fanbase to decide since it's not like Toho's giving us anything. Please let me know if the assumption of how this works is incorrect.--Keeri'ijra (talk)

The trouble is that we seem to have a consensus Japanese spelling, but not a pronunciation. We're going to use the Wikizilla Twitter to try and get Takashi Yamazaki to weigh in. I'd like to avoid the newest cinematic Godzilla not having a design page until months after the film's release in English-speaking territories, but I also don't want Wikizilla to tip the scales by hastily deciding to call the page FuGoji, MaiGoji, or something else that's flown under our radar so far.--Astounding Beyond Belief (talk) 16:06, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Fair point that we probably shouldn't wait so long, and hopefully Yamazaki actually has input, that would definitely be helpful. My go to would be FuGoji just because that's the base kanji translation, and I've yet to see it until now with a "Mai" pronunciation (not that I've been using it frequently, but still). On the other hand, I think that there is something to the fact that the film has been using mainasu for 負, so maybe that would be better for this specific situation regarding the movie.--Keeri'ijra (talk) 16:25, 29 November 2023‎ (UTC)

Any updates on reaching out to Takashi Yamazaki? And also, since I am new, can someone explain how Godzilla design names/pages work? like which ones get a page and which ones don't and how do you decide a name for one?- E-Scope04 (talk) 23:51, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

I actually think MaiGoji would be the better option now. As I previously mentioned the fact that the film uses "mainasu" for 負 should hold weight, and now Les has stated that there are apparently 0 results for FuGoji on Twitter, which is honestly quite surprising, but I feel like that shows the name is falling out of or never quite reached favor of the fandom.--Keeri'ijra (talk) 20:31, 12 December 2023‎ (UTC)
