RE: US Godzilla films restorations

Hi,

Are you aware of any site or anyone who has done restorations on the Americanized edits of all 15 Showa era Godzilla films and Godzilla 1985, and would be willing to share their work?

Thanks for the heads up. I happened to find pretty much all of them on internet archive with a restoration of some sort. The only ones that were taken just from VHS or other home media had been Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Gigantis: the Fire Monster, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Megalon and Terror of Mechagodzilla. Aside from that I could find most of the others.

I also had a question for you, are The Terror of Godzilla and Terror of Mechagodzilla the same edit? I know that the former was the title used in US theatres and has it in red in a freeze frame next to Mechagodzilla, but the latter has it usually by a building before it shows Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fighting. Though, the one I found on internet archive has it under the title "Terror of Mechagodzilla" it's shown by Mechagodzilla, with the word, "Terror" in red and the rest of the title in white. Are all of these the same Bob Conn edit aside from that or are they any different? Also, how did anyone get, "The Terror of Godzilla" title card in the first place? I thought it was lost and no no one had it, but I saw it in Space Hunter M's video and a screenshot through this site.

Be aware that most HD versions of Godzilla dubs produced by fans aren't restorations per se, but reconstructions combining the English audio/editing changes with the best available copies of the Japanese versions, with shots of English text either drawn from SD sources or recreated digitally.

There are multiple U.S. edits of Terror of Mechagodzilla under both titles; the Comprehensive Guide to Toho's English Versions goes into a bit more detail than Wikizilla. The The Terror of Godzilla title card on this site looks like a photo of a film projection (someone's head is in front of the screen). I'm not sure which Space Hunter M video you're referring to though.

Astounding, at 2:48 in his video Godzilla US Titles, you'll see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-KGsk1u-3I

Do you not have a more accurate or updated source of information other than a guide made on a fan site 12 years ago?

It looks like she combined footage of Mechagodzilla transforming from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla with a different photo of the U.S. The Terror of Godzilla title card - there's a noticeable drop in quality at the freeze frame.

While the Comprehensive Guide was originally posted in 2011, you can see at the bottom of the post that it was last edited in 2022. I don't understand why it being on a fan site is a mark against it. Toho barely acknowledges that most of the U.S. versions exist; I wouldn't expect them to sign off on a detailed history any time soon.

Okay, thanks for your help. I understand what you mean by reconstructions but those are the best I could find for those US edits and find them accurately. Some of the ones I found from Red Menace on internet archive credit you as one of his contributors. Nice work by the way! I was just trying to find the most accurate versions of the American recuts. Some VHS aren't fully intact and restorations that just come from one source are almost impossible to find.

In other words, if you don't mind I need to ask you one last question about regrading this. I noticed the reconstructions of Godzilla on Monster Island and Godzilla vs. the Cosmic Monster aren't very good and have some flaws and the rips I got from Megalon and Terror are pretty poor. Could you by chance tell me what the best quality home video releases are for those exact recuts?
