Singura is an alien hybrid kaiju who opposes SpaceGodzilla in the 2023 IDW Publishing one-shot comic Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla.

Name

Singura may be named after the gravitational singularity theorized to be at the center of a black hole. It also is reminiscent of the onomatopoeia “schwing”, used for denoting a sword slash.

Development

An original kaiju opponent was in Matt Frank's pitch to IDW Publishing for Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla from the start, with a confrontation between SpaceGodzilla and a black hole, one of the forces that birthed him, as the hook.[1] At first he attempted to make the new creature as unusual-looking as possible, experimenting with shapes to build the design around, including spheres.[1] Dissatisfied with the results, and acknowledging that the character would likely only appear in a single comic, he decided that "it would be better if I just had fun and threw together some cool design elements that I already liked," based around the idea of an insect-reptile hybrid.[1] The many concept designs for Orga provided inspiration, with Frank later realizing he had drawn from the Primal Rage monster Vertigo as well.[1]

Origins

Although Singura's backstory is not provided in Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla, creator Matt Frank imagined it as "a governmental weapon created by the forcibly merged DNA of Laitians and Ophiogans", the planet Pellucidia's upper-class and underclass species, respectively.[1]

Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla

After SpaceGodzilla blasted his way through air and ground forces on the planet Pellucidia, the Ophiogan commander ordered a mothership far larger than the kaiju into action, despite the apprehensions of his troops in the control room. It bombarded SpaceGodzilla with lasers, but he shot it down with a single Corona Beam. As it fell, it ejected a massive coffin-like object. Singura burst out of it and charged at SpaceGodzilla. He dodged its snapping jaws, only to be caught by the tail and thrown. He countered with his Corona Beam as he fell, causing it to roar in pain. Singura bent backwards and began using crystals in its chest cavity to generate a black hole. First SpaceGodzilla tried his Corona Beam, but the black hole completely absorbed it. As his feet lifted off the ground, he turned to his telekinesis, shattering the crystals. The black hole devoured Singura before disappearing, and SpaceGodzilla faced little further resistance as he continued ravaging the planet.

Abilities

Physical abilities

Singura possesses three saw blades, two on its hands and one on the tip of its tail, although they were not deployed against SpaceGodzilla. In close-quarters combat, it attempted to bite him before grabbing him by the tail and throwing him completely off the ground.

Black hole

Singura is able to generate a small black hole using the crystals in its chest cavity. So long as the crystals remain intact, the black hole will act on surrounding objects, but not Singura itself. It absorbed SpaceGodzilla's Corona Beam attack and was beginning to drag him towards it when he changed tactics.

Weaknesses

If the crystals in Singura's chest cavity are destroyed while they are generating a black hole, the black hole will instantly consume the monster.

Roar

In the trailer for Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla, Singura is given Gazort's roar from Ultraman Tiga, whose roar in turn samples Rodan's roar.
