Rock Critters are arthropod-like vertebrate monsters who appear in the 2005 film King Kong and the 2021 MonsterVerse film Godzilla vs. Kong.
Name
In Godzilla vs. Kong, the Rock Critters are called Arachno-claws are only named in the film's English audio description, this was pointed as a mistake by at least three of the crew behind Godzilla vs Kong.[2][3] They were called "Rock Critters" in concept art and "crab-creatures" in the film's novelization. Artist Ken Barthelmey said the creature had no name in the brief.[4] PUBG Mobile labels them as "Rock Crabs."[5]
Design
In King Kong, Rock Critters resemble a mixture of a crayfish and a spider. They have six legs and a pair of pincers. They have dark brown glassy eyes. Their whole body is covered with a crab-like armor. However according to their designers they are actually vertebrates and in their VFX art are shown to have bones including ribcages and shoulder blades.
In Godzilla vs. Kong, Rock Critters are more crab-like, with carapaces that resemble boulders when half-submerged in the ground.
