Doug is a Titan[9] who first appeared briefly in the 2021 Monsterverse film Godzilla vs. Kong and reappeared in its 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.[10] He is a member of an unnamed reptilian species that lives in the Hollow Earth.
Name
The Godzilla vs. Kong audio description calls Doug a Foetodon, a species from the 2005 King Kong remake by Universal Pictures, which has no affiliation with the Monsterverse.[3][4] However, the film's novelization simply identifies him and his kin as lizard-like monsters, while Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall - The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale uses Scaly Quadrupeds. "Doug" started as a popular nickname among fans, coined by the podcast It Came From A Monster Movie!,[11] but was then embraced by director Adam Wingard,[12] the Legendary Pictures Twitter and Instagram accounts,[13] an official T-shirt,[7] and the metaverse platform Virtua.[14] The T-shirt calls him Titanus Doug while Virtua uses Titanous Doug. However, it is unclear whether Monarch will assign him this classification in-universe.
Design
Doug's species is rotund in physique with large, green-colored eyes and short legs. Their osteoderms are also more jagged in shape, and somewhat resemble those found on the Hellhawks, another species inhabiting the Hollow Earth. The Virtua NFT of the creature shows that it has two rows of spikes running down its tail, ending in a heavily spiked tip resembling the thagomizer of a Stegosaurus.[15] They have thick, crocodile-like skin, which acts as armor against the many other threats in the Hollow Earth.[15]
Origins
Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall - The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale notes that director Adam Wingard asked that Doug's species resemble Godzilla, although the book does not confirm an evolutionary link.[16]
