Kamerus is a giant turtle monster who first appeared in the 1987 Dark Horse comic Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special.
Name
Kamerus' name comes from kame (カメ), the Japanese word for "turtle." Stephen Bissette's proposal sketch for the creature gave him the placeholder name Great Turtle.
His name is only spoken in Godzilla, King of the Monsters #0, which included a retelling of Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special. Writer Randy Stradley later clarified that "Kamerus" referred to the turtle monster from that earlier story.[1]
History
Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special
Kamerus was one of four ancient creatures, along with Godzilla, Soran, and Inagos, awakened by a radioactive slab discovered by a Tokyo construction crew. He did not reach civilization before Burton Helzer was able to drop the slab deep into the ocean via helicopter.
Godzilla, King of the Monsters #12
The mad scientist Mason contemplated bringing Kamerus and other monsters from the past into the pacifist future of 2299 to dominate the planet, although he was devoured by Godzilla before he could realize his plans.
Comic appearances
- Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special (1987)
- Godzilla, King of the Monsters #0, 12 (1995-1996) [only mentioned in #0]
