A robotic duplicate of Godzilla, Mechagodzilla was constructed in secrecy by Apex Cybernetics to end the reign of the Titans, and was piloted by Ren Serizawa via a neural connection between the mecha and the skull of King Ghidorah which Apex had acquired from eco-terrorist Alan Jonah. In 2024, Apex organized a mission with the scientific organization Monarch to lead an expedition into the Hollow Earth to find an energy source capable of powering Mechagodzilla in the wake of Godzilla's sudden rampages. When the energy source was recovered, it was used to activate Mechagodzilla while Godzilla and Kong battled in Hong Kong. However, the untested power source allowed Ghidorah's consciousness to possess Mechagodzilla, causing it to quickly break free of Apex's control. The rogue mecha killed its creators and tore its way out of the Apex facility, bursting free from beneath Victoria Peak Mountain just after Godzilla defeated Kong. The mechanical monster set its sights on its organic nemesis and bombarded him with its plethora of weaponry and empowered physical attacks, easily overpowering Godzilla. Just when Godzilla seemed outmatched, Kong came to his enemy's rescue, helping to turn the tide. By cooperating, Godzilla and Kong were able to triumph over the Ultimate Destroyer when Godzilla charged Kong's axe with his atomic breath, allowing Kong to slice Mechagodzilla apart and end its rampage.

Another Mechagodzilla appears in the comic miniseries Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong. Constructed by Lex Luthor using technology from Apex Cybernetics after traveling to Godzilla's universe, this Mechagodzilla was used by Luthor in an attempt to destroy the Justice League. It was built with a Titan-attracting beacon that drew the attention of Behemoth, Tiamat and Scylla, which allowed Luthor to command them against the Justice League.

The name "Mechagodzilla" is a portmanteau of mecha, a shortening of "mechanical," and Godzilla's name. According to director Adam Wingard, this Mechagodzilla was inspired by the simple, blocky designs of classic Transformers. He aimed to avoid the character designs of Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), recalling his unpleasant experience watching it in the front row of a movie theater. Wingard emphasized that he wanted Mechagodzilla to have a more coherent and iconic design, avoiding the overly complex and cluttered appearance of the Transformers in that film.

During a meeting with Adam Wingard and Legacy Effects Co-Head John Rosengrant, Jared Krichevsky received the directive: "[Mechagodzilla] has to be a Terminator," particularly the T-800. Krichevsky, Lindsay MacGowan, Darnell Isom, and Simon Weber of Legacy Effects collaborated on Mechagodzilla's design for Godzilla vs. Kong, with Wingard favoring Krichevsky's approach early on.<ref name="free reign">{{nl

After they saw the first pass we did they started giving more specific notes like making the teeth a part of the face or changing up the silhouette. Oh yes I think he could swim, or would more likely sink and would walk on the ocean floor. But his rockets could be switched to jets for underwater propulsion. First off, I wanted to thank you for taking part in this AMA. It’s not often you get to hear from the people who worked on design and concept art behind the scenes.<br>I have a few questions, but don’t worry about answering all of them if you don’t feel the need:<br>1. How does it feel to have designed two official MechaGodzillas? Right now you’re tied with Shinji Nishikawa. Design another Mechagodzilla, and you’ll take the lead in having designed the most MechaGodzillas in the franchise.<br>2. Did Toho have any influence over either the RPO MechaG or the GvK MechaG? Toho famously has a list of rules with Godzilla that must be followed in design and utilization; do they have a similar list for MechaG?<br>3. Are there any abilities or weapons either MechaGs were designed to have that simply weren’t used in the final films? GvK, for instance, appears to have missiles in its chest (judging by the MonsterArts figure).<br>4. Did you work on any other designs for GvK, or did you solely focus on MechaGodzilla?<br>5. GvK MechaG’s spines look strikingly similar to Mecha King Ghidorah’s own. Is this just a coincidence, or did Mecha King Ghidorah offer some design inspiration?<br>Thanks again for taking questions! This Mechagodzilla iteration is considerably thinner than previous incarnations of the character. Mechagodzilla is primarily a bright gunmetal silver color, with small hints of black, accented by a rich neon-red energy glow shining throughout its body through the gaps in its armored metal plates. Mechagodzilla's neck is ribbed and laced with robotic "gills," while its abdomen is reminiscent of a ribcage. Its head and toes bear a striking resemblance to King Ghidorah's while bearing Godzilla's lumbering frame.

Walter Simmons, as Mechagodzilla is activated (Godzilla vs. Kong)

Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ,   Mekagojira) is a mechanical Titan that appeared as the primary antagonist of the 2021 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla vs. Kong. It is the second incarnation of Mechagodzilla to appear in an American-made film, after the incarnation featured in the 2018 film Ready Player One.

Name

The name "Mechagodzilla" is a portmanteau of mecha, a shortening of "mechanical," and Godzilla's name. In-universe, it is Josh Valentine who gives the machine its name, after Bernie Hayes calls it "Robo-Godzilla." Apex Cybernetics simply refers to Mechagodzilla as "the Mecha," though a computer monitor calls it MEC. GODZILLA. Both the Godzilla vs. Kong theater program and materials from Toho's Japanese Blu-ray release of the film list the machine's classification as simply "Mechagodzilla," with a designation of "Unknown."[9][10] However, the packaging for Playmates' Mechagodzilla figures lists its classification as Titanus Gojira,[12] the same as Godzilla himself.

Development

Max Borenstein included Mechagodzilla in his first draft for the third Monsterverse film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), which he wrote before director Gareth Edwards left the project.[13] When Legendary Pictures brought him in to polish the Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) script, he was pleased to see it had made the cut this time: "It made a lot of sense to be there because then you have these two iconic adversaries, but neither one is a villain. So let's introduce an iconic villain."[13]

According to director Adam Wingard, this Mechagodzilla was inspired by the simple, blocky designs of classic Transformers. He aimed to avoid the character designs of Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), recalling his unpleasant experience watching it in the front row of a movie theater. Wingard emphasized that he wanted Mechagodzilla to have a more coherent and iconic design, avoiding the overly complex and cluttered appearance of the Transformers in that film.[14]

During a meeting with Adam Wingard and Legacy Effects Co-Head John Rosengrant, Jared Krichevsky received the directive: "[Mechagodzilla] has to be a Terminator," particularly the T-800.[15] Krichevsky, Lindsay MacGowan, Darnell Isom, and Simon Weber of Legacy Effects collaborated on Mechagodzilla's design for Godzilla vs. Kong, with Wingard favoring Krichevsky's approach early on.[16][17] They received few specific instructions, being requested by Toho to base this Mechagodzilla on Noriyoshi Ohrai's advance poster for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II and told not to give Mechagodzilla "shoulder rockets," which were ultimately added anyway, but otherwise given free reign.[17] Krichevsky, who had previously designed Mechagodzilla for another Warner Bros. film, Ready Player One (2018), [18] wanted his second rendition of the character to be as distinct as possible.[19] His goal to create a Mechagodzilla that was both fast and agile while retaining the durability of a tank.[15] The design process began in February 2018 and took six weeks. He presented two main designs, one with a traditional Godzilla-like body and another one with a boxy tank-like shape; the latter was chosen.[19] His initial attempt at a machine version of Godzilla, which was deemed too similar to a Transformer,[20] was scrapped, leading him to design Mechagodzilla with a lean, fish-like body and skeletal tail, in contrast to Godzilla's thick physique.[15] To enhance maneuverability, he gave Mechagodzilla extra reach with elongated arms.[19] Taking inspiration from previous Mechagodzilla iterations, in particular Kiryu,[21] Krichevsky modeled Mechagodzilla's spines after Mecha-King Ghidorah's,[22] incorporated elements like the putting an "x" pattern on the panels running down its arms and legs as a homage to the original Showa era Mechagodzilla's Cross Attack Beam shutter, and borrowed Kiryu's "ribbed neck and abdomen pieces."[23][19] Despite Wingard's distaste for Dark of the Moon, the Dinobots from Transformers: Age of Extinction were another point of inspiration.[22] Its hands were inspired by chameleon feet[22] and mirror hand syndrome.[15][24] Mechagodzilla's design aimed for brutality and intensity, featuring unique additions such as claw hands and buzzsaw fingers, as well as incorporating details like armored patterns and ribbed pieces. The resemblance to Godzilla was intended for intimidation.[19] Seeing his design on screen was a highlight for Krichevsky, especially noticing retained details like the buzzsaw fingers. Defensive spines and various abilities beyond rocket fists and a laser beam were considered. The red color scheme was chosen by production, and Krichevsky aimed to make the mechanics of Mechagodzilla's design somewhat plausible.[19] Mechagodzilla's model took about 3-4 days to complete.[25] He described the process of designing Mechagodzilla as "fun"[26] and the fact that he designed two Mechagodzillas as "beyond wild and incredibly rare".[23]

Design

This Mechagodzilla iteration is considerably thinner than previous incarnations of the character. Mechagodzilla is primarily a bright gunmetal silver color, with small hints of black, accented by a rich neon-red energy glow shining throughout its body through the gaps in its armored metal plates. Mechagodzilla's neck is ribbed and laced with robotic "gills," while its abdomen is reminiscent of a ribcage. Its head and toes bear a striking resemblance to King Ghidorah's while bearing Godzilla's lumbering frame.

Mechagodzilla's back supports three rows of small, square-shaped dorsal plates, the edges of which are akin to axe blades. There are bright red lights at each tip that travel downward from its head to its back, which then converge into one row as they move down its tail. Mechagodzilla has a long, segmented tail with a set of small twin blades at the tip which can spin like a drill. Its head has a pair of small, bright red eyes that flashed blue when it begins to go out of control. Prior to being possessed by Ghidorah's consciousness, its eyes glow a steady bright red color, and after falling under Ghidorah's influence, its pupils disappear, leaving behind pure red eyeballs.

The mech’s arms and hands are noticeably larger and thicker in proportion to the rest of its body, and the panels on its arms and legs are laced with armored plating. Its claws are sharp and resemble claw cranes, with small razor-sharp circular saws at the bottom of each finger and black absorbing pads on the fingers’ tips. It has concealed four-cell missile launchers within its shoulder pads and two 16-cell missile launchers behind them which fire forward.

Both of Mechagodzilla's enormous feet support a total of five digits, with four at the front and one at the back. Its legs are shown to contain various pieces of machinery such as hydraulic pistons to support its massive weight.

Personality

Monarch classifies Mechagodzilla's behavior as that of a "destroyer,"[9] along with fellow Titans King Ghidorah, Rodan, Scylla, MUTO Prime, Camazotz, Tiamat, and the Skull Devil. Mechagodzilla is initially completely under the control of Ren Serizawa, who, using a neural interface, controls Mechagodzilla like an extension of his own body. However, once King Ghidorah's consciousness takes control of the machine, Mechagodzilla becomes incredibly violent and destructive, immediately turning on and killing its creators before bursting free from its facility. Mechagodzilla begins destroying Hong Kong before turning its attention to Godzilla, attempting to brutally kill him. While Mechagodzilla initially continues to focus its onslaught on Godzilla after Kong intervenes, it eventually displays the same murderous intent toward him once he becomes enough of an obstacle. According to designer Jared Krichevsky, a "new consciousness" was created when Ghidorah's personality merged with the mechanical Titan's artificial intelligence.[27] Director Adam Wingard concurred.[28]

According to the Japanese theater program for Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla runs on the operating system "Kuronuma Psionic v1.3" (クロヌマ超常現象V1.3),[9] in reference to the Black Hole Planet 3 Alien leader Kuronuma from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.

In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Lex Luthor was able to operate Mechagodzilla without issue, likely because he did not incorporate a Ghidorah skull into the mech's controls.

Origins

The decaying, severed head of King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which would be later acquired by Apex Cybernetics for use in the development of Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla is a cybernetic Titan that was created by Apex Cybernetics in secret to destroy Godzilla and end the reign of Titans. At some point during the five years after Godzilla defeated King Ghidorah, Apex obtained a Ghidorah skull previously acquired by Alan Jonah's ecoterrorist organization in Isla de Mara, Mexico, following the three-headed monster's battle with Godzilla there. Apex connected the skull's neural networks to Mechagodzilla. Bernie Hayes theorizes that Apex Cybernetics placed a second Ghidorah skull inside Mechagodzilla to take full advantage of the Titan's telepathic abilities, while the film's novelization shows Walter Simmons purchasing two skulls from Jonah. Neither version of the story explains the origin of the second skull.

Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong

In the time following King Ghidorah's defeat, billionaire Walter Simmons and his company, Apex Cybernetics, focused on helping mankind rebuild and respond to the rise of the Titans. Bernie Hayes, an online conspiracy theorist and host of the Titan Truth Podcast, worked deep undercover for Apex Cybernetics in Pensacola, Florida for five years to try and expose the company's shady activities. Just as Hayes was downloading data from an Apex computer onto a flash drive, Godzilla rose from the ocean and attacked the facility. As the staff began to evacuate, Hayes sneaked into a restricted area of the facility where he was confronted by two guards. As they held him at gunpoint, the two guards were suddenly killed by a blast of Godzilla's atomic breath, leaving Bernie with small injuries. As the smoke cleared and Godzilla continued his rampage, Bernie saw a strange piece of technology resembling a giant robotic eye among the ruins of the facility.

Soon after, Walter Simmons and his chief technology officer, Ren Serizawa, visited Nathan Lind at Denham University in Philadelphia, where they showed their interest in his studies of the Hollow Earth, the evolutionary source of the Titans. They explained that a deep scan of the planet's core revealed a powerful source of energy that sustained its ecosystem, similar to the energy of Godzilla himself. They proposed a joint mission between Apex and Monarch to enter the Hollow Earth and harvest this source of energy to create a weapon capable of defeating Godzilla.

Suspicious after Godzilla's attack, Madison Russell and her friend Josh Valentine sought out Bernie, and agreed that Apex had something to do with Godzilla's change in behavior. The three then broke into the ruined Apex facility, finding that the "eye" Bernie described was now gone. Madison found an elevator that took them to sublevel 33, a mysterious area mentioned in the data Hayes managed to download. Upon reaching the sublevel, the group of three hid in a nearby transport vessel that housed Skullcrawler eggs. The vessel was then transported to Apex's headquarters in Hong Kong. As the three began to investigate the large chamber they found themselves in, they stumbled upon the activation test for Apex's ultimate anti-Titan weapon: Mechagodzilla.

As Mechagodzilla activated, with Serizawa controlling it via a neural link, Simmons unleashed a giant Skullcrawler, codenamed "Number 10," into the chamber as a test subject. The Skullcrawler set its sights on the small group of people and began to give chase. As Josh and Bernie took cover in a small hatch, Madison tripped as she was running. Before the Skullcrawler could devour her, Mechagodzilla restrained it, held it by its arms, and sliced it in half with its Proton Scream before powering down. Serizawa reported that Mechagodzilla only reached about 40% of its power capacity. Simmons stated this was as expected, and told them not to worry as they would soon have the power they needed to finish their creation. However, Godzilla sensed Mechagodzilla's activation and began swimming toward Hong Kong.

As Madison, Josh, and Bernie continued to sneak around the facility, they came upon a room containing Ghidorah's skull, which Apex had converted into a living supercomputer and neural interface used to control Mechagodzilla. After Kong had led the Apex-Monarch team into a massive castle-like structure that was built for his species, he found a massive axe that glowed with blue energy, which caused the ground around him began to glow with the same energy. Apex immediately sent out a spider-like drone to extract and analyze a sample of the energy, much to Monarch's disagreement.

Nevertheless, Apex managed to copy and recreate the energy from the Hollow Earth and implant it into Mechagodzilla. Simmons gave the order to activate Mechagodzilla once more, but Serizawa objected, warning him that the neural interface was untested and that they had no idea how Mechagodzilla could react to the new source of energy. Simmons dismissed these concerns and ordered Serizawa to activate the mecha.

As Godzilla and Kong fought in Hong Kong for supremacy, Apex activated Mechagodzilla, which was now infused with the power from the Hollow Earth. However, this also prompted Ghidorah's consciousness to possess the mecha. The machine instantly severed its neural link with Serizawa and went out of control, killing Simmons. An electrical shock promptly killed Serizawa before Mechagodzilla broke free from its facility underneath Victoria Peak Mountain and began to destroy what was left of Hong Kong with its Proton Scream. Godzilla, who had just nearly killed Kong, roared at his mechanical doppelgänger and promptly charged at him.

Mechagodzilla, recognizing its arch-nemesis, responded with a charge of its own, firing a barrage of missiles at the King of the Monsters. Both monsters clashed, and Mechagodzilla activated its jet boosters as its claws ignited with energy, knocking Godzilla to the ground with ease. Watching the battle from the control room, Madison, Josh, and Bernie realized that Mechagodzilla was still being controlled by the command center, so Josh tried to hack into Mechagodzilla's system in an attempt to slow it down.

The possessed Mechagodzilla battles Godzilla in Hong Kong

As Mechagodzilla continued its assault, it grabbed Godzilla by the head and slammed it against multiple buildings. Finally, the two monsters engaged in a beam lock, only for Mechagodzilla to pour more energy into its Proton Scream, knocking Godzilla over once more and severely burning his chest. As the mechanical Titan continued its relentless assault against Godzilla, Lind used a HEAV as a defibrillator on Kong's chest, reviving him. As Kong woke up, he witnessed the battle between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. Jia convinced Kong that Godzilla wasn't the enemy and that Mechagodzilla was the true threat to get the ape to help Godzilla. Convinced, Kong readied for battle after Jia warned him to be careful. As Kong sprung into action, Mechagodzilla dragged Godzilla to the ground once more. It pried Godzilla's jaws open, intending on firing its Proton Scream into Godzilla's mouth. Just before Mechagodzilla dealt the killing blow, Kong jumped onto Mechagodzilla's back and pulled its head back, forcing it to fire its Proton Scream into the sky. Mechagodzilla threw Kong off of its back and was just about to strike, only for Godzilla to grab one of its arms, stopping the oncoming attack and allowing Kong to do the same. Both monsters joined forces, pulling Mechagodzilla through a building by its arms. Mechagodzilla soon broke free of both monsters' grip, knocking Kong away as it dealt with Godzilla. Mechagodzilla delivered a swift uppercut to Godzilla's chin before pinning him to a building. But before Mechagodzilla could deliver a blow from its tail, Kong reentered the fight, his axe at hand, and swung the weapon at Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla quickly gained the upper hand once more, pinning Kong against a building as it lashed its spinning drill-tipped tail into Kong’s face, only for him to catch it.

As the battle was still taking place, Josh was still trying to hack into Mechagodzilla's system, only for Hayes to dismiss the motion and suggest they have one last drink before they died. This gave Josh an idea, as he took Hayes' flask of alcohol and poured it over Mechagodzilla's control panel, causing it to spark and making Mechagodzilla momentarily stall. Godzilla took this opportunity to fire his atomic breath at Kong's axe, supercharging it. As Kong broke free, he began to strike Mechagodzilla with the axe, managing to chop both of its arms off before severing one of its legs, bringing Mechagodzilla down to the ground. As Kong lifted his axe over its head, Mechagodzilla attempted to fire one last Proton Scream but failed as Kong slammed his weapon onto Mechagodzilla's neck, then tore off its head. Kong held up Mechagodzilla's severed head and spine and roared triumphantly, then threw it aside, ending Mechagodzilla's brief reign of terror.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

While Mechagodzilla does not appear in the film, the mech was mentioned in passing as Bernie Hayes complained that he helped take down the mecha, but no one online believes him.

The mecha was mentioned again after Trapper Beasley went to retrieve the B.E.A.S.T. Glove in order to treat Kong's frostbite, with Ilene Andrews explaining to Hayes that, after Mechagodzilla's battle with Godzilla and Kong, Monarch realized that there were threats that exceeded the latter's capabilities, leading to the glove's creation.

Abilities

Mechagodzilla is a remarkably powerful fighter. Having been constructed by Apex Cybernetics to destroy the Titans, particularly Godzilla, it was easily able to overpower the King of the Monsters in combat and nearly kill him, as well as fight two Titans at once. Jared Krichevsky stated that had Apex obtained a direct sample of the Hollow Earth energy and conducted proper testing of it, Mechagodzilla would have been even more powerful.[29]

A-74 Proton Scream

Mechagodzilla's Proton Scream overpowering Godzilla's atomic breath

Mechagodzilla has a series of lenses that assemble inside of its throat, allowing it to focus and fire a concentrated red beam of pure energy from its maw called the A-74 Proton Scream (A-74プロトンスクリーム)[9] or simply Proton Scream (プロトンスクリーム).[30] According to the Japanese theater program for Godzilla vs. Kong, the Proton Scream has an energy yield of "4.10 x 1080 (1216)" joules,[9] though this figure is likely a misprint.[c] Nevertheless, when deployed at 40% power, it was sufficient to cut a large Skullcrawler in half in gruesome fashion. After Mechagodzilla was powered up with Hollow Earth energy, the Proton Scream was potent enough to cleave through multiple buildings in a matter of seconds and prevail in a beam lock against Godzilla's atomic breath, blasting the Titan backward and leaving a searing wound on his chest. Director Adam Wingard, however, has suggested that this was partially due to Godzilla not being able to fire his atomic breath at full strength, due to the energy he expended blasting a hole into the Hollow Earth and battling King Kong.[31] In an apparent imitation of the "Kiss of Death" Godzilla used to kill the female MUTO, Mechagodzilla favored firing the Proton Scream down its enemies' throats. Wingard has given conflicting answers regarding whether Mechagodzilla could have killed Godzilla with this technique.[32][33] Upon being charged by Hollow Earth energy and possessed by Ghidorah, its Proton Scream became wrapped in an electrical coil, similar in appearance to Ghidorah's gravity beams, with the coil's color being similar to the Showa Mechagodzilla's Space Beams. According to Jared Krichevsky, Mechagodzilla could fire another Proton Scream from its tail, similar to Shin Godzilla, although this went unused in the film.[29]

Missile launchers

Mechagodzilla unleashing a barrage of missiles at Godzilla

Mechagodzilla has two sixteen-cell missile launchers which rise from behind its shoulder pads. They did little to slow Godzilla's charge, despite each missile releasing a plethora of smaller missiles before impact, though they did cause him to roar out in pain. When Kong and Godzilla held its arms, Mechagodzilla deployed a four-cell missile launcher hidden in its left shoulder against Godzilla, causing him to release his grip. Jared Krichevsky also designed Mechagodzilla to have three concealed four-cell missile launchers in its chest; though never shown on-screen, they are visible on its S.H. MonsterArts figure and are seen in the "Rise of Mechagodzilla" special feature for Godzilla vs. Kong.[23]

Jet boosters

Mechagodzilla knocking Godzilla down with a plasma punch combined with its jet boosters.

Mechagodzilla has a set of six rocket boosters that fire out of openable ports by its dorsal fins. These boosters make Mechagodzilla more agile in close-quarters combat, helping it gain the upper hand against Godzilla and enhance its jumps.[21] Designer Jared Krichevsky confirmed that there are also jets inside of Mechagodzilla's tail,[20]

Physical capabilities

Mechagodzilla charging up its Proton Scream, putting its teeth on full display

Mechagodzilla favors close-quarters combat rather than ranged assaults. It used its massive claws to heavily stun Godzilla multiple times and even managed to throw him into multiple buildings, before effortlessly dragging him across the ground. It also lifted and tossed Kong to the side easily. Mechagodzilla is equipped with crane-like Rotor Claws (ロータークロウズ)[9] rather than claws that resemble Godzilla's fingers. The interiors of these claws are adorned with industrial buzzsaws, allowing them to cut through flesh while grappling.[34] Much like Kiryu, this Mechagodzilla incarnation can rotate its hands like drills and can use the synthesized Hollow Earth energy to deliver extra damage in the form of plasma punches.[35] These punches have a maximum output temperature of 3,400 degrees Celsius, or 6,152 degrees Fahrenheit.[9] It can charge its limbs with additional power from the synthesized Hollow Earth energy source to strengthen its attacks, mostly its claws and flat feet, although it has also been shown to charge its elbows, knees, and feet as well. Mechagodzilla's limbs glow blue in the film while using this technique, while its charged punches glow red in Godzilla Battle Line.

Mechagodzilla also has two sets of industrial shredders within its mouth: one set on the roof of the mouth, and the other set on its bottom jaw. Though it only tried using them once on Kong in the film, within several close-up shots, the teeth of these grinders can be seen rotating, indicating that they are functional. Mechagodzilla's tail is also a versatile weapon, which it used to knock Kong off of its back. It is tipped with three long spikes that can be rotated at high speeds to act like a powered drill.

Neural connection

A computer monitor displaying the neural connection between Mechagodzilla and the skull of King Ghidorah

Monarch describes Mechagodzilla as "bio-mechanical."[9] Due to Apex Cybernetics connecting the neural networks of King Ghidorah's skull to Mechagodzilla, Ren Serizawa was able to remotely pilot Mechagodzilla from inside the skull. Consequently, it also allowed Ghidorah's consciousness to take control and sever its neural link with Serizawa once it was powered with the Hollow Earth energy source. In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Lex Luthor also appears to control Mechagodzilla via neural connection, aided by his warsuit.

Swimming

Mechagodzilla swimming in PUBG Mobile

According to designer Jared Krichevsky, Mechagodzilla can swim,[20][36] and its rockets could be switched to jets for underwater propulsion.[20] It demonstrates this ability in PUBG Mobile, attacking a fleet of ships.[37]

Drones

In PUBG Mobile, Mechagodzilla can launch several aerial drones from its back. Each is equipped with a machine gun.

Learning algorithms

According to B-roll footage for Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla also has learning algorithms.[38]

Titan-affecting frequencies

Scylla, Tiamat, and Behemoth submitting to Mechagodzilla as their Alpha

Mechagodzilla's eye appears to be capable of making a noise similar to the Orca. This led Godzilla to attack Pensacola, although he left without locating it. He later targeted Hong Kong after Mechagodzilla was fully activated. In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla can emit a frequency that affects other Titans on a global scale, as it called Behemoth, Scylla, and Tiamat to Metropolis while irritating Kong on Skull Island. It also made the three Titans it called to Metropolis submit to the mecha as their Alpha, allying themselves with Mechagodzilla against the Justice League.

Loudspeakers

In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Lex Luthor communicated with the Justice League while remotely controlling Mechagodzilla using loudspeakers.

Self-destruct mechanism

According to Jared Krichevsky, Mechagodzilla possessed a self-destruct mechanism for emergencies, although it went unused.[39]

Durability

Mechagodzilla's endoskeleton is composed of titanium,[40] and its body frame is made of a T-1 Nanometal Skeleton Housing.[9] This makes the mecha incredibly resistant to damage, shrugging off the majority of Godzilla and Kong's attacks. It shows no signs of strain in its initial battle with Godzilla, and when Kong joins the fight is still able to hold its own. Mechagodzilla immediately gets back to its feet after being forcibly pulled through a building by Godzilla and Kong and does not appear to take any noticeable physical damage from repeated strikes from Kong's axe before it is charged by Godzilla's atomic breath. Jared Krichevsky stated that Mechagodzilla could endure brief exposure to Godzilla's atomic breath,[29] but would be damaged by prolonged subjection to it.[36] In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla withstood blows from Batman's Bat-Mech without damage.

Weaknesses

Kong triumphantly holding Mechagodzilla's severed head

Mechagodzilla is equipped with a Maser Power Core ( メイサーパワーコア,   Meisā Pawā Koa, or メーザパワーコア,   Mēza Pawā Koa) which has a capacity equivalent to 600 roentgens of radiation.[9] The mech requires a substantial amount of power to operate at full capacity, with a total energy output of 2.42 gigawatts,[9] and is shown to burn through energy rather quickly, as it was depowered shortly after using its Proton Scream at only 40% capacity. The energy source within the Hollow Earth was required to charge Mechagodzilla up to full combat potential; according to designer Jared Krichevsky, it could have run for 24 hours had it not been destroyed.[21] However, this does not appear to be a concern for Lex Luthor's Mechagodzilla in Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong. Krichevsky also stated that he believed Mechagodzilla would be vulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse.[29]

Mechagodzilla was momentarily stalled when Josh Valentine poured Bernie Hayes' flask of alcohol onto its control panel, causing its satellite link to be disrupted. This bought Godzilla the time needed to charge Kong's axe, after which the Titan easily sliced the mecha apart. According to Krichevsky, Mechagodzilla would have likely fallen against Godzilla's Burning form.[41]

Comics

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong

After the Toyman brought assorted Titans from another universe to the DC Universe through the use of the Dreamstone, Lex Luthor later discovered that parts of Mechagodzilla were also brought to his world when he located Mechagodzilla's eye, which doubled as a beacon luring Titans to its location, in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Through Mechagodzilla, Lex and his assistant, Mercy Graves, were able to learn more about the Titans, Godzilla, and Apex Cybernetics's work, prompting him to use all available data to reconstruct the mech using LexCorp's vast resources, seeing Mechagodzilla as an opportunity to bolster LexCorp's weapons systems beyond anything they had created before. Lex was also able to replicate the beacon of Mechagodzilla's eye and had his forces place beacons in other locations to distract the Justice League. Shortly thereafter, construction of Mechagodzilla was completed, though Mercy warned him that they should deactivate the original beacon still active within Mechagodzilla, which began luring the Titans to Metropolis. However, Lex refused to do so and welcomed the challenge, declaring that the Titans needed to learn "who the true Alpha is" as he prepared to launch Mechagodzilla. With Godzilla chained in the bottom of the ocean the Titans would submit to Mechagodzilla and begin rampaging throughout Metropolis alongside him, with the Justice League appearing to combat them as it battled Batman's Bat-Mech and then Green Lanterns' Green Lantern Robo. Kong, under Gorilla Grodd's control, would help Mechagodzilla double team the Bat-Mecha until Beast Boy transformed into a Kong shaped form and took on Kong.

Roar

The Monsterverse Mechagodzilla's roars are mostly Godzilla's roars that have been increased in pitch and edited to sound metallic. Once King Ghidorah's consciousness takes control of the mecha, it emits mechanically modified Ghidorah roars. Many of Mechagodzilla's sound effects originate from the Transformers live-action series, which, coincidently, was also worked on by Erik Aadahl. For the mobile game Godzilla Battle Line, Mechagodzilla received completely original roars.

Trivia

  • Mechagodzilla is the final "Big Five" Toho monster to appear in a Monsterverse film, the others being Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan.
  • The Monsterverse Mechagodzilla is the tallest incarnation of Mechagodzilla to date, standing at 400 feet tall (~122 meters). It surpasses the 120-meter tall Heisei Mechagodzilla, the former record holder, by roughly two meters.
  • This incarnation of Mechagodzilla is the first to battle King Kong. A previous Kong opponent, Mechani-Kong in King Kong Escapes, inspired the creation of the character.
  • This Mechagodzilla has similarities to the three live-action Toho incarnations of the character. Like the Showa Mechagodzilla, it first emerges from a mountain, engages in a beam lock with Godzilla, fires missiles, fights Godzilla and a mammalian monster helping him, and is defeated by having its head torn off, though the Showa Mechagodzilla was defeated by Godzilla while Kong defeats this Mechagodzilla. This Mechagodzilla is built by humans to destroy Godzilla and other monsters after studying the remains of King Ghidorah, has its primary ranged attack fired from its mouth like Godzilla and fires missiles from its shoulders like the Heisei Mechagodzilla. The Titan is also a cyborg with the consciousness and components of a previously slain kaiju incorporated into its controls, uses a distorted version of Godzilla and later King Ghidorah’s roar as its own, and has rotating hands used in melee combat like Kiryu.
  • This the first Mechagodzilla to appear in a Godzilla film and be defeated by a character other than Godzilla.
  • This is the first incarnation of Mechagodzilla to be primarily built by humans and still serve as the main antagonist.
  • The use of King Ghidorah's skull and DNA to control Mechagodzilla is reminiscent of the film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, in which Mecha-King Ghidorah's components were used to construct Mechagodzilla. Furthermore, just as Ghidorah's brain takes over control of Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong and drives it berserk, in the Shogakukan manga adaptation of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mecha-King Ghidorah's programming overrides control over Mechagodzilla and causes G-Force to lose control of it. Godzilla also required the help of another monster to take down the machine (Fire Rodan in the manga and Kong in the film).
  • Mechagodzilla is teased in a newspaper article during the end credits montage of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, in which a person named De La Rosa claims that Monarch is building a "mechanized giant" on Skull Island. It is unknown whether this reflects an early version of Godzilla vs. Kong or is meant to be in-universe misinformation, as De La Rosa also accuses Monarch of "[trying] to create organic Titans in the past" and is said to be part of a group that believes the 2014 MUTO incident was an inside job.
  • Mechagodzilla designer Jared Krichevsky estimated that the machine cost Apex $3 trillion to build.[21] By comparison, Raymond Martin's Titan Hunter cost approximately $500 million.
  • Mechagodzilla’s beam is called the A-74 Proton Scream, referencing the release year of the original Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
  • Mechagodzilla's body frame is composed of T-1 Nanometal Skeleton Housing. Nanometal is the name of the autonomous metal substance which composes Mechagodzilla in the GODZILLA anime trilogy.
  • The method by which Mechagodzilla kills Number 10 heavily resembles how King Ghidorah dispatched Rodan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, foreshadowing their connection.
  • In storyboards published in the production book Godzilla & Kong: The Cinematic Storyboard Art of Richard Bennett, Mechagodzilla folds into a defensive "armadillo mode" to deflect Godzilla's atomic breath, possibly as an homage to the 1974 incarnation's shield capabilities.
  • Mechagodzilla is the first Toho kaiju other than Godzilla to have a major role in a Monsterverse comic; this incarnation is also the first version of the character to appear in a comic crossover.

Notes

  1. The sole source which provides a weight stat for Mechagodzilla is a booklet included with EZHobi's Shin Godzilla Furious Red figure, which miswrites it as "605,45 tons" (p. 31). Whether this was intended to read “60,545 tons” or not is unknown.
  2. Measured at the widest point of the foot.
  3. The number in parentheses does not match the multiplier of the equation. If 1080 is interpreted to mean 1080, 4.10 x 1080 would equal an energy yield about 100 billion times greater than the entire mass-energy of the observable universe. 4.10 x 1216 would equal a comparatively more reasonable 758 petajoules, and was therefore likely the intended figure.

Being @legacyeffects, theres lots of T-800s about and so I studied what made them terrifying. So that became my main source of inspiration. The skeletal structure, the eerie but uncanny similarity of man with the cold steel of machine. Mechagodzilla had to look different than any other previous versions So I knew RPO was off the table. He couldn't look like an exact machine version of Godzilla, which was my first attempt. So I went to opposites, Godzilla has a thick body, so I went with a lean, fish-ike body and skeletal tail, Godzilla has stubby arms, so I gave him extra reach. The claw hands were something I pitched in the room, but I knew they needed to see it to understand it. One note was that the hands needed to be unique. I decided the claws could have a range of flexibility and possibilities, So I based this off of something called mirror-hand syndrome. I wanted this Mecha to be fast and maneuverable has built like a tank.

      My questions are:
      1. Was there any guidelines or rules you had to follow for making the design in GvK? Was there perhaps something you wanted to try but had to change or remove? Or were you given a lot of freedom with it?

      1. No guidelines initially other than I think they didn't want shoulder rockets. But otherwise it was blue sky to do what we wanted. After they saw the first pass we did they started giving more specific notes like making the teeth a part of the face or changing up the silhouette. But otherwise I was given a lot of freedom and everything I did showed up on screen. It was a very fast design process which is unusual. Sometimes you can do hundreds of versions of a character. In this case I did two.

      1. What was your input on Wingard's inspiration for the design being derived from the simplicity of the Transformers designs? (That last part was mentioned in an interview with him)
      2. Not sure if it was you or another concept artist who said it but it was mentioned that GVK MechaG could probably swim, does he have any other secret tricks and abilities up his sleeve?

    2. Krichevsky, Jared (22 May 2021). "1. Its probably something he was thinking about when making his decisions and was evaluating different designs, but we didn't get any specific notes to make it one way or another. My first pass on Mecha G got a "Looks too much like a Transformer" note, and they were addressing some specific features that I had built in.
      2. Oh yes I think he could swim, or would more likely sink and would walk on the ocean floor. But his rockets could be switched to jets for underwater propulsion. I did build those into the tail but I never demonstrated it in the images, which I kick myself sometimes for not including. But lets just say there's a lot of fun toys built into him.
      3. I think I got to explore everything I could at the time. There's always more ideas and more to add, but sadly I don't get all the time in the world, so that's when it goes on to production and animation where they start figuring those things out. Maybe as I move up I'll hopefully get more say.

      5. A little bit of all of them are in there. But Kiryu is the biggest inspiration
      6. Kiryu is also my fav but I love Showa as well. So classic.
      7. LOVED Shin
      8. Of course. I grew up on late night Godzilla movies.
      9. Well now it's Shin but I do love Legendary's Goji

•I heard that your design was based on the transformers (bayverse),what was the decepticon or autobot that you based on?
•I love your work, MechaGodzilla's design is beautiful, I think the best thing that 2021 brought me
•The design of the MechaGodzilla dorsal fins resembles the ones that mecha king ghidorah had, were you also inspired by that version???"

      2. Sort of, I looked at the dinobots but pulled most of my refs from prior MechaG's

    1. NateZilla10000 (22 May 2021). "Hello! First off, I wanted to thank you for taking part in this AMA. It's not often you get to hear from the people who worked on design and concept art behind the scenes.
I have a few questions, but don't worry about answering all of them if you don't feel the need:
      1. How does it feel to have designed two official MechaGodzillas? Right now you're tied with Shinji Nishikawa. Design another Mechagodzilla, and you'll take the lead in having designed the most MechaGodzillas in the franchise.
      2. Did Toho have any influence over either the RPO MechaG or the GvK MechaG? Toho famously has a list of rules with Godzilla that must be followed in design and utilization; do they have a similar list for MechaG?
      3. Are there any abilities or weapons either MechaGs were designed to have that simply weren't used in the final films? GvK, for instance, appears to have missiles in its chest (judging by the MonsterArts figure).
      4. Did you work on any other designs for GvK, or did you solely focus on MechaGodzilla?
      5. GvK MechaG's spines look strikingly similar to Mecha King Ghidorah's own. Is this just a coincidence, or did Mecha King Ghidorah offer some design inspiration?
Thanks again for taking questions! Have a great day!"

    2. Krichevsky, Jared (22 May 2021). "1. It's beyond wild and incredibly rare. I can't believe it honestly.
      2. Toho wanted a very specific MechaG based on Noriyoshi Ohrai's posters. They seemed to trust Adam on this one, and I'm honored that Toho gave their blessing because I loved seeing it on screen.
      3. Yeah the missile chest and some jets in the tail. But they gave him some stuff that surprised me too like the plasma punches.
      4. I did some other stuff for GVK but none of it made the cut.
      5. I took some inspiration from Mecha King Ghidorah ;)"

What gave you the idea to Give MV Mechagodzilla Claw Hands?
Which Mechagodzilla, ( Excluding the Monsterverse and Ready Player one versions ) Is your favorite?
And finally, what other Godzilla monsters would you like to design?
Thanks alot! Mechagodzilla 2021 is definitely one of my favorite iterations of this iconic doppelganger"

    2. Krichevsky, Jared (22 May 2021). "1. They wanted something different with the hands, so I thought of mirror hand syndrome, which is something weird, it also evoked chameleon feet, and I thought it was something that would be unique for gripping.

And about how many hours did it take you to complete those steps in this particular image? (and how many days was that work spread across?) Also, what programs did you use along the way?

    2. Krichevsky, Jared (22 May 2021). "It's all 3D with some brush work on top. The model took about 3-4 days to put together and a day and half to render and paint on top of. It's very fast. The primary software I use is Zbrush, Keyshot, and Photoshop. Overall I think I was on MechaG for 4-5 Weeks.

      1. Which is your favourite Japanese/Toho Mechagodzilla (Showa, Heisei, Millenium, Rewa/Netflix Anime)?
      2. Who was more fun to design: MV MechaG or RP1 MechaG?
      3. If Godzilla was at full power, would he have been able to beat Mechagodzilla?
Hope you're having a better week than I am! 🙃"

      2. MV was so fun just because I had the freedom to do what I wanted.

"Hey jared GvK was probably the most fun i had watching a movie this year 1)How many wrestling moves can mechagodzilla do? 2)How did you find that nsfw image of mechagodzilla you posted on april 8th 3)How much of ghidorah's consciousness is actually in MechaG's "body?" 4)Do you like choccy milk? 5)Whats your opinion on the concept of hollow earth in the monsterverse 6)if you had to assign a specific voice to the kaiju in the monsterverse what would they be 7)Could mechagodzilla possibly wield kong's axe 8)What pronouns do you think mechagodzilla should be referred to as asking out of curiosity 9)can kongs axe theoretically absorb MG's beam?
And lastly DOES A MACHINE LIKE MECHAGODZILLA EVER EXPERIENCE FEAR?"

      6. Keith David, because he can do anything.
      7. Yes he definitely could wield Kongs Axes and he could do cool spinny moves with it.

    1. "Hi, thank you for taking some time with us. My friends and I have a few questions:
1/ Who is the Mechagodzilla's consciousness (after he went mad)? Is that King Ghidorah? Or a completely new consciousness with new memory? Is there any part of Ren Serizawa in it?
2/ Is there any alternate ending? I'm curious about the endings you have planned. Why did you choose that ending? I mean why did you give the surface for Godzilla and Hollow Earth for Kong and not vice versa?
3/ Are there any other Titans from the previous movie scheduled to appear? What is their role? I saw the concept art for Mothra, are you planning to let her appear? What is her role?
My friends and I enjoyed the movie so much. Thank you for doing your best"

      2. The film is about Kong searching for his home so it only made sense to end the movie there.
      3. No other pre existing Titans were ever seriously considered but we created quite a few that were going to show up in Hollow Earth that we didn't get a chance to show. My favorite was one we called Swamp Kitty. Maybe he'll make it if there is a sequel"

    1. Kiryushhhhh (22 May 2021). "Hello Jared Krichevdky I really like gvk but I also have so questions mostly about mg since you designed him and I hope that you could answer them
      1. if apex got a physical hollow earth power source with them and if they study the power source could mechagodzilla be more powerful
      2. How do you think apex get the second ghidorah head
      3. Could the a full power axe attack kill godzilla since in the novel it said that kong went for the kill
      4. Could mechagodzilla take a atomic breath from godzilla and is he immune to emp
      4. Do you know the stats for the main 3 monsters godzilla, kong, and mechagodzilla like weight, height and length
5.what type of metal is mechagodzilla made from is it a real metal or is it fictional metal
      6. How do you think that a fresh godzilla would have done up against mg because after reading the novel it stated that mg was superior to godzilla and that mg is faster and stronger than a fresh/real godzilla or that they would have be equal in power
      7. How strong do you think this new base godzilla is do you think that it is stronger than its super charged version since he keep his size and weight or at the same level as ghidorah
      9. And for my last question was there any other weapons that mg has that wasn't shown in the film or where cut
Thank you for taking your time to read my questions and I hope you have a good day"

      4. only for a short time and I think he's vulnerable to emp
      5. I don't know the official stats
      6. A little bit of both
      7. Godzilla could be MechaG but just barely!
      7. I think he's super strong now, stronger than Ghidorah

      1. How much does Mechagodzilla weigh?
      2. Is Mechagodzilla able to swim and fly?
      3. Does he have more missile launchers on his stomach?
      4. Is Mechagodzilla's body able to resist Godzilla's atomic breath?
      5. A lot of people say that since he has the infinite energy from hollow earth as his energy source, then Mechagodzilla has an infinite energy source and therefor he could increase the power of his beam by a lot. Is this true? If yes, would his body be able to handle it?
      6.Can he beat Goku?"

      3. Yes.
      4. For short bursts yes, but not prolonged attacks.
