Raymond Frederick "Ray" Harryhausen was an American stop motion animator and producer. Inspired to become a stop motion animator after seeing King Kong at Sid Grauman's Theatre when he was 13,[2] Harryhausen made his feature film debut as the "first technician" of Mighty Joe Young in 1949. From there, he built a reputation as one of the country's best special effects artists, bringing to life prehistoric, mythological, and science-fiction monsters. He passed away on May 7, 2013, in London, England, at the age of 92.[1] The 2013 film Pacific Rim was dedicated to him and director Ishiro Honda.[3]
