Tokusatsu DNA (特撮のDNA,   Tokusatsu no Dīenei, lit. DNA of Tokusatsu) is an ongoing series of exhibits focusing on tokusatsu special effects, held at varying museums and galleries in Japan. Since its inception in 2016, two showcases have featured Toho's Godzilla franchise, in addition to an exhibit showcasing Daiei's Heisei Gamera trilogy and multiple Ultraman exhibits.[1]

Selected exhibitions

From Eiji Tsuburaya to Koichi Kawakita: The path of Japan's proud special effects directors

Held from Wednesday, August 3, to Sunday, October 2, 2016 at the Fukushima Gainax Museum of Fantasy and Art in Miharu, Fukushima.[2]

Japan's proud history of monster character modeling

Held Friday, September 29 to Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the Saga Prefectural Art Museum in Saga. Godzilla and Gamera series modeler Shinichi Wakasa gave two lectures on opening day. On Friday October 13 and Friday October 27, "Godzilla Mini Concerts" were held, featuring musicians and singers performing pieces such as "Godzilla's Theme" and "Who Will Know."[3]

Heisei Era Special Effects "Takumi no Yume"

Took place Saturday, July 14 to Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Akashi Municipal Cultural Museum in Akashi, Hyōgo. Shinichi Wakasa also gave two lectures at this exhibit on Sunday, July 15. On Sunday, August 12, Godzilla series director Kazuki Omori gave a presentation about his two films in the series. In addition, the exhibit director gave two lectures on Saturday, July 28 and August 18, with the curator speaking on Saturday, July 21 and again on the 25th. [4]

Held at the Nihon Kogakuin College Gallery in Tokyo from Wednesday, December 19, 2018 to Sunday, January 27, 2019.

The Impact of Heisei Gamera and Daiei's Fantasy Special Effects

Again shown at the Nihon Kogakuin College Gallery in Tokyo, from Friday, December 13, 2019 to Sunday, January 26, 2020.

Godzilla appears on Mt. Fuji

Occurred from Saturday, July 10 to Monday, September 6, 2021 at the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum in Fuefuki, Yamanashi. Shinichi Wakasa lectured on Saturday, July 10, and special effects director Eiichi Asada spoke on August 21. Millennium series director Masaaki Tezuka gave a lecture on the same date. On Sunday, July 25, Sunday, August 8, and Sunday, August 29, the exhibit's curator spoke about the exhibit's highlights. [5]
