Does my new Mothra vs. Godzilla logo need more color?

Just uploaded a new logo for MvG which I extracted from that Japanese teaser, it was a pain to do and on top of that I had to re-edit it to be “Mothra vs. Godzilla” instead of “Godzilla Against Mothra”.

Anyway, if you guys don’t mind the logo then I’m just wondering whether or not I should upload a colored version on here since it’s currently white. I figured the white logo may look a bit bland on here so if you’d like I could recolour it to match any of the colors seen on Japanese promotional material that has the English logo (e.g. pale blue, dark blue, yellow, green, orange or red)

Nicely done! I think you should go with pale blue, since that's what the main poster uses. Also, was the "vs." based on anything?

Ani Mate, the One-Headed Human (talkcontribs)

The “vs.” was actually made from elements of the “Against” logo (which I also have as a separate file). The V is actually an upside-down version of one of the A letters, then I removed the horizontal line to complete the effect. The S is taken directly from the “Against” logo while the period is just the bottom of the T which had just been cut down.

If you ask me, we shouldn't be creating logos that never existed, but if we have to, the previous one was more visually interesting.

Good shout! I found this Heisei-style logo on a different X-Plus toy as well, though the other's probably more distinct.

Good catch SpaceHunterM. Also, ouch Les...

Anyway, thanks ABB for complimenting me, really helps my self esteem to see people actually like the things I do. I’ll try and find some more stuff for this site when I have the time and I’m finally becoming a bit more comfortable with editing, I’m gonna use my page to “test the waters”. Hope all of you are well and I wish for the best. Until next time, this is me signing off! “The ? End”

I apologize that I came off as dismissive. I just dislike fabricating logos, and @The Boy Who Cried Godzilla's philosophy has been to use whatever looks most unique. I prefer the American-style logo to the monochrome one, but I would be fine with using the one SHM posted if it can be extracted. Just please consult somebody first before you replace a logo that's already in use, I'd like us to be able to decide.

No need to be sorry Les, I understand your viewpoint and I am grateful that you’re considerate. I did talk with TBWCG about editing the navboxes a while back when I was thinking about updating certain logos (GvSG, GvD, TROG and GvB) and while he did mention liking logos that were the most distinct, he also seemed to agree with me that Toho’s own logos come first, perhaps I had just misunderstood his meaning. That was one of the main reasons I also wanted to change the MvG logo too, sure I would have to manipulate it to match the name for the film but since that had already been done with “The Thing” variant of the logo I just assumed that no-one would mind.

As for the consulting part, I guess I had just assumed that you would have merely reverted the navbox had you disliked the logo. I did consider asking for permission to change these things but again I just assumed you wouldn’t have minded, social interactions have also never been a specialty of mine and I didn’t want to come off as a pest or annoyance about asking for permission for pretty much every edit I make.

Just been looking at some of those X plus toys SpaceHunterM showed before. Noticed that their GMKGoji toy uses the international poster logo which is pretty neat. Also noticed them using the English logo from most of KKvG’s Japanese posters, which I had previously extracted when trying to look for a higher quality image of that logo. Interesting stuff.

I'll keep it real with you, I am no longer able to see your version of the MvG logo due in part at least to some wonky image handling on the site's end. I thought we had discussed just uploading a new file instead of overwriting older ones, but that's not really the point. Perhaps I have made the "rules/pecking order" seem more concrete than it is. To my mind at least, the navbox logo should have the most official logo available, but at the same time, the visual flare is also an important factor. For this reason alone I am hesitant to update the MGII logo to the one you found earlier. As for a lot of the rest, workable images to isolate are very hard to come by. Beyond that, it doesn't seem like a lot of the earlier films have an "official" logo, which makes it more art than science. Beyond that, there are aspects of some, like the water effect in the Destoroyah logo that make it almost impossible to isolate accurately, and at a workable quality for the navboxes.

That said, I really do appreciate your zeal, and I don't think that other versions of logos don't have a place on the site, as documenting them could be an interesting project, but navboxes a lot of the time have special needs that need to be accounted for. That's not terribly important to our conversation here, but in the long and short, I really like the vibe of the older "drive-in" style poster logos. Which isn't to suggest that my word is law, but, since you are asking/have asked me, that's my two cents.

Wow, really nice to hear from you again man, hope your work hasn’t been turning you into this guy. I’m guessing the MGII logo you’re talking about is the one used in the retail VHS, I never wanted you to do that one since I think it’s one of the most bland and lazy logos used for these films (even more lazy than Toho superimposing English logos over Japanese ones). Yes, I remember you mentioning how difficult it would be for some of those retail logos, like the mentioned GvD one. If you really can’t do it or find it too difficult then that’s fine, never want to put people in a position where they feel I’m forcing them to do something. As for that uploading files bit, yeah sorry I probably should have uploaded it as a separate file first, my bad.

Hey, if you ever want to do anything with alternate logos on this site then just mention it to me. I’ve been working on a lot of them recently and I have a bunch of files on my IPad and PC, it’s become a little hobby of mine to test out logos, typically for working on alternate title cards for the movies (but that’s another story).
