Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

First of all, this film has officially been cleared for inclusion: Les contacted Nicholas Driscoll, who recently wrote a review of it for Toho Kingdom, and he confirmed that Shizuri has a big enough role for our purposes.

Right after he responded, I discovered that the film's (delightful) international title is Yokaipedia. It's used in a movie review by The Japan Times, a tweet by the guy who wrote and performed the theme song, and an All Nippon Airways in-flight movie guide. The guide also reveals that the film has been subtitled in English. The problem is that the first source capitalizes the title and the other two don't. I'm inclined to give the latter more weight, though it'll be annoying.

Not sure why you need to tell me its been approved i dont have much too say either way.

Im also not sure why we keep insisting large monsters are needed when the scope doesnt requirenit and several films on the site dont have giant creatures.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

This is for everyone; the film is just one of your sandboxes.

The other thing we've been over. It was never realistic for us to cover every single Toho genre film, so we devised rules to ensure the films we covered had some sort of compelling Godzilla series connection. Yokaipedia didn't have that without a big role for a giant monster.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

I say having a shared difector with Godzilla helps but dont We have several toho and kadokawa films with no giant monsters in them though that got a pass due to staff who worked on them though

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

i was curious about Yamazakis other Sci-fi films actually.

I think a case could be made for the live action Parasyte adaptions.

Not my personal taste but its got monsters in the form of alien infected humans and toho is listed as a production company.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

If Yamazaki directs another Godzilla movie, the Parasyte duology and a few others get in, but they definitely don't qualify under the current scope rules. Rule #3 for live-action Toho films requires the director/special effects director/screenwriter to have two Godzilla credits for a reason - suddenly having to cover a bunch of new films because of one Godzilla film feels excessive for such a long-running series. The Daiei rules were constructed differently because the company didn't make many giant monster or sci-fi movies outside of the Gamera series (and since they no longer exist under that name, we don't have to worry about new films suddenly qualifying).

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

Other than Juvenile what others could these be?

Les (talkcontribs)

You mean what movies would qualify if we lowered the staff connection requirement to one movie, or if Takashi Yamazaki directed a second Godzilla movie?

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

The latter

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

According to Japanese Wikipedia, Toho only distributed Juvenile. At a glance, Returner would be the only film besides the Parasyte duology to qualify (thought there would be more, but he's done a lot of animated stuff recently and Toho was also distributor-only on Space Battleship Yamato).

Les (talkcontribs)

From what I can tell, the ones that would qualify are:

  • Returner (2002)
  • Space Battleship Yamato (2010)
  • Parasyte: Part 1 (2014) and Part 2 (2015)

Juvenile (2000) wouldn't count because it's not produced by Toho. I'm unsure about Ballad (2009), but it seems to involve time travel.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

Tetra suposedly is in Ghostbook i think. Also i thought space yamato was distributor-only

Les (talkcontribs)

Toho are part of Space Battleship Yamato's production committee.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

I know nothing about the source material but i heard the aliens in it are insectoid rather than being humanoid like the original

I do know it cameos in gamera super monster but that has no bearing.

Les (talkcontribs)

In any case, they won't be qualifying for another few years, if at all

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

So the ride doesnt count?

also Isnt there some films on the site made by someone only did one godzilla film?

Im not sure but i thought there was.

Les (talkcontribs)

The rule specifies “feature-length” Godzilla films, so the Ride doesn’t count. There are no Toho movies on the site that qualify by sharing staff with only one Godzilla movie; it will have qualified through a different rule. If you have questions about a specific movie, I’d be happy to elaborate.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

alright i took that was being directly messaged sorry. But still

I thought a monsters size doesnt really determine what gets covered here really given several films on the site.

Zillaman98 (talkcontribs)

Wait hold up a subbed version of the movies out there?

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

I was surprised too! Too bad the (apparently) only way to watch it is so expensive xD
