The Angry Video Game Nerd (formerly, Angry Nintendo Nerd), is a series of retro-gaming video reviews created by and starring James Rolfe as the titular character.

The series began as a small joke project featuring pre-recorded commentary over gameplay footage of Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest. Rolfe's commentary was notoriously in-depth and vitriol towards the nearly 20-year old game. A second video, based on the game Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde featured the first on-screen appearance of Rolfe in costume as the Nerd character. The two videos were shared among his close friends who prompted Rolfe to not only make more but to showcase the series on his website. The series began as a feature on YouTube, and later joined ScrewAttack Entertainment, which would later have three of its features, including Nerd, transferred to GameTrailers exclusively. Originally, the show was entitled The Angry Nintendo Nerd but was changed to its current title both to avoid any potential conflicts with Nintendo and due to the character branching out to other consoles.

The Nerd is a video game fanatic known for his short temper, foul-mouth and copious consumption of beer. His reviews consist of profanity-laden rants about a game's shortcomings, whether it be faulty controls, bad graphics, or seemingly impossible challenges. Often times, the videos will end with the Nerd destroying the game and/or the console itself. Guest stars are commonplace on the show spanning from fictional characters (often portrayed by actors in store-bought Halloween costumes) to real-life people.

During the show's tenure, the Nerd has reviewed an abundance of Godzilla games, and toys and posters of the series can often be spotted in the background of episodes. Episode 77 of the series focused entirely on select retro Godzilla games such as Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!, Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters, Super Godzilla, Godzilla: Kaiju Daikessen, and Godzilla for Game Boy.
