Dr. Tanabe was part of the research expedition to Odo Island. He examined a well on the island with a Geiger counter, which detected radioactivity. He warned the villagers not to use the wells on that side of the island. He next used the counter on a huge depression in the ground, in which Dr. Kyohei Yamane found a living trilobite. Tanabe warned Yamane not to touch the trilobite with his bare hands. Later, Tanabe was one of the many assembled onboard the Shikine as it searched for Godzilla in Tokyo Bay.
