Godzilla Dominion Setting

On the same page(s) that talk about Godzilla heading for Skull Island, Mark Russel acknowledges the events taking place in 2021. Also, in the earlier part of the book that retells Godzilla rescuing Na Kika, there should be a date on the top of the page.

We don't treat novelizations as canon unless provided with specific evidence (like Dougherty pointing towards the King of the Monsters novelization when asked what Kong was up to during the movie). You're also assuming that the novelization sets the main events of the story in 2024, but there are several lines placing it just three years after King of the Monsters (like on pages 54 and 85) and it avoids giving out exact years; it just describes events in relation to each other. So the Na Kika chapter starts with "three years and two months ago," etc. Now, Keyes did write both this novelization and Dominion, so if anything, it's evidence he intended for the comic to take place in 2019 (Mark describes its events as taking place "three years ago, right after the fight with Ghidorah" on page 59). But I'm not sure I'm comfortable running even with that.

All the movie tells us, for the record, is that Godzilla's attack in Pensacola is "the first substantiated Titan sighting in over three years," but that could be interpreted as referring to Camazotz and not any of the Titans who appeared in Dominion.

What about Scylla? Attack in Savannah, Georgia? Ring a bell? Seems plausible.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

I'm aware of the incident, but you're going to have to explain its relevance here (and drop the attitude, please).

I suppose the best way to understand it is this: So we all know that after Godzilla's triumph in Boston, he and the other Titans got to work healing the planet and undoing environmental damage. So that would mean that we have at least 15 Titans around the world do their thing. By the events of Godzilla Dominion, most of the Titans have gotten settled at one location or another. So that, in a way, narrows down the potential "substantiated Titan sighting" to Scylla and Scylla only. So as I typed this, I remembered something. In both the Movie and the Novelization, Simmons' monologue before his death involved him explaining the reason behind his ambitions. He said, "You see, 10 years ago, when Gojira was first revealed to the world, I had a dream." We both know that if we are to comprehend this word for word, Simmons was referring to the events of 2014.

It all adds up once that line and some of the dialogue in the novelization are taken into account.

"So that, in a way, narrows down the potential 'substantiated Titan sighting' to Scylla and Scylla only"

It does not. We know that Kingdom Kong, and thus Camazotz's attack on Skull Island, takes place in 2021, as the year is given in the comic. Neither the comic nor Godzilla vs. Kong provide the month they take place, so that could conceivably fit the "over three years" description.

The Simmons line seems to be something Keyes just forgot to change from the screenplay, given how frequently his book otherwise treats the events of King of the Monsters as happening three years ago. (We also know that King of the Monsters is set in 2019.) Our page on the novelization notes the inconsistency.

Alternatively, he may've started writing the novelization from an earlier version of the screenplay, and forgot to clean things up when revisions were made. There are some other bits that make it feel like a Frankenstein too, like the inconsistency in Apex's name. From what I found searching the digital version, it's referred to as "Apex Industries" seven times, "Apex cybernetics" (half-decapitalized) four times, and "Apex Cybernetics" (capitalized) only one time.

I believe we can all agree that the people doing all the writing need to get their act together and deal with all of the inconsistencies and conflicting lore in the Monsterverse.

Astounding Beyond Belief (talkcontribs)

Yeah, it's irritating that we have to rely on social media posts for clarification instead of, say, a Monsterverse edition of the Godzilla Dictionary, especially almost a decade into this franchise. But we always have the ability to just say on our pages that there's conflicting information. I find the series' unwillingness to have a consistent human cast more frustrating than the continuity issues myself.
