Ghost Godzilla (ゴーストゴジラ,   Gōsuto Gojira) is an unused kaiju who was considered for inclusion in various proposals for the seventh and final Heisei Godzilla film. It is the restless spirit of the original Godzilla who was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer in 1954.

Overview

Ghost Godzilla was intended to be Godzilla's opponent in the final film of the Heisei series. Planning on tying in the last planned Godzilla film for at least a decade with the original 1954 film, Toho decided for Godzilla's opponent to be the restless spirit of the first Godzilla. According to concept art of Ghost Godzilla commissioned by Shinji Nishikawa on December 27, 1994,[2] Ghost Godzilla would have possessed LittleGodzilla in one draft of the film, causing him to grow from the inside out into a form resembling the 1954 Godzilla. As a result of the sudden growth, Ghost Godzilla would have large cracks and tears in its skin. Ghost Godzilla also appeared to have white eyes with no pupils. In another draft, the spirit possessed Anguirus, transforming into the hybrid kaiju Godzirus. In another draft, titled Godzilla vs. Baraguirus, Ghost Godzilla instead possessed the new kaiju Baraguirus, described as resembling a hybrid between Baragon and Anguirus.[3] In the draft for Godzilla vs. Chaos, Godzilla, LittleGodzilla, and the extradimensional kaiju Chaos battled over Ghost Godzilla's bio-energy.

Ghost Godzilla was scrapped because director Takao Okawara reportedly felt that after Godzilla's previous two opponents, Mechagodzilla and SpaceGodzilla, had been duplicates of him, having a third film pitting Godzilla against another duplicate of himself "would not [have been] a good idea."[4] Ghost Godzilla was eventually replaced with Barubaroi, who was then subsequently reworked into Destoroyah.

Ghost Godzilla would be considered as a character one last time for Bio-Godzilla where it would have teamed up with an adult Godzilla Junior to take on a bigger threat. Unlike the previous versions, it would not require a vessel to fight monsters and destroy cities. However, when Tomoyuki Tanaka passed away in 1997, Bio-Godzilla would be scrapped and Ghost Godzilla right along with it.[1]

Personality

Ghost Godzilla is a evil force possessing intense hate and anger at his time of death towards humans and their cities. He seeks to possess the second Godzilla to become an invincible god of destruction.[1][5][6]

Abilities

Atomic breath

One draft has Ghost Godzilla being able to use his atomic breath, just as he could when he was alive.[1]

Possession

Ghost Godzilla can possess other kaiju (such as LittleGodzilla, Anguirus, and Baraguirus) and even humans. In drafts where he possesses LittleGodzilla and Anguirus, he can mutate his vessel into having traits of his original appearance when he was alive.

Shapeshifting

In drafts where he possesses LittleGodzilla, Ghost Godzilla was able to transform into LittleGodzilla in order to weaken Godzilla's attacks. He was also able to assume the forms of Aurora Godzilla and CrystalGodzilla.

Supernatural abilities

Ghost Godzilla can corrupt the minds of his vessels with his evil influence, use both levitation and teleportation, spit out ectoplasm that can create duplicates of himself, become invisible to the human eye, pass through solid objects and manipulate the environment around him with his life energy, shown in one draft where he causes damage to Tokyo.[7] In his Aurora Godzilla form, ships and boats that come into contact with him disappear.[8]

In Bio-Godzilla, Ghost Godzilla is able to fight without being able to possess another kaiju and is able to destroy cities.

Weaknesses

In one draft of the film, he hates being in the daylight and only appears at night, and his movement is restricted to where he went when he was alive without a vessel.

In another draft, he can be forced out of his vessel when defeated hard enough, shown where Godzilla was able to defeat him and force him out of LittleGodzilla. His possession can be resisted if the vessel’s will is strong enough, shown where LittleGodzilla was briefly able to temporarily take back control of his body before Ghost takes over once more.

In yet another draft, when he enters his final form as CrystalGodzilla and when he is defeated, his remaining life energy will be used up and the original Godzilla will be defeated for good, shown when LittleGodzilla, now grown up into Godzilla Junior thanks to Miki Saegusa's assistance, he was able to destroy his CrystalGodzilla form and defeat him once and for all.[7][8]
