Cinemassacre
Cinemassacre is an entertainment website run by lifelong Godzilla fan James Rolfe, featuring primarily reviews, gameplay, and commentary of various media such as video games and movies. The website's most popular series, The Angry Video Game Nerd, features Rolfe as the titular character in satirical reviews of vintage games that he finds less-than-enjoyable. Godzilla film posters, toys and other items can often be spotted in the background in many of Rolfe's videos, and he talks about the King of the Monsters often.
Angry Video Game Nerd and game reviews
James Rolfe talked about and played several Godzilla video games on Cinemassacre within his Angry Video Game Nerd series and beyond.
Episode 77 of the AVGN focused entirely on the select retro Godzilla games Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!, Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters, Super Godzilla, Godzilla: Kaiju Daikessen, and Godzilla for Game Boy.
Both Godzilla: Unleashed and Bandai Namco's Godzilla were played during two separate episodes of James and Mike Mondays where Rolfe and co-host Mike Matei sit down and play various video games.
Movie and TV reviews
Cinemassacre was famous for its annual Monster Madness event where Rolfe reviews various horror, sci-fi, and monster movies during the month of October. During the second Monster Madness, Rolfe reviewed the entirety of the Godzilla series up to Godzilla: Final Wars. Subsequent Monster Madness events featured other Japanese monster movies such as Toho's The War of the Gargantuas and Rodan. In 2013, Rolfe reviewed every Gamera movie in the Showa series as a part of Cinemassare's Monster Madness: Sequel-A-Thon 2 and briefly talked about the Heisei Gamera films in one review.
Miscellaneous content
Rolfe has included Godzilla-related content in other videos on the site. The Godzilla book written by Ian Thorne was mentioned in a video discussing the Crestwood House Monster book series.
Opinions
Rolfe's top ten Godzilla films, as listed at the end of his Godzilla-thon series, are as follows:
- Godzilla (1954)
- Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
- Godzilla: Final Wars
- Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
- Mothra vs. Godzilla
- King Kong vs. Godzilla
- Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
- Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
- Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
- Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
In 2014, Rolfe relayed his immediate thoughts on Legendary Pictures' 2014 American Godzilla film, and although he enjoyed the movie, claiming that he actually saw a Godzilla movie, he complained that there wasn't enough Godzilla in it and that the design of the MUTOs "weren't original" and "felt a little too cliché." However, he also expressed his wish that this movie was released earlier rather than the 1998 film. In his re-review of the 2014 film in 2016, he pointed out some more flaws he found with it. Also in 2016, Rolfe gave his thoughts on the trailer for Toho's then-upcoming new Godzilla film Shin Godzilla, expressing his excitement for the first Japanese Godzilla film since 2004. Rolfe later reviewed the film alongside Mike Matei after attending an early screening, stating that he found it to be a flawed, but overall very satisfying and refreshing entry in the series.
